Black Thought Of The Roots Planning To Release Solo Blues Album

Philly emcee Black Thought may serve as the front man for The Legendary Roots Crew, but that title isn’t keeping the rapper from branching out to release a project of his own. While speaking with TheUberUrban.com, Black Thought shared his plans to release a solo blues album that will instead focus on his talents as a singer.

Black Thought also spoke on the artists who have helped along the way with the project, including R&B crooner Raheem DeVaughn and Jim James of My Morning Jacket.

“I just started writing a couple of weeks ago for a blues album kinda that I’m going to be singing on. I don’t know what it’s gonna be called, but it might be called The Talented Mr. Trotter,” Black Thought revealed in a video posted on NahRight.com. “And I’ve been writing with Raheem DeVaughn and my friend Ray Angry. I’mma be in the studio this week writing with my friend Tunde from a band called TV On The Radio. I’mma be doing some stuff with Jim James from My Morning Jacket. Just some stuff that I feel like I need to get out that is kind of aside from the new Roots record.”

Prior to speaking on the blues-infused album, Black Thought explained what it’s like working in a corporate setting over at Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

“It’s as much fun as I can probably have and still be in a corporate environment because there’s very much a corporate setting and a chain of command that’s very different than what I had necessarily been used to,” said Black Thought. “I’ve been my own boss since I was about 18, 19-years-old. So to have an employer and then someone that he works for and someone that he works for. It took a little bit of getting used to, but it’s lots of fun every day.”

    1. I think a Black Thought blues album will be dope, however, I’d appreciate that solo hip-hop joint first. Damn BT can we get that before it’s all said & done?

    2. He’s a pretty dope singer as well, obviously not nearly as good as he as an emcee.

I don’t really care if he does a solo hip hop album. Every Roots album focuses on him as the emcee anyways, with some guest verses sprinkled throughout.

I’m not sure how it would sound with Thought having a full album of drum machine beats. I’m sure he would still make it dope, but he’s one of the few emcees who’s flow sounds so natural with a band that I’d rather not see him with a bunch of same ole same ole beats everyone else has.

      1. He’s been rapping solo on every Roots album. A solo album would just be Black Thought on beats not made by ?uestlove. What’s the point?

    3. Cool man, kinda random but I love blues and it seems a little sad to me that blues and hip-hop haven’t mixed more, so I dig this. Hope the album is tight.

    4. i THINK that when people say that they want that solo BT rap album that they are curious of how he would sound over sum Primo, flying lotus, Alchemist, or even some Hit Boy…….a BT solo album with similar music to roots(even though they dont totally stay the same) would be a waste. and also he would have to branch out into subject matter he has never touched on.

    6. Black thought, please give us a solo Hip Hop Album
Judging by that Recent joint-Rage is Back, we need a Black thought full album.Nigga Nicer than most of these corny, no name lames. Period!
Few can measure up to his skills
and we would love to see a black thought-Nas collob|
      That would be Groundbreaking

      1. What’s the point of a solo rap album? Have you not noticed that Black is the only/main rapper on the Roots albums? A solo album would be like a Roots album, but with lesser production. That would be like a step backwards.

    7. black thought needs a hard hip hop lp produced by madlib
featuring big daddy kane , mf doom , schoolly d , guilty simpson , rakim and mos def (yasin bey)
      peace…..
