Brandy has been pranked by her daughter Sy’Rai, who teased her mother with the lyrics from Kaliii’s hit single “Area Codes.”

The R&B singer was phoned up by her daughter earlier this week, and in a video reshared by The Shade Room, Sy’Rai can be seen trying to keep her laughter in check during a phone call with the R&B star. Sy’Rai’s mother, at first concerned, starts off by plainly asking: “What’s wrong?”

“So I got a white boy on my roster,” Sy’Rai replied.

“What does that mean?” Brandy asked.

“He be feeding me pasta and like lobster, mama,” she continued, to which Brandy asked, “Who feeds you pasta and lobster? Who is this person?”

“He hit me up on Tuesday like what you doing babe let me take you shopping,” Sy’Rai replied, which Brandy protested and said was “an immediate no.”

“I told him I’m a little busy and he told me he’s in my city. I’m reading our text it says hey it’s okay hope you have a good day I’m going to send you 850 dollars.”

Brandy continued to protest, asking why she’d accept money from this person when she didn’t even know him, and again asked how her daughter came to meet this strange “white boy.” Sy’Rai then bursts into laughter, saying it’s a prank.

The lyrics were pulled from Kaliii’s new track “Area Codes,” which has been steadily rising in popularity since its release earlier in 2023 – even making for her Billboard Hot 100 debut when it arrived at No. 54 on the chart dated May 20.

Speaking to Complex about the song’s success back in June, Kali denied the track was in homage to Ludacris’ smash 2001 hit of the same name – and disclosed that she’d never even heard his version.

“I didn’t even know there was any connection,” she explained. “Like, I never heard the Ludacris song before. So when people asked me that, I truly didn’t know what they were talking about. It was just super organic. When I hear people saying, ‘Oh, this is a Ludacris homage,’ I’m like, ‘Okay, but I really didn’t know anything about it.’ It was just like I literally felt like I got hoes in different area codes.”

Criticism poured in, but Kaliii ignored it. She noted in a separate interview with HipHopDX last year that she was instead listening to Nicki Minaj and Aaliyahciting them as her inspirations.

“First off, I’ve got to give props to my mom,” Kali told DX. “She’s so tough, she’s so hardworking and she made me, obviously. She made me to be the person I am today. Also, Nicki the queen … she has definitely inspired me musically and creatively and Aaliyah. She [Aaliyah] was one of my favorites and just like her swag and how she carried herself was just really dope and I want to embody that.”

“Also, my grandmother raised me to a certain extent,” she continued. “I love her. She’s the person that pushed me to just do me and do what I want to do. I would also have to say my manager, she’s a mom to me, so my ‘momager,’ she’s my best friend’s mom and is the person who was like, you know what? We gonna do this thing, I’m gonna make sure your business [is] handled, I’ll make sure nobody play with you and we’re gonna take over.”
