Drake Says “Hold On, We’re Going Home” Is Not Hip Hop, Accepts VMA For “Best Hip Hop Video”

Although Drake was not able to attend the MTV VMAs, where the rapper-singer won the “Best Hip Hop Video” award for “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” the emcee delivered his acceptance speech while on tour with Lil Wayne.

In his speech, Drake thanks God, his mother and Lil Wayne. He also responds to critics who said “Hold On, We’re Going Home” was not a Hip Hop record.

“I know this is a Hip Hop award,” Drake says in the concert clip, “and I know a lot of you are frustrated like, ‘this is not a Hip Hop song.’ And you know what? You’re right. I tricked you all. Rappers, better luck next year.”

The category also included the following videos: Eminem’s “Bezerk,” Childish Gambino’s “3005” Kanye West’s “Black Skinhead” and Wiz Khalifa’s “We Dem Boyz.”

      1. Just goes to show you that Drake is the ultimate troll and delivered one of the baddest one liners you’ll ever hear: “Rappers, better luck next time.”

      2. You’re only going to see guys like Drake and Wayne do serious numbers because they value hard work and know how to move a crowd. That’s emceeing.

      3. Drake basically told other rappers to go hard or go home, and judging by the way they’re slacking off in the rhyming department, he might be right. Sales are decreasing year after year, and pretty soon, if they don’t step their game up, Uncle Sam gonna repossess all their awards, their houses, everything they used to work for.

      4. No, those guys do numbers because dumb kids with poor music taste buy their shit. There’s many rappers who’ve worked harder and rock a crowd better than those two.

    1. So Drake won a HIP HOP award for a song even HE ADMITS IS NOT HIP HOP.

Just more proof Drake runs rap, fools be throwing awards at him for no reason.

    2. drake is a genius. he knows what the fuck he is doing. he raps in order for people to call him hip hop, but makes R&B type songs like “hold on, we’re going home” and people still nominate him for hip hop because they really can’t place him anywhere else. same with others like nelly, ja rule or kid cudi. all you old hatin ass niggas should just accept that hip hop has changed for the better and drake is leading the way.

      1. you again? love how you always say i’m wrong but never have anything else to say, which means i’m right.

      2. Don’t have to anything else because you’re never right about anything. Drake ain’t shit and there’s a bunch of rappers who are superior to him.

      3. no one is superior to drake. not jay electronica, not j.cole, not childish gambino, not kendrick lamar, not big krit, no one.

      4. sorry, but no one sells albums quicker than Drake. NWTS was the fastest selling album, selling 1.3 million copies in 2013. I’d like to see your favorite rappers sell that amount of records in that fast amount of time.

      5. Since you wanna talk sales, let’s talk sales. There’s many rappers who’ve sold more and quicker than Drake. NWTS is NOT the fastest selling album of 2013, that title goes to Eminem for MMLP2, which sold more than 2 million to date. Aubrey still has some catching up to do. Even so, sales doesn’t make an artist better.

      6. Nothing Was the Same debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 658,000. The album had the second highest first week sales of any album in 2013, at the time of its release. It would also be the highest first week sales for a hip hop album since, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV (2011).[76] In its second week the album sold 148,000 more copies.[77] In its third week the album sold 83,000 more copies.[78] In its fourth week the album continued to remain in the top five on the Billboard 200, selling 58,000 more copies.[79] The album sold 1,344,000 copies in 2013 in the United States, making it the seventh best-selling album of the year.[80] As of April 13, 2014, the album sold 1,535,000 copies in the United States.[81]

In the United States, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling more than 79,200 copies in its first week, becoming one of the lowest selling albums of 2013. The Marshall Mathers LP 2 logs the sixth-biggest sales week of 2013. The album also marks Eminem’s 1st No. 9 album.[104] In its second week the album dropped to number two, selling 210,000 more copies.[105] In its third week the album returned to number one on the Billboard 200, selling 120,000 more copies.[106] In its fourth week the album dropped to number two on the Billboard 200, selling 199,000 more copies.[107] The album sold 172,000 copies in the United States in 2013.[108] As of August 03, 2014, the album has sold 2,169,610 copies in United States according to Nielsen Soundscan.[109]

In the United Kingdom, the album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, selling over 143,000 copies, becoming Eminems seventh consecutive No. 1 album in the UK. By achieving such a feat, Eminem became the first American act to score seven consecutive UK Number 1 albums and is now on par with The Beatles in second place for the most chart-topping U.K. albums in a row.[110] As of February, 2014, the album has sold over 477,000 copies in the U.K.[111]

The album was the best-selling album of 2013 in Canada, with over 242,000 units sold.[112] In Australia, the album debuted at atop the ARIA Albums Chart, with only three days of chart sales, becoming his seventh No. 1 album in the country.[113][114] It remained at number-one on the ARIA Albums Chart in its second week.[115] The Marshall Mathers LP 2 finished 2013 with more than 3.8 million copies sold worldwide.[116][117]

        ^^^really?

      7. I wasn’t stating that Em sold MORE than Drake, I stated that Eminem sold much SLOWER than Drake. asshole. Can’t you read?

      8. Funny because you edited the information about MMLP2. Here’s the real info.

In the United States, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling more than 792,000 copies in its first week, becoming the second-biggest debut of 2013 and the second-largest sales week of the year, only behind the debut of Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience, which bowed at number one with 968,000 in March. The Marshall Mathers LP 2 logs the sixth-biggest sales week of the past five years. The album also marks Eminem’s seventh No. 1 album.[104] In its second week the album dropped to number two, selling 210,000 more copies.[105] In its third week the album returned to number one on the Billboard 200, selling 120,000 more copies.[106] In its fourth week the album dropped to number two on the Billboard 200, selling 199,000 more copies.[107] The album sold 1,727,000 copies in the United States in 2013, making it the second best-selling album of the year.[108] As of August 03, 2014, the album has sold 2,169,610 copies in United States according to Nielsen Soundscan.[109]

      9. “In the United States, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling more than 79,200 copies in its first week, becoming one of the lowest selling albums of 2013. How can his album debut at #1, while also being his first #9 album, then drop to #2? Definitely edited.

      10. A lot of albums in this time frame have sold in the ten thousands. Look @ Childish Gambino, French Montana, 50 Cent, and Tyler the Creator. They’ve sold tens of thousands in the first week. You anonymous pussies edited that information, not me.

    3. It’s not Drake’s fault that he is the second coming of Nas and Marvin Gaye rolled into one.

      1. Drake is an average rapper and he sings horribly. I can name better rapper/singers:

Better rappers: Jay Z, Nas, Eminem, Rakim, Big L, Andre 3000, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, etc.

Better singers: Andre 3000, Cee-Lo, Bone Thugs, Mos Def, Missy Elliott, Kanye West, etc.

      2. Cee-Lo “Free”, Mos Def “Umi Says”, BTNH “Tha Crossroads” >>>>>>>>>>> Drake’s “singing”

    4. the king racking up his accolades while haters conthinue to stay mad at the sucess. Its only a matter of time before drake is regarded as a legend and the greatest of the new generation. Just remember haters you are a minority

    5. At least even drake admitted that wasn’t a hip hop record, when will these fucking retards including DX realize that r & b is fucking different than hip hop

    6. Drake is dope when he wants to actually flow. But lately, this motherfucka being such a damn pussy. NWTS was such a soft album, you can’t even call it hip hop. Drake better grow some balls and bring some heat on the next album, otherwise he might as well not even call himself a rapper, that bitch a singer.

      1. Where’s the jealousy and hate? OP spoke the truth. MTV is a joke who rather show crappy reality shows than music videos.

      2. Yeah, MTV, the same network that gave Miley Cyrus video of the year for licking a sledgehammer and straddling a wrecking ball naked recognizes and respect talent.

      3. Miley Cyrus is a gifted and talented artist. She has the guts to think outside the box, something other pop “artists” are incapable of doing.

      4. dude, you’re arguing with a troll

use some intelligent conversation to make the loser troll stop commenting or start another conversation

      5. If Miley Cyrus can ride a wrecking ball without falling or tipping over, then that should tell you it’s a metaphor referring to how well she can ride the dick. She’s an artist of omnipotent and unlimited talent. Miley is on her way to becoming the next Madonna.

      6. If thinking outside the box means shaking your ass and running around either half-naked or full naked, then almost every female artist is thinking outside the box.

      7. There is no metaphor in her riding the wrecking ball. Miley’s an artist with zero talent or originality and she will never be the next Madonna.

      8. Fuck you, son. Hannah Montana was Miley Cyrus’ magnum opus, her best work in her catalog. Growing up in the hood, we used to wake up 8 in the morning, grab our bowls of cereals, turn on the tube to Disney and sing the theme song, “Best of Both Worlds”. Before we went to school, Mom made sure we never forgot our sequined Hannah Montana lunchboxes. At night, before we went to sleep have niggas huddled up 6 in the bed(3 at the foot, 3 at the head) and we would ask our mothers to read us a bedtime story, and they would hand us our Hannah Montana dolls to cuddle with. You know, with the pink guitar. Miley has more creative talent and imagination than you do in your anonymous pinkie.

      9. MTV may be a joke now, but their name still means more than you think. Drake won. Not a big deal, but still enough of a deal for millions to watch.

    7. As a kid we couldn’t wait for the VMA’s see all are favorite rappers perform… Back in the golden age of hiphop!! Now MTV has no cred as a music station.. By the way Bone Thugs N Harmony had the best hiphop performance ever!! So fuck MTV

    8. Damn, he a bitch nigga. But you know, that was a pretty good statement lol. Like a giant middle finger to his critics, can’t knock that shit lol!

    9. “Better singers: Andre 3000, Cee-Lo, Bone Thugs, Mos Def, Missy Elliott, Kanye West, etc.”

Andre sounds gay. Cee Lo sounds like he’s gurgling cat piss. Bone Thugs were gangsta rappers. Mos Def was more lyrical than Drake, but couldn’t construct songs to save his back child support non paying ass. Missy Elliot was annoying as fuck, and Kanye used Auto Tune to hide the fact he had no range.

      1. Not true, not true, they still sing in their records, Mos Def can make a song, Missy ain’t annoying, and Kanye has more range than Drake, who also used AutoTune.
