DJ Quik has long been considered a man of style, and he’s now admitted that all of his swagger came from none other than Prince in a recent interview.

In a clip of a No Jumper interview, which came out on Monday (April 24), the legendary West Coast artist told Sharp of The Sharp Tank about how The Purple One was his fashion inspiration in junior high school.

“That’s where I get all my swag from,” DJ Quik said. “I thought he was dope. I pressed my hair out in high school bro and I had length. I used to have a fro but it was unruly you know, because I’m mixed. If I take my braids down, I look like Tracee Ellis Ross for like five minutes. After that, I look like buckwheat.”

In reference to DJ Quik comparing himself to Tracee Ellis Ross, he recently went off on a few Twitter trolls during a social media tirade.

It all started on Friday (April 14) when Quik called out a troll who shared a photo of the actor dressed in a DJ Quik costume. “New album cover?” the user inquired.

“Perhaps, but I was thinking of having your momma gagging on my dick, while she’s in black face. Cool, right?” Quik replied.

Things then escalated when two other trolls took aim at Quik’s 1991 song “Quik Is the Name.”

“Sorry this is wack as fuck,” one troll said about the song.

“You wack as fuck. Suck a dick or sumn dumb n-gguh,” Quik retorted before taking aim at another troll criticizing the record.

“I’ll slap the shit outta you,” Quik said, before concluding: “Ima learn you ‘thumb’ gangstas today.”

“Quik Is The Name” appeared on Quik’s debut album of the same name, which peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard 200 and eventually went platinum in 1995.

Meanwhile in March, DJ Quik also shared an encounter he had with Michael Jackson which wasn’t under the most friendly of terms.

Speaking on the All The Smoke podcast, Quik recounted the time he first (sort of) met with the late King of Pop, explaining that the weird interaction happened at Jackson’s studio while Quik was in the process of recording his 1991 single, “Tonite.”

DJ Quik claimed that he and several others were asked by someone on Jackson’s team to perform an odd request.

“They came through, warned everybody that Michael was finna come through, and he didn’t want nobody to see him coming through or looking, right?” he said.

Quik said a rep from Jackson’s team entered the room to notify them of MJ’s arrival. While they didn’t ask him or his guests to leave, Quik did note they did have a very weird request: they wanted everyone in the room to turn and face the wall.

“We taking a break from the studio, and these guys come in, and they was like, ‘We about to bring somebody through here, can you turn and face the wall?’” Quik explained, before telling hosts Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes that he responded by asking: “Are you serious?”

Despite feeling uncomfortable with the request, Quik and his crew turned around. However, the Compton producer did admit that before Michael Jackson scurried into the room, he was able to catch a glimpse of the late pop star.

“It’s like damn, Mike didn’t want anyone to look at him, the fuck is this?” Quik said. Later on in the clip, he recalled another brief studio run-in with Jackson, where he said the singer seemed “more cool” and “less timid.”
