While appearing on “The Morning Riot” on WGCI, a radio station in his hometown of Chicago, rapper/actor Common offered words of positivity to the streets of Chicago.
When asked if he’d like to give a message to the streets of his native Chicago the rapper spoke on loving yourself and also addressed the pointlessness of taking another person’s life.
“I’m just gonna say what’s the purpose of taking somebody’s life if it ain’t helping yours or anybody around your community,” Common explained. “Gotta love yourself man. Think about, man, God created us all. We all good people man just try to spread some love and elevate. Think about the things you wanna do in life cause it’s tough hearing that people in the Chi – it’s young people dying.”
Common later expressed his appreciation for the many accomplishments he’s achieved in his career after being asked if he had any idea that he’d be where he is today.
“Nah, I didn’t. I mean I knew that I wanted to rap,” said Common in a video posted on FakeShoreDrive.com. “I knew I wanted to be a Hip Hop artist but to take it to these levels to be able sit down and have a [gala] with Harry Belafonte and to be able to talk with Maya Angelou and be invited to the White House. Or see myself on the movie screen. It’s incredible so I feel it’s a blessing. I just keep dreaming higher and I want to inspire the young people to dream higher.”
Common also spoke briefly on Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap, the upcoming documentary directed by Ice T.

Common’s foundation, Common Ground, is partnered with Chicago Scholars, and has been doing work to help young people for years now. CNN, BET and others have recognized the foundation’s work. And Common does inspirational speaking at schools, and community centers in addition to his work in Haiti and elsewhere.
