Cole Makes A Diamond In New York City

New York’s SOB’s was packed to capacity last night (March 30, 2010) in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the Freshman of the Roc (Nation), J. Cole, at HOT97’s Who’s Next Live showcase. Cole provided selections from his Warm-Up mixtape along with a handful of freestyles, plus versions of “Dead Presidents” and “Get By” to which Talib Kweli jumped onstage with Hi-Tek to perform. Guests in the building included Statik Selektah, Domingo, Asher Roth (who assisted opening act Outasight), Young Chris (who also performed with Cole) and fellow Freshman 10, Pill, among others.

Despite being a newbie to the game, Cole took to the stage like a champ with precise delivery to a crowd who knew every song by heart. He recounted a story of being a student at St. John’s and going to see Kanye West perform at SOB’s, wishing he could be on that stage. “About seven years ago today I came to New York City,” Cole told the audience. He also handed out signed copies of his current cover stories with The Source and XXL to several adoring fans, including two who had to sing for them.

While sending several nods to Jay-Z and the Roc(a-fella) of the past, J. Cole made it clear this was the new dynasty. “I’m on Roc Nation” he stressed to the crowd. “This isn’t 2003.” He also sent a warning shot to any rappers in his lane and any sleeping online. “Get back to Rap you dudes tweeting too much,” he said. While many new rappers have been surrounded by unwarranted hoopla, J. Cole proved he was worthy of all his praise.

    1. I can’t believe you stupid fucks thinks he is doing anything good for hip-hop, whats so original about him? J-Cole? Jay-Z , J this- J That. You are brainwashed to think anything with a J is automatically ganna top charts, get outta here. Nobody fucks with JCole, only the same people who made all the way turnt up, hip-hop is dead, everything now is just a eulogy

    2. The J in his name has nothing to do with Jay-Z (who is actually named Sean Carter), J. Cole on the other hand stands for Jermaine Cole. Did you want him to go legally change his name before getting signed or just make up a alias that has nothing to do with himself?

      Just curious.

    3. Industry, shut the fuck up if you dont know what youre talking about.

He was calling himself J. Cole before he even met Jay-Z, back on The Come Up. Just like Cleanz said its because of his government name.

And Cole isnt the same as “all the way turnt up” in fact he’s the opposite. He going to be bringing back real hip hop

      1. drake is the “pop” artist, j.cole is an artist that might have a record that makes it to pop charts.. j.cole is much more genuine and authentic with his recording process.. his depth is unmatched by drake.. both talented.. it will be interesting to see how they develop..

    5. I’m really excited about J.Cole. His delivery is so raw and with Jay & Kanye behind him, he has the potential to be something special. Plus I like that this dude was turning down guest spots and going to parties with people like Puffy because he says he feels like he didn’t earn it yet.
