The day has finally arrived. After seven years of a grueling dialysis regimen, Blackalicious MC Gift of Gab has checked in to the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona for a long awaited kidney transplant.
The surgery wasn’t expected to happen until March but on Friday night (January 31), he got the call he’s been waiting for. Fortunately for Gab, he launched a GoFundMe campaign earlier this week to help with his recovery. The initial goal was set at $8,000, but he’s already raised over $20,000.
On Saturday (February 1), Gab hit up the Blackalicious Instagram account to provide his fans with an update.
“I got a call last night saying your kidney is ready, be here by 10 a.m. tomorrow,” he says. “It’s about 9 right now. I’m on my way to the clinic to get my new kidney. I want to say thank you to everybody that has donated to the GoFundMe.
“We’re going to keep the GoFundMe going for another week ’cause I’m going to be out of work for probably three months and I gotta pay for lodging and all of that good stuff. I’m already grateful, but anything extra just makes it easier for me to heal. Thank you to everybody once again.”
As Gab promised in the initial video, he updated his fans shortly after checking in to the hospital. Dressed in a hospital gown, Gab filmed himself on a hospital bed being rolled to the floor where he’s going to have his surgery.
“Yo, I want to thank everybody for the GoFundMe support,” he says. “Send out prayers, send out positive energy for me. I’m about to go under and come back with a new kidney. Bow.”
A kidney transplant typically takes between three and five hours to complete. In the meantime, donate to Gab’s GoFundMe here and check back with HipHopDX for updates.
Hope he pulls through. Dude is one of the best lyricists out there, like Black Thought on steroids. Blackalicious and the whole Quannum crew had an amazing run back in the day, I’d encourage anyone to check it out if they never heard it.

PRAYERS UP FOR A SAFE PROCEDURE
Why you ain’t go no Savings Account Mr. Rapper, why you asking the public to fund something you’ve had 7 years to prepare for? He’s not even paying for the surgery. I’m just saying millions of people have major surgery every year, y’all out here giving this man over 20k. Not to mention this greedy muhfuka more than doubled his Target and he’s out here leaving it open. Some of y’all stupid.
Bro it’s not like they were ever that huge. Always underground. Like Sean Price said bro most rappers are broke
you have no idea what you are talking about. Surgeries of this magnitude are no less than $100,000 for the procedure, recovery, medication, and rehabilitation. Not to mention his bills and family obligations. No one has to give him anything but like the good book says “Ask and you shall receive. People have the right to ask for whatever they want. I hope everything goes well with his procedure.
Evidently you know nothing about Kidney Transplants in the US. A Kidney comes from either a living or deceased donor, if you have Medicare like he should the surgery is paid for in full, they also pay 80% of associated costs related to recovery, medications etc. Everyone has bills and family obligations, and there are thousands upon thousands of kidney Transplants done every year & they don’t ask for charity. He should’ve prepared more for this day.
If it’s costing him over 100,000 why was he only asking for 8k ??
The man looks like he is morbidly obese. Pretty sure his kidneys would have been just fine if it wasn’t for his shitty diet and lack of exercise. But nah, why bother, just let everyone else pay for your medical care bills and keep shoving down that junkfood down your throat.
His album 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up ?!!!!!!!!!!!!! Certified classic! Get well bro!
Cool. updating on way to surgery. take care man!
Pity how bitter so many people are. Some one dies and people can’t wait to dance on their grave, and bring up their misdeeds in life. A person swallows there pride reaches out to their fans and says “hey I need help.” Hundreds or perhaps thousands of people whom he touched with his music pitch in what they can to save his life, and you shit all over that. A person could risk there life and save a baby from a burning building and some of you are so bitter you’d find something negative to say about that. Do yourselves a favour try to be more positive beacause negativity will slowly kill you, believe it.
Welcome to the internet. This is how people really think. What you see in real world is fake smiles and bullshit. This is how people really feel deep down inside. It’s beautiful isn’t it.
Yeah way to mischaracterize the situation. Ain’t nobody “pitching in to save his life” the surgery is paid for, they’re pitching in to pay his bills. He’s capitalizing on his mild celebrity status to pull on people’s heartstrings while you fatten his pockets, meanwhile your blue collar Uncle that has open heart surgery ain’t getting no GoFund Me. It’s the fact the world is cold and full of b.s that people think like this. Pay your own bills.
Plenty of regular folks have created a go fund me page or perhaps had a loved one create one when they had a particulary shittyvset of circumstances and needed help, and you know what people came through for them too and then some, so that point is moot. But I suppose you’re correct maybe they didn’t necessarily save his life.
To “Guru” and “What a piece of shite, eh?” (fitting name for you). I gladly gave to his GoFundMe campaign because this dude has added value to my life. (You may not have had that experience, it could be that MC DoesNothingInHisLifeButLieToYou has been the one that has touche your life). This dude’s music has provided a soundtrack to soooo many of my best days with songs like Make You Feel That Way, etc, so I will gladly part with a little bit of money to aid someone like him who has hit a big challenge in life. It is a way that I can give back directly. For you to @#$% on someone who is going through some real life challenges is a very low thing to do. You should hope that the day that you have to humble yourself to ask for help, that there are people that respond and try to lift you up. …………………… “What a piece of shite, eh?”, you are uneducated. With kidney failure, fluid builds up in the tissues, causing swelling and weight gain. Many people with severe kidney disease or kidney failure are actually undernourished. The excess swelling can make it difficult to breathe and increase your blood pressure. Stop punching down. Did you ever see Phife Dawg in his last year, the same thing happened there.
God bless man and have a speedy recovery !
