Cardi B has taken some time out to reminisce on the not-so-fond memories of when the FCC and conservatives were up in arms over her 2020 smash, “WAP.”
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday (June 28), the Bronx rapper made sure to remind her followers of the struggle she faced with the now 7x platinum song.

“Y’all remember when the FCC almost sued me cuz I performed WAP at the Grammys? What about when all the republicans literally harassed me over it? On the news everyday… Y’all remember? Oooohhh cuz I do,” she tweeted.
According to the FCC, more than 1000 complaints were lodged against Cardi and her “WAP” collaborator Megan Thee Stallion after the pair performed the song at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Angry viewers apparently thought the performance was “obscene” and “pornographic.”
While they performed the song at the Grammy Awards, the song wasn’t actually nominated for one – and Cardi B recently revealed it was because she was worried about what the internet would say if she submitted it for consideration.
The platinum-selling hitmaker explained her trepidation during a January sit-down with Jason Lee for his eponymous REVOLT show.
“You know what?” Cardi began. “This is something that — it’s like, I need to stop letting the internet control my life. Because I didn’t want to submit ‘WAP’ because I was afraid that if I win or if I… You know what’s so crazy? The internet got me even afraid of winning. That is insane.”
The sex-positive smash arrived amid the pandemic in August 2020. Debuting in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, it made for the first female rap collaboration to do so while also making for the largest opening streaming week for a song in U.S. history at the time.

The track went on to spend four weeks on top of the chart and spent multiple weeks at No. 1 in several other countries as well. Just under three years later, “WAP” has been certified 7x platinum by the RIAA.
