Dame Dash Berates Lyor Cohen On Joe Budden Podcast: “I Want The Smoke”

It’s no secret that Lyor Cohen and Dame Dash are sworn enemies with little chance of reconciliation.

During last week’s interview with Cohen on The Breakfast Club, he refused to acknowledge Dash’s existence and accomplishments despite their previous business relationship when Cohen was president of Def Jam Records, which distributed Dash’s Roc-A-Fella Records from 1996 to 2004. Since then, Dash has gone public in numerous interviews and on social media to vehemently accuse Cohen of being a “culture vulture” in the Hip Hop industry.

On Wednesday (August 8), Dash made an appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast to continue airing his grievances. At the 1 hour and 34-minute mark, Budden asked, “What exactly is a culture vulture, and why is Lyor one?”

Dash cleared his throat to ramp up his six-minute response slamming YouTube’s Global Head of Music.

“A culture vulture is someone that exploits the culture that he’s not a part of, doesn’t benefit the culture and takes care of his culture, and has no respect for the culture he’s exploiting,” Dash said.

He added, “And that’s why Lyor is one because he’s been making money off of our culture: he is not part of it, he’s been exploiting it. Never helping, teaching or anything, doing what’s in the best interest of his own pocket over the culture. And to add insult to injury, he is not accepted in his own culture. He cannot get no money in his own culture so he comes to ours, acts like a big cat, pretends we need him when we don’t.”

Dash also referred to Cohen snubbing him during The Breakfast Club interview.

“And if someone even asks him a question, he acts entitled like he did on our platform, and he pretends he owns something that he doesn’t,” Dash said. “And they always try to erase our history and act like the people fighting for us never existed, and I think he flagrantly displayed that in public just because he’s so used to it.”

Later in the interview, Dash took issue with some of Cohen’s former proteges in the rap industry, including Julie Greenwald of Atlantic Records and 300 Entertainment co-founder Todd Moscowitz. But Dash is mainly focused on Cohen and wants to settle his beef with him.

“I want the smoke with Lyor,” Dash said.

Budden responded, “Dame, I’ll be honest — I’m going to try to organize the smoke for you.”

Listen to Budden and Dash’s discussion below.

      Fuck off

    3. I’m pretty sure other races use a lot of things white people created or invented to make money. Shit, even the English language black people use originated from white people.

      1. Lmao you mean the language we were FORCED to learn because we were stripped of our own culture ? You edomites are something else. It’s not y’all fault tho. Your ancestors did all the murdering and stealing. You just get to benefit from it without blame. Smh

    4. Was I the only person wanted to see BET do a second season of the Same Dash show ? Mr. Cohen & Mr. Dash need to a live music debate on CNN no commercials . Song of the night Juelz Santana ( Tic Tac )

        1. He wasn’t a snake when dame was making millions with his ass. Was dame calling him a culture vulture then? But now dame is for the people..foh with that dumb logic. Wasn’t dame throwing champagne on chicks. His ass exploited blacks just the same. Oh he black so I guess that makes it ok

    5. Be for real. What has white propel created like really created that wasn’t stolen from another culture? Mostly black people

        1. …you didn’t answer the question. you deflected, which is a typical response for when you don’t have one

    6. Dame is a smart dude, but he obviously is bitter and has some personal issues he needs to address

    7. I don’t understand the “culture vulture” reference.. Lyor been in the game since Run-DMC. If Dame gotta problem with Lyor than I guess he has a problem with Simmons as well. If I’m not mistaken, Russ put Lyor on.

      1. Dame Dash still salty about the whole jay-z split. Understand that part of the reason for Rock-a-fella existed was because of DEF JAM, in which he (lyor) was co-president. It’s a fucking shame how people don’t even know hiphop history. Should we go down the route of how hip hop literally was cultural vulturing during it’s early days from just about every style of music? ie: Wu-tang using Chinese culture to represent. But guess what, only those who are trying to virtue signal are the ones whining.

      1. Dame didn’t leach off of anyone. He was the CEO and pretty much organized the Roc’s success. Stop it with your ignorance….

        1. He did…..have you ever watched the documentaries of the Roc? The Choke no Joke movies? You never saw him call them “quarter waters” at the height of their careers? #ignorance at its finest…..
