Chance The Rapper has released a very political song — appropriately, on Inauguration Day.
The Chicago star put out “Quiet Storm” on Monday (January 20). The track, appropriate to its radio-themed name, is set up as Chance’s on-air song dedication to a special someone. But as the song goes on, it becomes clear that Chano is actually talking about, as a press release explains, “a representation of oppressive colonial powers and the western governments that have long impacted marginalized communities.”

“I know your specialties — espionage, sabotage/ I know your tendencies — crashing out, caviar/ You like the finer things, designer things, China things/ Things from Africa — you so good at fuckin’ findin’ things,” he raps.

The single is a continuation of themes that Chance has explored throughout other new efforts, all as part of his Star Line project. In fact, the Big Day rapper has been so deliberate in rolling out the still-unreleased album that last summer he threatened to delay its release further due to the way fans were discussing it.
In a video posted on Instagram on August 13, the Chicago rapper laid out his issues with his followers referring to his upcoming project as “the album” and not its official title when interacting with him on social media.

“Alright, so this was the main point I was trying to make: stop calling it ‘the album,’” he said while riding on his tour bus. “And I don’t mean that in an ungrateful way. I’m grateful that people are putting in my comments, ‘Drop the album.’
“I’m not finna drop the album until y’all start calling it Star Line. I’m not gonna drop the project, I’m not gonna do these installations — I got so much shit ready. But I hope that y’all understand that.”
Chance continued: “‘Drop the album’ — that’s for all the other artists, for everybody else whose work I also appreciate. But what I’m doing is something different. It’s something very specific. It’s called Star Line.
“So if y’all gonna press me for the project, don’t put ‘drop the album’ in my comments ’cause it makes me feel like y’all don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been saying one specific phrase for like two, three years now. I’ve been saying Star Line.”

Chanco then said that if fans start calling it Star Line, then he may release the album sooner: “If y’all say, ‘Drop Star Line‘ enough, it’s gonna make me drop Star Line. When y’all say ‘the album,’ it confuses me.”
