With the release of Cam’ron’s latest project, Ghetto Heaven Vol. 1, the Dipset founder stopped by New York City’s Power 105.1 to speak on his newly-released mixtape and his relationship with Jay Z.
Although an ongoing feud, the gripe between the two lyricists again surfaced when Jay Z brought up the rapper during his verse on “Pound Cake.” On the Nothing Was The Same record, Jay Z raps, “I’ve done made more millionaires than the lotto did / Dame made millions, Biggs made millions / Ye made millions, Just made millions / Lyor made millions, Cam made millions.”
During his interview with The Breakfast Club, Cam’ron addressed that particular lyric and went on to state that he didn’t feel the mention from Jay Z was a diss. Cam also revealed that his music is currently banned at the Jay Z-owned 40/40 Club.
“If I’m off the radar, just leave me alone,” said the Crime Pays rapper. “Once you say my name, my antennas go up a little bit, but I don’t really consider it a diss. He had made a comment and I made a comment back on a record. So, it wasn’t like a back and forth thing. I just answered kinda what he said, but I think he had something against us a little bit. Like you can’t play our music in the 40/40 Clubs…What kind of hate is that?”
Cam’ron, who fired back at Jay Z’s “Pound Cake” mention with the Ghetto Heaven Vol. 1 track “Come And Talk To Me,” also addressed a recent incident in which Freekey Zekey was kicked out of 40/40 Club.
“Eight bouncers came,” said Cam. “He called me later that night. They kicked him out. He was there for a whole ‘nother event and then like eight bouncers came and surrounded him.”
Cam further commented on his past issues with the Magna Carta Holy Grail rapper as he spoke on his time at Roc-A-Fella Records and revealed his unwillingness to “be cool when somebody giving you they ass to kiss.”
“He just put himself on a couple of records, but I wasn’t feeling what he did, so I took him off the song. Yeah, I wasn’t feeling the verse,” said Cam when asked if the song was “Oh Boy.” “And I’m not dissing him or nothing. I like Jay’s music. He’s dope or whatever. But I just wasn’t feeling the verse. You know what I’m saying? I’m not gonna lie about it. And then it really went South. He went somewhere or something and then Dame offered me a job to be vice president. He made me an offer. And I felt yeah, Jay Z probably felt that they didn’t consult with him. And everything kinda went South from there.
“These are questions I can’t even answer,” he added. “I don’t know why. You know what I’m saying? But I just know when we first got there we tried to be cool and you know it’s only but so long you can try and be cool when somebody giving you they ass to kiss.”
As a feud that has lasted well over a few years, the issues between Cam’ron and Jay Z have played out with a handful of diss records. In 2010, The Diplomats rapper targeted both Jay and Kanye West on “Toast,” as he rapped, “And Kanye, you a sucka nigga / Diss Dame, so my attitude is fuck a nigga / Sucking Jigga, how you gonna live with that?”
Jay Z’s collab with Drake, which Cam referred to as “mad random,” serves as the first time either of the rappers has referenced the other in quite some time.
