Ex-Bad Boy Producer Deric ‘D-Dot’ Angelettie Angers J Dilla Fans With Catalog Claim

Former Bad Boy Records producer Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie has ruffled the feathers of J Dilla fans by claiming he has a better catalog than the late rap legend.

Appearing on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast, the NYC native said: “I love J Dilla to death, but he can’t see my catalog.”

D-Dot — who was a member of the Hitmen production team and co-produced hits like Biggie‘s “Hypnotize,” Diddy‘s “It’s All About the Benjamins” and JAY-Z‘s “Where I’m From” — went on to compare himself to NBA legend Karl Malone.

“Put their shit up against mine. My shit is all over the place. Shit I made 27 years ago,” he added.

D-Dot’s comments sparked a spirited debate on social media, with many Hip Hop fans taking issue with his claim that his catalog outshines that of J Dilla, who crafted iconic beats for A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul and more while innovating Hip Hop production.

One X (formerly Twitter) user said: “This a nutass stance to have on Dilla as a n-gga who used to have other n-ggas ghost producer for you.”

Veteran Hip Hop journalist Dart Adams also responded by saying: “He called his publishing ‘Crazy Cat Catalogue’ & lemme tell ya, this cat IS crazy for saying Dilla’s back catalogue doesn’t body his.

“You had a young Kanye ghost produce for you. You were a Hitman for Bad Boy. You were in Two Kings In A Cipher. You’ll never be James Dewitt Yancey.”

Producer Harry Fraud also chimed in by adding: “Dilla slander will not be tolerated.”

Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire defended D-Dot by saying: “But please tell me what Dilla beat was more poppin than ‘All About The Benjamins’. I’m not gon tell Detroit Fabolous is better than Blade Icewood. Don’t say Dilla was more poppin than D Dot. That’s biiiiiggggg [cap] not enough backpacks in the world.”

He added: “Ummm D Dot changed the way the entire genre sounded and dominated our entire childhood. Are u serious? U telling me Dilla was more impactful than Biggie? In YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD? Bro stop it. What Dilla was playing at Von King park in the Summer? Y’all trying to erase history.”

    1. in GOAT producer convos i’ve had and seen happen over the years, Dilla’s name is often mentioned. i have not heard D-Dot’s name brought up one time, ever.

    2. D DOT was indeed correct. I believe you missed the part where he gave Dilla his props and just focused on the fact of the matter. Dots catalogue has way more hits. “All About the Benjamins” is regarded as the best hiphop instrumental of all time.
      B.I.G . Jay Z , Puffy , Mary J Blige , Mase , DMX, Eminem , 50 Cent , Busta Rhymes … I could keep going. We talking about Homeruns versus doubles.

      1. All About the Benjamins” is regarded as the best hiphop instrumental of all time. AHAHAHAHAHAHA! Where? In Daddy’s House studios? In Justin’s? Stop it. That’s a joke. Dr. Dre alone got at least 20-25 instrumentals in his catalog better than that.

      2. You folks that make a ” “popularity contest” are goofy as fuck. Never grew out of that high school mentality. Speaking Fax?? Smoking Crax.

    3. He’s absolutely right we can’t see it because so many of us are still looking for it, please kill the noise. Carry on!!!

    4. That catalog where you just looped someone else’s songs and didn’t change a thing? When your beat machine ends up in the Smithsonian, then you can talk, bruh.

      1. That’s dumb. I don’t need to make beats to know when someone’s looping something that was already a hit and merely, adds a tambourine, throwaway rnb singer and more cowbell. That dude is a looper. Nothing more, nothing less. He’s nowhere near a Premo, Madlib or Dilla.

    5. That “I got more hits” argument is buns. McDonalds sells billions of burgers. It’s still trash. And D Dot is in no one’s top 10. Dude is the Coke Zero of beats, while Dilla is Iced Green Tea…refreshing and far better for you.

    6. No Dilla slander will be tolerated. Fuck “Benjamins”. When D Dot can do anything resembling Donuts or Cold Steel or Players, he can holler back. Till then, keep on with that shiny suit bs music. Clownshoes.

    7. Dilla made music for the hood. For the real ones. D. Dot made music for the suburbs and puffy parties where you get hugged from the front and back at the same time.

    8. I didnt listen to the clip, but dude coulda worded what he said differently… whose catalog is BETTER and deeper? Dilla’s hands down, no contest… what he SHOULDA said was, “I have more mainstream/well-known hits than Dilla, who is more underground,” which is fine and true. But better or more extensive? Nah son

    9. Dilla is one of the greats only time I ever heard of D Dot in any convo or whatever is when he was doing that stupid Mad Rapper alter ego crap.
