Black Thought and El Michels Affair have released new single “Glorious Game,” ahead of their upcoming album, Grateful, which is expected to drop later this spring.

On Monday (March 6), the Roots MC shared the announcement about the new single in an Instagram post.

Due out April 14 via Big Crown Records, Grateful will serve as a follow up to another collaborative project Black Thought was recently involved in. The iconic wordsmith released his joint album with Danger Mouse, Cheat Codes, back in August 2022.

The project peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard 200 chart, with features coming from Raekwon, Joey Bada$$, Russ, MF DOOM, A$AP Rocky, Run The Jewels, Conway The Machine and others.

The critically-acclaimed effort was crowned one of the Best Albums of 2022 by HipHopDX and earned Black Thought a nomination for the Biggest Hip Hop Comeback of the year.

During an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe following its release, the Philly native responded to claims that he’s an “underrated” MC.

“I think over the years I’ve definitely felt like, yeah. I mean, people, everyone says that,” he said at the time. “Everyone I meet, ‘You’re so underrated. You’re so underrated.’ Or in interviews, it’s, ‘How do you feel to be so underrated?’ But yeah, I don’t know.”

Black Thought previously released his Sean C-produced debut solo album Streams of Thought, Vol. 3: Cane & Able in 2020, recruiting the likes of Pusha T, Swizz Beatz, Killer Mike and ScHoolboy Q for features. The LP followed the 9th Wonder-produced Streams of Thought, Vol. 1 and Salaam Remi-scored Streams of Thought, Vol. 2, both of which arrived in 2018.

In other Black Thought news, the rapper recently dropped a captivating new freestyle titled “Love Letter To Hip Hop” in honor of the genre’s 50th anniversary this year.

In the video, which aired on BET, The Roots lyricist traverses the history of Hip Hop completely acapella, weaving in many of the genre’s biggest legends as he explores rap’s evolution over the last five decades.

Along the way, he shouts out Grand Wizzard Theodore, Grandmaster Flash, JAY-Z, Diddy, Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, TakeOff and many others.

“We rose to become entire ecosystems/ It’s wild to think about how long the people have listened/ 50 years down the line we could spark this/ My eternal beloved Hip Hop/ Is where our hearts live and that’s word,” Black Thought raps in the black-and-white video, which was directed by Benny Boom.
