Consequence has recalled the unique experience he had working with YNW Melly — one that yielded the “Overdose” collaboration on Cons’ new project.
In an interview with XXL that dropped on Friday (October 13), the Queens rapper recalled how he was able to get the embattled Florida rapper into the studio and to channel his energy — though the session didn’t start off auspiciously because one of the other rappers didn’t know who Cons was.

“I got a little offended by that,” he told the outlet. “I go in another room ’cause I was like, ‘Yo, let me just go ahead, cause of my temper.’ I go in the other room, I start fucking with ‘Overdose’ and Melly had just come back. He got a bunch of chicks with him and shit. A bunch of muthafuckas. He had like 100, a tour bus full of muthafuckas in there. Ironically, the case, whatever the shit is, was around this same time.”
He continued: “He literally was just like, ‘Yo, I got you OG yeah,’ wrote the shit. He just was on some, ‘Yo, yeah I got you, Unc,’ type shit. So he ain’t do nothing but respect me…Then literally the next week I think is when that shit started cooking with the case…So I think this might be the last feature he did.”

The “shit” in question is YNW Melly’s double murder retrial, which was originally scheduled to begin on October 9 after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict in July’s trial.
The 24-year-old stands accused of murdering his friends YNW Sakchaser (real name Anthony Williams) and YNW Juvy (real name Christopher Thomas Jr.) in October 2018, and then staging the crime scene to look like a drive-by shooting.
In the most recent ruling, which was handed down on Thursday (October 12), Judge John Murphy ruled that State Attorney Harold Pryor and two key deputies couldn’t be compelled to testify. As such, YNW Melly’s lawyers were unsuccessful in getting the case dismissed in its entirety.
However, YNW Melly’s team did score a partial win: Assistant State Attorney Kristine Bradley — who has been added to the defense’s witness list — could not serve as the lead prosecutor as a result. As such, she’s been removed from case.
