2014’s MTV Video Music Awards had its moments. Held in Inglewood, California, the annual award show took on a theme as women were well-represented throughout the show. Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea and Beyonce were just some of the women who graced the stage to perform and win awards.

The awards started off with a bang. Ariana Grande was joined on stage by Nicki Minaj during her performance of “Break Free” and was later caught twerking during the song. She also reappeared during the same set with a changed outfit to accompany Grande and Jessie J in “Bang Bang.” Minaj appeared to be holding on to her outfit to avoid a wardrobe malfunction.

Katy Perry, who came to the event with RiFF RAFF, won Best Female Video for “Dark Horse,” which features Three 6 Mafia member Juicy J and at around half past the hour, comedian Jay Pharoah imitated Jay Z in a bit about him, Beyoncé and their daughter Blue Ivy. He would later imitate Kanye West in a similar bit. Soon after, Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea won Best Pop Video with “Problem.”  Iggy did not join Grande on stage to accept the award.

Perhaps one of the more sobering moments of the night was when Common came out and had a message for Ferguson, Missouri and the recent unrest in the city over the shooting death of teenager Michael Brown.

A moment of silence came and after, Common announced Drake as the winner of best male rap video with “We’re Going Home.”

Usher and Nicki Minaj hit the stage for a joint performance of “She Came To Give It To You” at close to 10 pm.

Another bit of news came off the stage. Big Sean and Ariana Grande were seen backstage holding hands. There had been weeks of rumors that the two were dating. This came after Grande won the award for Best Pop Video.

At around 10:30, Rita Ora and Iggy Azalea performed “Black Widow.”

At around 11 pm, perhaps the biggest moments of the night started to form as Beyonce took the stage and performed numerous hits including “Partition” and “Drunk In Love.” After she was done performing, she was joined on stage by Jay Z and Blue Ivy and was presented with the Video Vanguard award.
