Cassidy: Freedom Song

When Cassidy went to jail for involuntary manslaughter, producer Swizz Beatz went elsewhere to share his tracks. But soon, the artist famous for “I’m a Hustler” will come home and when he does, Swizz will be ready for him.

Swizz spoke to MTV about his protege and gave insight as to how they will go about creating his next project. According to the producer, Cass will be home in less than two months. The producer also said he hopes to finish the album by this Summer.

“He’s ready. He said he wants to spend a week or two with his family [when he gets out], then [record]. He said he wants 200 beats. When he’s in the shower, he wants to hear a beat. When he’s playing with his son, he wants to hear a beat,” he said of the rapper’s ambitions to record again.

Some may wonder why he wants to release an album so quickly after incarceration.

“He wrote so much stuff when he was in [jail]. He has a lot of explaining to do to his fans. He has a lot of stuff to get off his chest,” he said.

Although Cass was found guilty, Swizz believes he is innocent.

“[The judge had to] give [Cassidy] something to make an example…But he’s not guilty of the major charges. He will be a free man. I talk to him every day. He’s feeling he should have been [innocent] of everything. I had to let him know he was facing major charges and there’s a person not on this earth anymore. But these things are worked out in the court. It worked in our favor, he can’t wait to get out and put out his music,” he said.

Some of that new music is old music re-done.

“We might repackage [2005’s I’m a Hustla] with a couple of new cuts,” he added.

After that, the new music will come with a lot of social commentary on Cass’ part.

“Not to say he won’t still spit those bars to bite people’s heads off lyrically — he’s preparing for that, but he’s preparing to be an example out there for the youth…He wants to share his experience so they won’t be in an experience he was in.”

Currently Swizz is in the lab with various artists including Styles P., DMX, Eve, Drag-On, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
