DJ Quik has been putting it down in and for the West coast for years. He’s dropped numerous classic cuts and managed to cook up Quikstrumental like heat for other emcees like Jay-Z, Tupac and others. After traveling the world and making hit records, he’s doing something new: performing with a live band.
With a new album coming June 6, DJ Quik found time to hit up HipHopDX with some exclusive information about the project and the experience behind the new album. He even offered some honesty about recent trouble.
When asked about the hardest part about being on-stage with a live band, Quik noted the “logistics of having 12 people all tuned together.”
Nevertheless, Quik didn’t disappoint fans who were eager to check out this new project. “(The fans reacted) with amazement and lots of fun,” he told us about the crowd’s reaction.
Still, it’s not all fun and games for the Compton emcee. I have recently been sabatoged, he confided.
What Quik is referring to is a recent dispute between him, his company and Baby Ree/P3 Entertainment which is comprised of Pablo Chapparo Jr. , Damian Young, Jorge Lozano, & Kuan Motley.
In a statement he released on his web page, Quik goes into further detail about the problem. ”There have been many different things that this company has done without my approval, selling my product on Ebay as well as other places, speaking trash about people who work for me, causing me to lose money on touring opportunities, and the latest changing my passwords on my Mad Science website as well as all the email addresses so I am unable to conduct my business properly,” he said.
Even through the tribulations, Quik seems optimistic about the future. Look for the new album DJ Quik-Greatest Hits Live At The House of Blues in stores June 6.
