Common Says He Wants The Youth To “Dream Higher,” Sends A Message To The Streets Of Chicago

While appearing on “The Morning Riot” on WGCI, a radio station in his hometown of Chicago, rapper/actor Common offered words of positivity to the streets of Chicago.
When asked if he’d like to give a message to the streets of his native Chicago the rapper spoke on loving yourself and also addressed the pointlessness of taking another person’s life.
“I’m just gonna say what’s the purpose of taking somebody’s life if it ain’t helping yours or anybody around your community,” Common explained. “Gotta love yourself man. Think about, man, God created us all. We all good people man just try to spread some love and elevate. Think about the things you wanna do in life cause it’s tough hearing that people in the Chi – it’s young people dying.”
Common later expressed his appreciation for the many accomplishments he’s achieved in his career after being asked if he had any idea that he’d be where he is today.
“Nah, I didn’t. I mean I knew that I wanted to rap,” said Common. “I knew I wanted to be a Hip Hop artist but to take it to these levels to be able sit down and have a [gala] with Harry Belafonte and to be able to talk with Maya Angelou and be invited to the White House. Or see myself on the movie screen. It’s incredible so I feel it’s a blessing. I just keep dreaming higher and I want to inspire the young people to dream higher.”
Common also spoke briefly on Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap, the upcoming documentary directed by Ice T.

      1. @Anonymous nigga how is this a publicity stunt? he just preaching to the youth that their is more out there in life than killing eachother be in touch with yourself and know what U wanna do in life Fuckin dumb ass little kid yo ass be posting on Hip Hop Dx every fuckin day nobody wants to hear your negative attitude graduate High school first bitch Common one of the realest MC’s to ever do it clean out your dirty ass ears FAGGOT and listen to what he was saying Bitch.

      2. Roger Rabbit– look at what your wrote nigga… your language and typing ability is similar to an 8th grader… using curse words becuase you can’t formulate an educated response…

What anonymous is saying is that Common is FAKE because he don’t even live in Chicago… he dont have any charity’s going, and he don’t do shit for the Windy City… so don’t get but hurt because your favorite rapper isn’t as socially conscious as he pretends to be!!!!

      3. @NY777 Common has a place in Chicago as well as Brooklyn. He has a business in LA because he works in film, obviously.

He doesn’t have “charity songs”?? He has a CHARITY and the majority of his songs are socially conscious. What are you talking about???

Common’s foundation, Common Ground, is partnered with Chicago Scholars, and has been doing work to help young people for years now. CNN, BET and others have recognized the foundation’s work. And Common does inspirational speaking at schools, and community centers in addition to his work in Haiti and elsewhere.

Say what you want about the man but he is one of the few who puts his time & money where his mouth is. Do some research before speaking on what you clearly do not know.

      4. NY777 obviously listens to Drake with all of the windows down at a loud decibel level.

He’s from Chicago, you dickhead. He does for Chicago, you bitch ass nigga. He is Chicago, you retreaded retard. The hell does him living in BRENTWOOD, CA have to do with anything he’s doing for his hometown, or lack thereof?

I swear you niggas are some of the biggest examples of not only the schools but the parents failing kids. Bitch ass niggas.

      5. But after his last publicity stunt, people suspect Common may be giving the impression kids no who he is….

      1. Yeah man. Common keepin 100 on that statement. I live in st louis and we know how niggas be killin up in chi town. Shit east st louis (which is in IL. border) is rough to. I always thought black on black killin was fucked up anyway. If you got beef with another nigga throw them hands to settle some static don’t pick up a gun hunt that nigga down and kill em.

      2. But the only people like him (like me) download his music, pretend that it’s better than is, are over 25 and cringed hard when he pulled that cheap drake publicity stunt!

      1. but says it’s going to be hard as the the only kids who know him are related and they listen to anything but Common

      1. Um, you must be 10 years old. Drake couldn’t destroy a fly tbh He couldn’t even respond so he sent out a press release LMAO!!!

      2. Swag is obviously a boy who has been touched in between his legs multiple times by an older man.

      3. So promises NEVER to start beef with a semi-talented popular young rapper who doesn’t have classic’s and claims to like and be influenced by your music….

    1. S/O to Common threw out the pitch at the White Sox game today and he’s doing a fundraiser for his foundation in Chicago. That is why he did this interview.

Common has always done work for the community. Ask somebody!

    2. Common Says He Wants The Youth To “Dream Higher,……

So offers two 16 year olds the choice of anal and dinner or just regular anal.

      The choose former.

    3. Common Says He Wants The Youth To “Dream Higher….

So he creeps in kids rooms at night, straps them to roof and uploads the videos to youtube

    4. So asks them to turn of his shitty music (everything after “Be”) and focus on educational studies – listening to audible sounds and credible lyricists..

    5. So he is going to commit suicide @ a local school to show them what failure looks like, and how it should be rewarded.

      1. I’m from the UK we can “analyse” 16 year olds perfectly legally over here.

        Jealous?

    6. But this Common fan has had enough.

STOP weed bro, get back to the lab. Focus on the music – maybe a concept album or co-lab album – switch it up – you can’t act bro!! Give that up…

Nigga – you fucking up your legacy….

      (crying)

      “I love used to H.E.R”

      1. yeah, the dreamer/the believer got good reviews. i still bump it save for 2 songs it’s real solid

people will be eating their words about common’s acting with these next movies. watch for it.

      2. Haven’t looked into it further but read on DX a few months ago that Common and Nas are supposed to come out with a collab entitled NasdotCom

      3. Like I said pretend all you want – you wont be bumping it for much longer.

I aint Drake fan – but Common is on his was to nowhere with that NOID shit.

As for Nas plus Common – he wishes. Nas shot that down the other day.

      4. Like I said pretend all you want – you wont be bumping it for much longer.

As for acting…. yeah sure, well see. lol

Highly acclaimed??? Fuck a critic – do know how many highly acclaimed albums I have brought – but don’t actually listen too after a few months. Classic my fucking ass.

    7. DRAKE AND BIRDMAN REALLY HAD COMMON SHOOK COMMON WANTED TO KEEP IT ON WAX. COMMON LOST ON WAX AND REAL LIFE WHEN HE APOLOGIZED TO DRAKE AT THE GRAMMY’S HE ALSO WAS TALKIN ALL ABOUT HOW HE A FAN OF DRAKE. LONNIE IS JUST A 40 YEAROLD LITE SKINNED GROUPIE THAT KISSED QUEEN LATIFA

    8. and he started with Drake. He sorted him out real good & got him doing the Wheelchair Jimmy & stayin in his lane. lol Drake aint tryin to “catch a body” no more….*cryin*

(Drake is 25 but still calls himself a “kid” so he applies)

      1. I didnt write that.

If I did – I would have considered that didn’t really happen. Common manufactured some bullshit to promote his “real” album – which features poppy singing on at least half the tracks.

Then I would of formed this as basis for a punchline that starts, as the others, did with my name….

Common Says He Wants The Youth To “Dream Higher,”…
but struggled to convince them when he seemly failed to provide an accurate reason why he felt to attack a rapper miles beneath him…

…. see how it works?? Now you try.

    9. these drake fans still spam lonnie articles after all these months? wow lol it must’ve cut these stans deep!

    10. these drake fans still spam lonnie articles after all these months? wow lol it must’ve cut these stans deep

    11. REAL TALK LONNIE DO MORE INTERVIEWS ON THE RADIO THEN HIS SONGS GET PLAYED ON THE RADIO IT MUST BE TOUGH OUT THERE FOR HIM. HOW LONNIE ALBUMS SALES LOOKING LMAO. IT WAS A WRAP WHEN HE DROPPED THAT TECHNO ALBUM WHERE SKATE BOARD P GAVE HIM THE WACKEST BEATS HE EVER MADE THEM THROW AWAY JOINTS

      1. Everything you said is a lie. Common didn’t put out a techno album. Common don
‘t need to sell records or have his songs played on the radio; he’s a hip-hop legend. Respect your elders, young one.

    12. There’s nothing Common can say to make people forget that when he saw Drake, he got all star struck, and quickly apologized for his little temper tantrum diss track. The youth know the truth, and the truth is Lonnie has never gone platinum.

      1. Shut up, ignorant young Drake fan. everything you said is a bunch of bullshit. Aubrey got star-struck at Common and apologized for subliminally dissing him. Common served that ass and Drake knows it. Common don’t need to go platinum; he’s a hip-hop legend.

    13. IamhipSlop-

Dude you’re on crack lol Drake is a million times more popular, relevant, and successful than Common ever was, even in his prime. I think you’re looking at Common’s wealth and assuming that makes him a legend. That makes him rich. That’s it.

    14. “Respect your elders, young one”

Why? What are they doing for hip hop today? You could say respect KRS and most wouldn’t argue that cause of his longevity, but then you could say respect Kool G Rap and that makes a young one shake his head and ask why? What has G Rap done to deserve Jay Z type respect?
