DaniLeigh received backlash on Thursday (January 21) after sharing a snippet of her new song “Yellow Bone,” which featured lyrics about her partner wanting a light-skinned woman. Moments after posting, she was called out for using the term “yellow bone” and accused of taking aim at the skin tone of MeMe — her partner DaBaby‘s ex-girlfriend and mother of his child.
Later that day, the Miami native attempted to justify her actions with a since-deleted tweet involving a backhanded apology.
“Congratulations y’all gotta another thing to say about me when u hate,” DaniLeigh said on Twitter. “it’s all good .. only God can ‘cancel’ me… that shit don’t mean shit to me bc the people around me are the ones that know my heart and intention and real life … I’m sorry if I offended u .”
Many people including Alabama-bred rapper Chika were less than impressed by her reaction to the controversy.
“This is a terrible response to valid criticism,” Chika wrote. “No shade. as a black woman, you should be more than aware of colorism & why this song wouldn’t sit well with a black audience. it doesn’t feel good having a billion people at your neck, but it’s not about being ‘canceled.’ it’s about taking accountability.”
DaniLeigh initially responded to the public response in the comments of her Instagram video, before deleting the post altogether.
“Why I can’t make a song for my light skin baddies??” she wrote. “Why y’all think I’m hating on other colors when there are millions of songs speaking on all types.. why y’all so sensitive & take it personal .. gahhhh damn.”
Despite the public response, DaBaby commented with several yellow emojis.
Following her original tweet, DaniLeigh continued with more Twitter posts calling out “haters” and telling people to “stop playing” with her.
“YALL DON’T KNOW ME,” she said. “Ima keep letting God bless me .. while y’all sit back and judge me && sit behind y’all lil phones and type shit about another woman .. y’all all HATERS. Done talking .. bout to post how fine I looked yesterday.”
She added, “Y’all NOT FOR ME. And I said is what he want !!!! Not what the world want … I’m talking bout myself … stop playing w me .”
Whatever happened to if you don’t like something you don’t support or listen to it? Firmly convinced in this generation way too many ppl legit wake up, hop on the internet, and look for some reason to be offended.
Isn’t that what they’re saying- that they DON’T support the song? Just as ole girl has the right to make the song, people have the right to dislike it and voice why they hate it. I’m pretty sure, you’ve posted an opinion on the internet of a song or artist that you didn’t like so don’t be a hypocrite.
Zero talent. If you ignore them, they go away.
Right!!
Fucking crybabies finding anything to cry about … pathetic humans that are only alive because our society coddles the weak
I agree to all comments below…all this girl is trying to do is shed light on light skin girls. I see no shame in it as other races do boast about being what they are and acknowledging their heritage/skin tone. Also you dam well know that light skin black people get sh!t from people who are darker then them a majority of the time. We are in a race sensitivity time right now…maybe bad timing of the song and or people need to stop being over sensitive
Listen to the lyrics. Had nothing to do with shedding light on anything. She was basically taking a personal jab at her man’s ex and using skin tone to do it. She brought the hate and got hate back. It is what it is. Besides, last time I checked, people have just as much of a right to dislike the song as she had to to make the song.
Y’all goin on about this trash, why not go after tha brotha!! Non African American chics being disrespectful!! Don’t support this crap!!
So had Saweetie or any other light skinned African American girl made the song it would be cool? Also, how is she being “disrespectful”? Sounds like you have a little bit of low self esteem and a low sense of self image. If you had a good sense of either, you would not even feel that way about a woman making a song about HER own skin.
No it sounds like DaniLeigh has low self esteem for taking jabs at her man’s ex by using skin color. If she already got the man, why does she feel the need to write this song or bring up her skin color in relation to why her man is with her over his ex? Other lighter complexioned women like Beyonce have written songs about being a ‘redbone’ and NO ONE complained, because she didn’t make comparisons between her and darker women nor did she bring a man into the discussion. Beyonce also has no problems with complimenting darker women either, so her songs mentioning skin color will be better received.
so she didn’t put on her thin lizzy today.
Sensitive ass milenial bullshit. Get the fuck off social media and just make music for the masses. Different songs for different crowds. I could care less what you think if its not in the form of a song. Settle your differences on wax, not twitter. I really wish musicians would spend more time on the phone and less time on stupid social media.
Always the fat nasty big bitch yapping why nobody wants her..typical.
Chikka chillout..you dope but stfu.
We all love redbones and a song is cool.
White folks didnt trip about black bro from Angie Stone…its appreciation not hate
It’s always colorist dusties that get mad when people tell the truth. Her song was TRASH.
