English singer-songwriter Boy George recently took to Twitter to voice his criticism about Eminem’s latest song, “Rap God.”
“Fag? Is this really recovery talk or are you running your own program these days?” George tweeted. “Really unhelpful.”
The former Culture Club singer also commented about his disappointment in the media’s reception of the track.
“Isn’t it sad how the media just accepts abuse of gay people? #fucked.”
The song’s first instance that contains gay slurs is in the first verse. Em is heard rapping, “I’ll still be able to break a motherfuckin’ table over the back of a couple of faggots and crack it in half,” the second verse includes the line: “You fags are all the same.”
Eminem’s latest song also features the lyrics, “Little gay-looking boy / So gay I can barely say it with a straight face-looking boy / You witnessing massacre like you watching a church gathering taking place-looking boy / ‘Oy vey, that boy’s gay,’ that’s all they say looking-boy / You take a thumbs up, pat on the back, the way you go from your label every day-looking boy.”
Throughout his career Eminem has been the recipient of criticism about his music containing gay slurs.
In 2001, Eminem performed a duet of his hit single “Stan” with Elton John, an openly gay singer, at the Grammy Awards. The advocacy group GLAAD subsequently issued a statement calling the collaboration and Eminem’s music “hateful.”
Eminem told The New York Times Magazine in 2010, “I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want.” That same year, CBS/CNN’s Anderson Cooper (who has been open about being homosexual) asked Em in a 60 Minutes interview if he was “homophobic,” to which he responded,
“The scene that I came up in, that word was thrown around so much, you know? F****t was, like, it was thrown around constantly, to each other, like in battling, you know what I mean?”

Let’s start with it as a given that music is an art form, including rap. Huffington Post, Rolling Stone, Salon et al. are perfectly fine with, say, anti-Christian paintings such as Piss Christ without knocking them as biased or prejudiced. Or anti-cop rap lyrics. Or a depiction of a Bible being flushed down a toilet as art — while at the same time seeing a depiction of a Koran being flushed down a toilet as a hate crime, more or less.
Denigrating or insulting the religious beliefs of Catholics, let’s say, who represent about 25% of the population of the United States is fine, but denigrating or insulting the sexuality of perhaps 3% (10%?) of the populace is terrible because the targets are homosexual males? Gimme a break. If it’s art, it’s art. No matter whose ox is being gored.
