Distant Relatives’ Management Addresses Leaks

Earlier this week, several songs from the much-anticipated May 18 Distant Relatives self-titled album hit the Internet. The collaborative album between Damian Marley and Nas was recorded through much of 2009 and early 2010, and boasts appearances from Lil Wayne, K’Naan and Dennis Brown, among others. Yesterday, Marley’s manager Dan Dalton spoke to HipHopDX about the leaks and why fans have all the more reason to support the album when it’s properly made available for sale on May 18th.

“We know that those [songs] got out, we’re not sure from who,” said Dalton, who once managed Jurassic 5, among others. “One song, ‘Friends’ we actually made available on purpose [via live stream] on Tagged.com, but obviously there is little you can do to control where the audio goes once it’s up online. “But we’re still hoping that people understand that this is an album, and this isn’t about any particular song. These two collaborated to make an album for people to sit down, press ‘play’ and listen to the whole way through. Hopefully, people will still support Distant Relatives. We think they will.”

Distant Relatives is to be released May 18th on Universal Republic Records.

    1. cats still gonna buy the album. ima bootleg the shit out of it, and then buy 2 official copies, one to keep one to give. every album leaks. but good music still sells. if its hot, i want it on my shelf, and i want something to read through on the toilet. nas and marley dropping an album. you a cot damned bitch if you dont cop it. just good ass music. nas spitting flame rods and damian got beats. i hope it does well commercially, i think it will. global appeal, 2 legendary bloodlines coming together. if you dont cop albums, dont cry about the state of the industry. plenty good music drops, and yall aint copping.

      1. I agree, I’m definitely gon get the leaks as soon as they come out, but I will buy the album so that on the rare occasion that a good album comes out it gets some support.

      2. Word is bond!…a lot of valid points…support the G.O.A.T and the son of the G.O.A.T. in their respective genres.

      3. Yes, people definitely need to get their hands on this one. I know I will. I’ve been waiting for this one for about a year now.

    2. I was upset that shit leaked, I heard it at rock the bells and knew it was gonna be heavy so I was waiting for the album, but forsure gettin the album stillllllllll

    3. i’ma buy 3 copies. if you haven’t heard the leaks u need to know every song has been AMAZING!

Distant Relatives gonna sweep the grammys for sure.

      1. Let’s hope it sweeps the Grammys. The Grammys are a bunch of B.S. right now just giving the awards to people that sell the most instead of artistic quality.

    4. im alll for the free leaks,,,,, prior to album drop….

but if you dont support this album on may 18 then a huggggggggge F YOU.

    5. Buy it yall. I have a few leaks too, but when shit started flooding the net i stopped cuz i wanted some kinda reward for coughin up the dough on May 18.

if anything needs support its this project. gotta prove that a hiphop album without autotune can still sell

    6. Untitled leaked like two weeks before it was released or sum shit and that sold like what 400,000 copies or something?

    7. The leaks is good for promotion…it’s gonna be a big universal thing, all music lovers of the world, to the grimiest of hip hop fans can appreciate!!!

    8. I haven’t heard the leaks, just b/c I want to hear the songs in the context of the album, but the leaks, at the end of the day, are the label’s fault. If this album has been recorded, and you know that leaks, particularly in hip-hop, are a constant problem, why sit on it for months? If they’d released it when it was completed they wouldn’t have this problem. Instead they make stupid decisions about release dates giving potential leakers every opportunity to do just that. Then, they complain that leaks affect sales. Yeah, they do. Since you know that, maybe you should consider releasing the albums before they’ve had a chance to be leaked. The problem for the entire music industry is that they’re still operating on a business model that worked in the mid 90s despite how much the digital revolution has changed everything.

    9. Been a while since I’ve seen an album leak and have every track be some heat. So. yea I’m coppin’ this.

    10. the leaks don’t matter, this album is gonna be the best thing out in hip hop since anyone can remember..put the ringtone shit to the side and do the right thing..if you seriously support this unbelievable, true music you HAVE TO BUY this album..

    15. I’ll buy this for sure, as the leaks have all been amazing, but something they should really do is get the fucking vinyl out the same day as the CD. I usually cop the wax, and that’s prevented me from buying the record opening week a few times like I have in the past. Bought OB4CL2 the day it came out on CD though, and again on vinyl later. Didn’t wanna fuck around with that one.

    16. People will support this album…because it is a rare to have 2 great artists collaborate and create such great music! Besides most people are saying they waited to long for this album to come out! Plus there is a full EPK with the album! May 18th!

    21. there is a mission we gotta do before we leave this geneneration is destined to do historic deeds, and im gonna tell you this damian marley is ill as fuck when i replay a million times and hear word to word but this album he made it way easier so its like a relaxing cruise with hot air, but its still relaxing, anyways im tellin you i dont care if this album only sell 30,000 copie watch how its going to be looked at in 30 years when we pass the cds down to the kids… theres people that dident sell shit back then no one knew and now they selling everyday like crazy, we all know what we mean, look at what bob marley is to the record label, damian and nas are for shure stamped jay-z is loved but i bet you everthing they say substance last and non sense get lost in the wind so another one picks it up not saying jay is bullshit but compare to nas, even nas is bullshit sometime… but the way he uses his ability to me is hitler gratification with the jews, all i gotta say is love is never forgotten look at mj, seriously im a really good prediction maker, and iv been saying gold is gonna be expensive and it came true and i said water is gonna get expensive and it looks like its already comeing true, and this album is gonna be something that will be talked about, obama from africa, africa unification, by the kings of reagge and hip hop hittin way to real…

      1. I will agree with you to a point. I believe some people are still sleeping on what is going on the world to day. Music breaths life it gives the wake up call for a lot of people to start looking at the bigger picture. It keeps you amused and joyful. It makes you think once you hear it over and over again. It is not how many albums are just sold it is what postives motive has been carried out. This world today some many places are developing and i do beleive africa is still sleeping with all the wealth thats is embedded in that continent. so many people in the villages are suffering hard not enjoying nothing in this life. I respect all what the musicians do- be it nas, jayZ, damian or any other out there that have been on it for years including bob marley. What can we do Now is the question. What can do now in the world today not just consume and conquer. There is some much greed in the governments of africa and misunderstanding between. If people listen to music like this it is like this a little tap at the back and say open you eyes support the people in the villages. that are suffering hard with sickness and poverty. I have seen many things and exprience a lot thats why this album and many other got my attention.

        For the future generation.
what can we do because we are not gonna live forever. we have given one big problem Global warming/ environmental problems health issues are at the rise every day, political issues. I believe sending lots of money in africa to help is not the answer. I beleive sending money to many different countries in this world is not the answer. although it will elevate the situation but it will no eradicate the problem. They want to work they all want to find for themselves. so guru 5 lets all make it happen form today onwards. not leave our children with anger whlist we are all gone. One nation One earth. One love. by 1111111
