Daniel Caesar has created his own chess league in order to help people like himself who are looking to combat the darkness in their lives.
On Thursday (April 20), the Canadian singer-songwriter took to Instagram to announce that he has created an online chess league through Chess.com. Caesar said that as a child, he had learned how to play chess from his father.

Additionally, the singer noted that when the pandemic hit in March 2020, chess helped him “combat the darkness.”
“My father taught me chess when I was a boy, and when quarantine came around it became the only thing that could help me combat the darkness,” he wrote. “Fast forward a few years later and I have my own chess.com league.. Full circle.. I wish i could explain with words how much this means to me but since i cant just meet me on the board.”

In the post, the singer also noted that he would be hosting a chess tournament starting on Thursday as well.
In other Daniel Caesar-related news, Caesar has been very transparent about himself lately. In a recent interview, he admitted he was wrong for his 2019 rant about Black people, after he defended Caucasian influencer YesJulz.

Speaking to Apple Music 1‘s Nadeska in an interview published earlier this month, the singer discussed the backlash he faced for supporting YesJulz (real name Julieanna Goddard) after disrespectful comments she made about Scottie Beam and Karen Civil.
In addition to her remarks about Black influencers — who called her out for exploiting Black culture — YesJulz also came under fire for tweeting a picture of a t-shirt with the slogan “N-ggas lie a lot” across the front, and asking her followers if she could wear it at a festival.
However, during his conversation with the Apple music host, Caesar noted that he’s since learned a lot about himself and is pouring life lessons into his music.
“I completely understand the response,” he told Nadeska. “And in time, after taking time to get over myself and to really honestly look at myself and everything that was happening, I was wrong. I was wrong, and I’m sorry about that. For a long time, I was like, ‘You can’t do anything, you can’t say anything without whatever.’”

“You can do and say whatever you want, but it’s like for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction. And that’s physics, that’s science. That’s one of those things that the knowledge of that can literally put my mind at ease where I’m like, oh, I did deserve. What happened, happened because I deserved it, because I knocked the domino over and set a course in motion.”
