Derek Pope recently stopped by HipHopDX Headquarters and talked about his most recent single, “Raincoats.”
In speaking with DX Senior Features Writer Ural Garrett, Pope also described his transition to singing.
“This is my first kind of adventure into the singing world,” he said via a segment of today’s (September 2) DX Daily. “I was a rapper for the past 10 years, had another project with that that’s coming out later this year. In the meantime and explore a new field.”
Derek Pope also described his influences and says The Weeknd, Arcade Fire and Tame Impala inspire him on the singing side while Del the Funky Homosapien made him want to rap.
“I grew up listening to Del the Funky Homosapien,” he explained. “[It] was the first rap album I ever got. It just showed me that you could just break down a system and do whatever you want. However the structure you want to do it and your flow could be different and that inspired me from the get go.”
