While the digital age and easier access to musical content has made it difficult for artists to sell their music, one bright spot has always been touring. Musicians have looked to concerts to make up for the lack of revenue streaming in from dwindling record sales. However, due to a poor economy and evolving ticket purchasing trends, even this area of monetary revenue has been threatened. Over the past few months, Rihanna, Maxwell, newly reunited Limp Bizkit, and many others have had to cancel tour dates.
Although a struggling economy is partly to blame for this, differences in consumer behavior is also a major factor according to the Wall Street Journal. Concert goers tend to wait until the last minute to buy cheaper tickets, rather than buying them earlier, for higher prices.
Live Nation Entertainment, the largest live-performance company in the industry, told WSJ that such trends are not different from the norm. “Cancellations are a part of the business and in fact the number this year is in line with past years,” says Jason Garner, Chief Executive of the company’s concerts division. “When 40% of tickets across the industry are going unsold, you have to have an honest talk about ticket prices.”
The only musicians who seem to attract audiences despite a poor economy are artists like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. Parents tend to feel more comfortable buying tickets for their kids to these shows than they would for other concerts. However acts like the Jonas Brothers and even American Idol all-stars have faced tour cancellation due to poor ticket sales.
Cancel the whole shit.
It sucks.
Feels good to see them doing bad.
Its not about them doing bad.
Its about us doing better.
Damn REALITY1111 you the biggest hater here. You openly admit to wanting them to do bad because shit ain’t like 96. Stuck in the past with the nostalgia goggles on blinding you to the fact that shit wasn’t as good as you think.
Fuckin loser
“Its about us doing better”
That is what I posted.
“you the biggest hater here”
Biggest hater?
I’m trying to improve people. How could I make a statement that reads “Its about us doing better” Then read a response about hating?
It makes no sense.
Your post make no sense.
Reality..i agree with you man, im glad these shitty artists are doing bad now
Wow… It’s pretty funny to read all this ish. Niggas really dont understand someones opinion is just that THEIR opinion. Just cuz i think Slaughterhouse is hot doesnt mean u gotta think the same. Would u start ish cuz someone likes pepsi and u like coke. Bottom line hip hop is hip hop if u think its needs to get better then wait til it does then shout out the album cuz this E Thuggin ish is retarded I can just see niggas hittin keys on their computers all hard and shit just cuz the next man doesnt agree. DAMN I LOVE HIP HOP!
there is a “web//site” named “b l a c k // w h i t e // C u p i d” for dating or relationship, black or white singles can go there to find something sexy or beauty online !!!! 😉
common sense would tell them come down off there ego and book smaller venues. Maybe not everybody is buying tickets but some people are, and those that do should not suffer cause you tryin to fill big ass stadiums. Remember “some” money is better than “no” money.
Awesome observation…..watching some of these performers in a huge stadium can be like watching a goldfish in an ocean some times…..Not everybody is Michael, Not everyone is Elton or Prince…..
if they didnt take the piss with how much the charge for albums and concerts, then ppl would be more likely to buy their product. I’m sorry, but i don’t want to be paying over the odds so that 50 cent can get a new mansion or lil wayne can get a new lambourghini.
the money that goes into making an album is far more then you would have to pay. the artwork, the production, the distribution the publishing all cost more then 12 dollars at best buy so stop complaining. i see your point with people like 50 and wayne but if you like that artist you should support them.
BWS-FISH isn’t complaining. They are stating what they think about the situation.
DRM1 is complaining because you are the one that is upset with BWS’s opinion and trying to tell them what to do.
NEW FREESTYLES!
CHECK ME OUT!
GREATEST GAY RAPPER OF ALL TIME PEEP THE CHANNEL!
ACAPELLA FREESTYLES CHECK IT OUT!!!!!

ticket prices are way too high… im from aus and pre sale tickets for Winterbeatz concert (t-pain, neyo and big boi) were $240!!! (aus dollar is bout .87 US cents). Fuck that shit rather go see BoB performing at a club for $60!!!!!
i agree, no one wants pay that much money for tickets sells … the ecomony is broke. Parents ain’t giving they little girls money see Jonas Bothers. lol that was shocking to hear that had to cancel
I cosign Em fan #1, Reality1111 is just an old hating ass nigga. If you have a problem with hip hop today, then go live in a cave with your old “real hip hop” cassette tapes. Why you always commenting negative stuff on this site? If you have nothin nice to say dont say nothin!
#sidenote: Eminem’s new album Recovery is a classic. Whether theSource gives it 5 mics or not.
HAHAHAHA!!
I don’t have a problem with hip hop today. It sucks. Why would I have a problem with it?
Don’t you get it yet?
“Why you always commenting negative stuff on this site?”
Its your opinion that my comments are negative. I think my comments are 100%positive, because I am making the best out of the situation and giving readers another avenue to consider.
Now judging by your post with your sidenote “#sidenote:”
See I don’t think you are a fan of hip hop I think you are an advertiser trying to sell something.
“If you have nothin nice to say dont say nothin!”
See this proves you do not have any idea what is going on. I’m not “saying” anything. I’m posting comments on a webpage. All my comments are 100% positive. If you don’t think so, you are just misinterpreting things, that’s all.
So figure it out.
Dude.
You can’t call an album classic when its only been out a few weeks. Aside from the fact that it will never be classic (and I really like Recovery, but come on…), you’re missing the point of the word ‘classic’. It has to stand the test of time first.
How I Got Over, Distant Relatives and Sir Lucious Left Foot are all great albums, better than Recovery, but I wouldn’t call any of them classics cos its too early to tell.
“You openly admit to wanting them to do bad”
Wanting who to do bad?
This shit is such garbage right now that if they actually stopped doing what “they” or “them” are doing and concentrate on what they should be doing they would be doing BETTER.
You’re the one misinterpreting the words.
You are a hater. You are EVERYWHERE bitching about how shit ain’t what it was 15 years ago. FIFITEEN FUCKING YEARS AGO!
Go to Ihatehiphop.com so you can bitch with all the other faggots that hate hip hop yet CONSTANTLY COMPLAIN. Take that bitch shit somehwere else
Always having to defend yourself, always trying to justify yourself, always projecting your negativity onto others.
Destructive personality…. everybody run the other way!
reality1111 is a dumbass. u always have to go back and explain everything you said. learn to say it right the first time. suck it, you little bitch
OMG 2 stupid responses.

maybe its because their music is garbage and people are catching on to a bunch of hyped up bullshit and want to see ARTISTS
REALITY1111
Tell me. If you had a friend that was negative ALL the time. Wouldn’t you get tired of that shit eventually.
Dude EVERY SINGLE POST you write is negative. You NEVER have nothing postive to say. And even if its positive you close it with some negative shit
“Dude EVERY SINGLE POST you write is negative”
That’s your opinion!!
Don’t you understand that!!
It seems like more people than not agree with me on this particular top, anyway.
And to EM FAN #1 I have one more comment for you.
HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the reason is people want to hear good music and alot of artists arent delivering it.they go with the fad and not what they want to do.look at 90s music it was better in every genre.
play smaller venues if you cant sell em out
and yet tech n9ne strange music tour as been selling out every arena they play in along with 200 dollar vip tickets. and insane clown posse is seeling out every spot on thier tour and extending the tour. so i ask u how is hip hop doing bad now that people refuse to pay for garbage.
Hate to break it to you…ICP is not Hip-Hope! I’ll give you Tech N9ne I suppose…even though he’s a turd
Hip-Hop*
tech9 is a turd. that made laugh
ticket prices?! haha yea right! Who would seriously listen to that garbage music?! c’mon..People nowadayz wanna hear some good music, not some cheap ass artist!
Actually MAXWELL just did a nearly sold out tour the end of 2009… his people were just being greedy and put together another tour too soon … he’ll sell out again after this next album comes out in 2011.
Rap acts rarely sell out arenas b/c rappers are usually awful live performers (except kanye, weezy, em & jay-z)…R&B acts with real talent have no problem selling tickets… Prince, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, EWF, Beyonce, Mary J and Maxwell do very well when they tour in arenas…
Rihanna is just not a strong entertainer (although she sells out arenas in Europe)… she needs to watch some Madonna, MJ & Janet videos.
“When 40% of tickets across the industry are going unsold, you have to have an honest talk about ticket prices.”
no fucking shit you jackass, maybe if you’d stop price gouging every single tour into the ground you’d sell tickets. no show needs 200$ seats, that’s fucking retarded. oh, and the service fees? get fucking real, like throwing a 20$+ charge on every ticket is remotely necessary.
you fucking morons are running the concert industry into the ground, and only the huge popular artists (jay-z, eminem, lil wayne, dave matthews band, smashing pumpkins, etc) and the small yet have a huge grassroots fanbase bands (try any smaller semi/underground band – converge, thursday, bring me the horizon, brand new, every time i die, taking back sunday, etc) will survive.
and the juggalos? they’re fucking retarded too. they’ll buy into any shitty product with ICP’s logo on it cause they’re desperate for “family” aka fellow methheads. they’re like KISS back in the day, but at least KISS made music, not bullshit.
Rappers should all be as smart as 50 and invest in summin you cant D/L, like Vitamin water.
Hate 50’s music but the man knows how to hustle
If rappers would focus on putting a better show together ticket sales would increase. People want to come out and see a performance not just someone walking back on forth across the stage.
Concert sales are down across the board for just about everybody in music though, rock bands too……..just sayin
Pay millionaires? No.
Use your money to help others who have less than you so they can step they game up? Yes.
Have you people figured it out yet?
So you don’t buy anything because almost anything you buy supports millionaires in some way.
Unless your ass buys everything at mom and pop stores, local stores and give to bums or charities or under privlage children or something (which I highly doubt) you need to get off your high horse there.
You’re no superhero. You’re not waking any up to bullshit we already know. You’re just an asshole who is negative and try to twist shit in your own reality. This is the FIRST time you actually said “I’m no supportin no millionaires” every other time you’re writing a fucking essay about how Hip Hop hasn’t been the same since 96
Keep insulting, criticizing and telling people to fuck off Mr. Positive!!!!
You still don’t get it.
What tha fuck are you 2 talkn bout? Neither one of you are droping knowledge so fuck it.
My friend told a me a hot dating place ____ matchrich.com ____, where you have the opportunity to make friends and chat with a millionaire or hot girl ,supermodels and so on.First i can’t believe, then i sign up there.I found celebrities’ profile with sexy photos and newest blogs there. you can know more about them. By the way I really got many friends including celebrities. it’s so exciting.
“So you don’t buy anything because almost anything you buy supports millionaires in some way”
That line is a bunch of bullshit.
Um not its not bullshit. If you bought a video game, you’re supporting a million dollar company ran buy a millionaire. If you own an Iphone or even a cell phone you’re supporting a millionaire.
If you buy a movie DVD you’re supporting multiple millionaires. So its not close to bullshit
I don’t buy video games, phones, movies or DVD’s don’t you understand that?
I already have a phone, I don’t need two phones. So yes I purchased 1 phone in the past 10 years, but the other stuff I NEVER buy.
lol Reality is not in reality if youve never purchased any media items in 10 years. At least not in hip-hop reality.
You don’t have to purchase media items to know what is going on.
@EM Fan #1
Just keep advertising and trying to sell stuff.
We know you’re not a hip hop fan.
You’re just part of the machine trying to get more money.
Not even close. I didn’t advertise a damn thing. Those spam comments that say shit like “black-sex.com” is advertising its bullshit.
I am a hip hop fan. I’m just real about it. If I made a negative comment about the state of hip hop I’d own up to it. I’m also like 90 million people who bought Eminem albums, a fan of his music.
No I’m not part of some machine. I’m calling YOU out on your bullshit. Which you have YET to logically defend yourself. You’re just using what I say then ad some jiberish to it
Hey EM Fan #1
Has Eminem ever been negative on a record?
Has Eminem ever criticized someone?
Has Eminem ever told someone to fuck off?
Has Eminem ever cursed and used profane language to get his point accross?
Has Eminem ever made any references to hannibal lector or some other mass serial killing moron?
And would you consider that reference to be positive or negative?
Answer those 6 questions Mr. Positive.
I never claimed Em was Mr. Positive. I said he’s the greatest
However, that doesn’t change the fact that everything you post is negative bullshit.
This isn’t about Eminem, if it was I would never say he was always positve or negative (he’s made both types of songs). yet here you are over defensive not admitting that you’re just a negative complainer like all the other dudes stuck in 95. Every time I read something Reality1111 its some negative bullshit
em is garbage always been he is only a good free styler on wax he sucks people buy into hype people are followers 90% of these rappers today are garbage hip hop has lost its way and real talent that it had in the past.
“everything you post is negative bullshit.”
But guess what it has a positive meaning to it.
“Pushed him into the stinking tub
Cut him up into pieces and just
When I went to drink his blood”
Positive or negative?
Answer the goddam question.
You know who those lyrics are from? They are not mine. Do you think those are the only lyrics that particular emcee uses? Do you think they have more lyrics like that?
Answer the goddam question.
You are such a jackass! Everytime I log on to this site I ‘m forced to read your complete non sense. Do everyone a favour and FUCK OFF
While you were spamming the article trying to “refute” something I never said I was enjoying life.
Yeah Em said some crazy shit. and it was funny we laughed but he made Not Afriad a postive song. He made songs that sound negative but have a positive meaning to it
“He made songs that sound negative but have a positive meaning to it”
Great and I’m doing the same thing.
So why don’t you realize that.
Rock the Bells people!!!!!! L Boogie, KRS,The Ruler,Wu,Rakim ect. Aug 21. Damn I love Hip Hop!!!
Oh and answer my question. Do you spend money at or for big name items? Or do you only shop at mom and pop shops.
How often are you giving? Or are you just talking bullshit.
There’s not anything wrong with spending things on shit you want. But you’re making it a mission to make sure your views say “I don’t spend shit on these rappers, but they suck anyway”
If I’m not mistaken you left a comment saying you haven’t a bought an album since 95 (could be you or someone else, if it wasn’t you who typed that them I’m sorry)
So you’re opinion has no weight. That means the over the last 15 years you heard a bunch of shit but didn’t pay for a single one. So yeah fuck your opinion. Nobody buys EVERY CD but most people have atleast bought a handful in the last few years
You need to get a life. You spend your all of your time comments on other people opinions. Go out and get some ass or something.
I’m gong to limewire Maxwell concert!!!
Fuck your opinion makes no sense, that is the point.
Everybody has an opinion
No, like I said I only spend my money when it can help someone step their own game up. I carefully choose where I spend my money, and if it can help people I spend it. If the money is going to some millionaire corporation I don’t spend it.
It isn’t as difficult as you are making it out to be.
Yes, you can spend all of your money the right way, and that is what I do.
“That means the over the last 15 years you heard a bunch of shit but didn’t pay for a single one” I’ve heard a bunch of shit over the past 15 years, not only from music, from a bunch of people. Doesn’t mean I pay every single person from what I heard from them. You can charge people for your music, but you DON”T HAVE TO. That is the point. You can give stuff out for free if it can help people. Not everything HAS to carry a price tag.
I give all the time and try my best.
I’m not a billionaire, but if I can produce something for free and disperse it I will.
I do the right thing.
I just don’t go out and purchase stuff for the sake of spending.
Yes I spend a shitload of money, and none of it, if any, goes to millionaires, it goes directly to the people. Average hard working people, like I said, so they can step they game up.
I don’t need to add another trophy to some millionaire’s trophy case.
agree 100% with Yungmotown9521
“Everytime I log on to this site I ‘m forced to read your complete non sense”
See this kind of sums it up for all these new cats here trying to be a part of hip hop.
YOU’RE NOT FORCED TO READ ANYTHING!!!!
If you don’t want to read my posts, don’t read them!!
If you see the reality1111 logo on top and you don’t like what I write, DON’T READ IT!! I’m not taking your eyes and gluing them to the computer screen and saying “Here motherfucker you better start reading or else” I’m not saying that.
Nobody is FORCING you to read anything.
It is so funny how people who go out and promote and try and get you to buy one of their products how they can get away with just about anything without receiving criticism. Yet the second I go onto this site and just talk or post about what I feel. Ya’ll start getting crazy and telling me I’m promoting and forcing you to read.
I’m not PROMOTING ANYTHING!!! There is no link to buy a product.
I’m not FORCING YOU TO READ ANYTHING!! If you don’t want to read, and don’t want to respond that DON”T!!
That’s why I’m the real hip hop because I know how things go down, ya dig.
“atleast bought a handful in the last few years”
Yes I did buy about 30-50 albums BEFORE the internet was created, because that is the only way I could listen to the music. I couldn’t go log onto youtube or download back in 1994. So I bought albums from 1984-1994.
So I am real, I supported my fav artists.
And if anyone starts doing it the right way I will support them with my purchases again, I’m just not seeing that right now, so understand it is what it is.
and if I want to make an attempt to be a part of the game I can make the attempt.
One of my friends who I’ve known for years, chills with Redman and has for years.
If I wanted to promote myself I could make the attempt.
I may not be successful, but I could at least try.
I DON”T try. That’s the point. I don’t want to be known with this era of emcees. I’d rather wait and watch the game develop. I don’t need money, and I don’t need a record deal. Nor do I want one at this point.
Besides when I tried to get involved years ago, like go into the studio, or work with the equipment, etc. these dudes start acting like dickheads and don’t really give me the time of day. They acted like I was good talentwise, but when it came down to do something they didn’t pay much attention to that. They try and make me praise them and play second fiddle to them. I could get the time of day if I wanted and pressed the issue but I’m not like that.
I’m about getting money, getting laid and going to restuaraunts and eating good.
That’s about it right now. I’m not interested in busting my ass for hip hop. I’ll do a few things here and there, and will keep following, no doubt.
I’m just not interested in having to be a part of something where people don’t treat me correctly. I don’t need that shit.
I’m happy in life, have money, eat good and get laid, and when I can I try and help out other people.
It is what it is.
Ya know it’s too bad it’s gotta be like that, but you can’t help but think that quality has something to do with it, not mentioning any names, but some of the new acts could be a lot better, and their stage show is probably non-existent considering they don’t put much thought into their music… At the same time, that’s how things have been when I’ve done shows and had pre-sale tickets… You end up with people buying tickets at the door more than buying pre-sale even if they are discounted, it’s odd but thats the way I’ve known it to be for years unfortunately it’s hit the mainsteam artists too.
Support the music, buy a cd! Every show I go to I buy any cd’s available to keep this thang alive, and I buy the cd’s from the mainstream that are actually worth while…
Buying CD’s has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with keeping this thang alive.
First in my opinon it’s good to have pyro and a jumbo tron but do you really need that. Big time artist should incur some of those cost because it enhances what they do. Take away the smoke and fireworks and the artist still has to perform and do it as good as the album but with live improvisation. One of my earlier concerts was MC Hammer I was 10 or something and at the height of U Cant Touch This and 10 million albums sold in small markets his tickets were no higher than $15 bucks. Drop the ticket price and people will go in instead of parking lot pimp. I would love to go to a good show but I can take $60 bucks and have a better time doing something else at that ticket. Come down rich man, come down.

Wait what the fuck site am I on again.
This is a hip hop site, correct?
And you people think keeping good music alive is about buying a CD or buying a concert ticket?
What the fuck is wrong with some of you people you are lost.
That’s what I’m saying I don’t even think there are real hip hop fans on this site, it is just advertisters looking to sell merchandise.
Keeping good music alive is about the artist stepping up and inspiring and making people say damn that i’m copping that soon as it hit the street. Concerts are apart of the game, we love a good show and to see how others react to the same music you like. The audience gets to bond wit one another. Music lovers push the sales of albums and tickets but we need better product and people that we deem worthy of us to pay our money and see them do the damn thang. Why pay $50 bucks to see eight niggaz on the stage and only one supposed to be rapping not to mention your energy as the audience drives the whole show and not the band or the artist.
I agree with part of what you said.
I’m sorry though I don’t agree with you that album sales or ticket prices has anything to do with making music better.
Whether you think so or not, music does not have to cost a billion dollars to produce. People have equipment, people have studios. To me a studio or recording equipment is like a gym. Whether people use the equipment or not, the value and usefullness of the equipment will not diminish. For example say a gym is closed from midnight-5AM, that means I can’t work out from midnight-5AM. However if I get into the gym somehow and start working out on the equipment, the equipment will not diminish in value and whoever owns the gym will not lose money.
Do you see what I am getting at?
Producing music is nowhere near as costly as you make it seem. You can use the equipment in a recording studio, make an album and download it onto the internet. That is not a million dollar process.
That is why music sucks nowadays. Everyone is concerned with making money. They are not concerned with making music.
You may agree or disagree but I believe that if you make a great album you DO NOT have to charge people. You can disagree, that is fine it is your opinion. However it is not AGAINST THE LAW TO MAKE MUSIC and HAVE PEOPLE LISTEN TO IT FOR FREE.
Its all about the live show. Problem is, a lot of these artist suck live. Artist like Tech N9ne sells out in 2or 3 days and hes not even on the radio or tv. Its cause the energy at his shows is crazy. Most of these guys have a bunch of their friends on stage hyping…themselves. It ruins the show. I saw drake on tv and he was singing with his eyes closed like he was singing to himself, whack. At least get a live band to play the tracks. Shit, hire the roots, idk, but these artists need to step their live game up or they wont sell shit at those prices.
