Dame Dash Says Contracts Aren’t Necessary

During an interview with Hip Hop Motivation, Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Dame Dash shared his belief that contracts are at times not “necessary.” The Hip Hop entrepreneur went on to explain that an email or a music video can be just as effective as contracts since they’re binding agreements.

Speaking hypothetically, he then revealed that an email about a partnership that was made “without a contract” is acceptable in a court of law as long as the partnership is understood in the email.

“If somebody is messing with your business, it’s illegal,” Dame Dash said. “And also, people get so caught up in contracts…Even an email or a video—That’s a binding agreement. So, if you have something that recognizes your agreement—Like contracts and all that [layered] stuff is usually made so a lawyer can get paid. You understand what I’m saying? That shit don’t be necessary, man. An email is a binding contract. If you both move in the same direction—Like let’s say if you have a partnership with somebody without a contract, but y’all both doing partnership shit and you can show it, then that’s a partnership. It’s in the action. If in an email y’all have an understanding and it’s in the email, that’s just as good as a contract in a court of law. I know, I been there.”

Dame later stressed the fact that “people don’t understand business” and tend to sometimes base their business decisions off of emotions.

“People don’t understand business,” he said. “And they think because they have an emotion about something that they’re right. But just cause it makes you feel bad doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It just means that your perspective has to change. But business is business. And a lot of people don’t understand business. They don’t understand—Business is complicated.”
