Drake Explains Frustration With Rolling Stone

Yesterday (February 13), Drake criticized Rolling Stone for taking him off the magazine’s cover. The publication responded by saying that it is customary to switch covers when a musician or actor dies and in this case, the publication elected to publish a cover featuring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who passed away February 2.

“They…took my cover from me last minute and ran the issue,” Drake said in a Twitter post today. “I’m disgusted with that. RIP to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. All respect due. But the press is evil.”

Drake later deleted the Twitter updates above and issued a statement on his OVO Blog about why he is frustrated with Rolling Stone and why he feels he must apologize for his comments regarding Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

“I completely support and agree with Rolling Stone replacing me on the cover with the legendary Phillip Seymour Hoffman,” Drake said. “He is one of the most incredible actors of our time and a man that deserves to be immortalized by this publication. My frustration stemmed from the way it was executed. The circumstances at hand are completely justifiable [on the magazines behalf], but I was not able to salvage my story or my photos and that was devastating. They ran the issue without giving me a choice to be in it or not. I would have waited until it was my time because I understand the magnitude of the cover they chose, but I just wasn’t given that option and that made me feel violated.

“I apologize to anybody who took my initial comments out of context because in no way would I ever want to offend the Hoffman family or see myself as bigger than that moment,” Drake continues. “I am still the same person. Today I was forced out of my character and felt the need to react swiftly. These days are the worst ones. Waking up after a great night in the studio and it’s your day to be picked apart. After dwelling on it for a few hours or days you will come to the conclusion that you brought it on yourself almost every time. So here I am having that moment. I once again apologize to everybody who took my cover comments the wrong way. I respect Rolling Stone for being willing to give a kid from Toronto a shot at the cover. I guess this is a day to learn and grow.”

      1. Kendrick doesn’t keep his thoughts to himself. 50 has never hesitated to let the world know how insecure he is. Drake is human, and clearly feels like he’s not getting his just due, and while there are other ways to go about expressing that frustration, if he wants to vent publicy then so be it.

      2. What does Kendrick and 50 have to do with Drake’s insecurities showing? Nothing. This whole situation makes Drake an even bigger diva. He’s complaining about an unimportant interview that got overshadowed by a dead actor.

    1. The difference between Drake and 90% of these rappers out here, he is actually articulate enough to get his point across in an intelligent manner.

      1. I know, do you ever wonder what color his butthole is? Do you think he bleaches it to match the rest of his skin? Damn, I just want to look at it once, big Drake fan!

    2. Drake might be a bigger bitch than that bieber kid. I still dont know how that fuckin jew sold one album. Wish someone would body this faggot

    3. Theres a lot of rapper out there that would kill to get interviewed for Rolling Stone, cover or not… and this sensitive ass actor talking like hes a victim.

    4. Who cares about Rolling Stone? They don’t mean shit to HipHop except expanding your fan base to miiddle aged white guys who dont buy Drake albums anyway or even listen to rap music unless its Eminem or some off brand shit.

      1. PT Anderson’s the Master was a fine piece of work and I was fortunate enought to catch it in a theatre projected in 70mm. Their other great collaboration was of course the splendid Magnolia. Check out Spike’s underrated gem 25th Hour as well. Dead or alive, Drake has not earned the right to be placed on the front cover of RS. Until this talentless asshole can produce quality art to match the high standards set by Hoffman etc. he should shut the fuck up.

    5. this nigga ended his statement with “Sincerely, the boy.” CMON SON YOU A GROWN ASS MAN CALLIN YOURSELF THE BOY.

    6. “customary to switch covers when a musician or actor dies”

They didn’t switch covers when Eazy died, they didn’t switch covers when Biggie died, they didn’t switch covers when Pun died, when Aaliyah died, when ODB died

      1. Heres a list of all the rappers/rap groups that made the cover of Rolling Stone

    7. RS: Hello
Drake: WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING TAKING MY COVER OFF?!!
RS: Well you see, Phillip Hoffman died…
Drake: YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT PHILLIP IS BETTER THAN ME?
RS: No sir, this actor died
Drake: GET YOUR SECURITY READY! IMA COME UP AND SHOW YOU NIGGAS WHAT IM ABOUT!!

      Phone hangs.

    8. Drake Haters remind me of republicans. Dumb, ignorant and stuck in the past. Drake is running hiphop. Obama is running America. GET OVER IT

    9. “Drake has not earned the right to be placed on the front cover of RS”

He’s only sold 5 million albums, and who knows how many digital singles. What have you done lately, sport?

    10. “No one said he has to care about him but he shouldn’t disrespect him”

Or what? Hoffman is going to come up out of the grave and kick his ass?

    11. “What does Kendrick and 50 have to do with Drake’s insecurities showing?”

Cause both are also insecure as fuck. Entertainers in general don’t like being snubbed, especially when it was originally intended for Drake to be on the cover. You’d expect Hoffman to be on the cover of EW or People, not RS. They fucked up.

      1. Those two ain’t insecure at all. Besides, it doesn’t matter who was supposed to be on the cover, it still happened and Drake is acting like a diva about it. If anyone fucked up, it’s him.

    12. You YMCMB haters are fucking idiots. Because I’m an accountant for Cash Money Records, I spend a lot of time with Birdman. What some of you may not know is Michael Jackson was planning on signing to YMCMB at the time of his death. He had even changed his stage name to Mic Jackin.

He was planning on releasing 2 Major albums of hard hitting Trap shit, one a collaborative album with Lil Wayne titled Trap Kids. Since Michael’s demise Cash Money records have actually teamed up with NASA and are creating a Global headquarters in Space and on the Moon.

The reason for this is to create a new genre of hiphop called “Zero Gravity Rap”. Lil Wayne was hospitalized because during his first zero gravity rap training session he rapped so hard he created a Blackhole that nearly engulfed him.

The universe was not ready for his talent so it tried to take him, luckily all it got was his chain and a couple of Big Mac vouchers. All you haters are gonna be sorry soon YMCMB will be so big it will have its own gravitational pull meaning you will be drawn into it no matter what you do.
