Compton has enjoyed a run in Hip Hop that just never seems to cease momentum. At this point, the city’s municipal administration has even started to promote the scene that gave them a national spotlight.
There isn’t a better example than their support of clothing line City of Grind.
Fronted by Compton natives Tyree, King Jahar, Q Weez and Bleezo, the line has already gotten some heavy co-signs.
During Dr. Dre’s promotional run for Straight Outta Compton last year, he wore the brand’s popular sweatshirt featuring Compton’s official city insignia in photos for the Hollywood Reporter cover story alongside Ice Cube. The Aftermath Records founder also shouted City of Grind out during an episode of his Apple Music radio show “The Pharmacy.”
This year, Kendrick Lamar was caught sporting the same thing during his “Witness Greatness” commercial for the 2016 Grammy Awards. Those who caught Game’s “Roped Off” music video featuring Boogie and Problem should have noticed the red City of Grind shirt as well.
According to Bleezo, the line, which has been around for nearly three years, came after the creators made an unspecified deal with the Compton’s government. “So legally, we own the actual ‘City of Grind’ logo so nobody else can use that and that’s real Compton,” said Bleezo. “We’re even trying to get school uniforms for the Compton Unified School District. We not going to get put on from the name, we’re giving back to it.”
Bleezo has also been making noise around Compton as a rapper. At the top of the year, she released her second mixtape The Put On, which featured the single “Hub City.” A click on her SoundCloud page reveals that the single has reached 22 thousand streams without significant co-signs or press.
Today, she drops the video for “Hub City” which was shot around Compton and features City of Grind as well. The video should also set Bleezo up for the eventual release of follow-up project OMG which stands for On My Grind.
