Black Thought Comments On Next Roots Album, Says He’s “One Of The Five Hottest Emcees Ever”

The Roots’ next studio album may still be a ways off, but according to Black Thought steps are being made to craft the group’s next LP. While speaking with Hard Knock TV, The Roots’ emcee revealed that there’s about 10 compositions he’s currently chosen to work on for the album.

“The next album, we’re not that deep into it as far as having stuff recorded. There are about less than 10 musical compositions that I’ve kind of already chosen to write to,” Black Thought explained in a video posted on 2DopeBoyz.com. “When we’re writing to the music that’s gonna be on The Roots album, it’s not just me writing verses. There’s Dice Raw who’s kind of like my writing partner and co-producer. And there’s P.O.R.N. and Truck North and STS, it’s like a whole kind of slew of emcees and vocalists who kind of get the music as we select it. It’s a virtual competition to see who comes up with the best concept. Whatever fits the whole composition best.”

With MTV’s “Hottest MC’s In The Game” list still very much a topic of conversation in the Hip Hop community, Black Thought was also asked to give his thoughts on the much debated list. The rapper didn’t offer up much of an opinion on the actual list, but did instead speak on there being artists out there who have caught his attention.

“I’m not really too hung up on the rappers of the moment. It’s a lot of nice dude who are doing really good stuff around here. And I’m able to appreciate what everybody’s doing. I’m one of the five hottest ever, of all time, so that’s where I’m at with it,” said Black Thought.

Black Thought also rattled off the list of rappers he believes are the best in the game and they include Kool G Rap, Rakim, Chuck D, KRS-One, and Big Daddy Kane.

    1. “Black Thought also rattled off the list of rappers he believes are the best in the game and they include Kool G Rap, Rakim, Chuck D, KRS-One, and Big Daddy Kane.”
Too many rappers like to pretend the 80s was the only time with good MCs.

    2. Fan of Black Thought but top 5 hottest MCs ever??? That doesn’t make sense popularity or artistically. As far as popularity goes there’s like 500 hotter then him, and artistically/skill wise Eminem, Pac, Rakim, Kane, Nas, Jay, Biggie, and many others are ahead.

      1. you obviously haven’t heard this mans catalogue or his intricate rhyme patterns yes hes better than b.i.g and eminem in my opinion and i have listened to their best lyrical displays.

      2. eminem talk too much teenage garbage shit too be considered…

but kane Biggie and Nas is a def problem for blackthought, these are lyrical groundbreaking mcs.
If Jay would have stay on some real mc shit like in the 90s who knows…

    3. next album should be amazing they keep getting better
Dice raw is becoming a monster and north and p.o.r.n. sts is nyce also
      love the roots features
don’t know if he is top 5 hot
but definitely top 10 of all time

    4. Top 5 lists are subjective. If Black Thought isn’t in mine he only misses it by one or two spots. He’s nice as hell! And I know nobody would agree with my top 5 dead or alive, but who cares?

      Slick Rick
      Pharaohe Monch
      Nas
      B.I.G.

in no particular order with the 5 spot filled by Pun, Mos, Black Thought or Ghostface.

    5. i agree wit evrything black thought said he is top 5 and i’m waitin’ on the next classic from the roots.

    6. black thought got a deep catalogue and if andre 3000 says he himself shouldn’t be considered the best when you you got emcees like black thought out here putting out heavy weight caliber bars that says something in itself tariq is top 5 dead or alive from organix up until now the roots have elvated their craft every album ask any real lyrcist out from talib kweli to blu(exile) will tell you the same they got google and youtube for a reason no need to debate the proof is there from the freestyles and stellar albums black thought is the modern day Big Daddy Kane .

    7. fuck a blues album

get dr.dre/premier to executive produce it

make a real hip hop classic

    9. Dude is nice but top 5?? come on man… enjoy your late nite check and be done with it. Most rappers don’t have a retirement option… Not even top 20.

    10. not saying this nigga isnt hot…BUT…in 2009 Eminem and Mos Def shitted on him on that Cypher…i never heard this nigga go one on one with other rappers

    11. whatsup with everyone giving their list whenever an artist give theirs?

      1 krs one
      2 2pac
      3 andre 3000
      4 rappin’ 4-tay
      5 50 cent

      1. anytime a rapper gives his top 5 or whatever the comments section blows up with people giving their top 5s or 10 when have these kids never heard black thought rhyme

    12. DUDE IS DOPE AND HE GOT BARS, BUT TO SAY HES IN THE TOP FIVE IS A LITTLE CRAZY FOR HIM TO SAY…U GOT ABOUT A DOZEN MC’S IN HISTORY THAT ARE AHEAD IN LINE.

    13. I like how hes top 5 MC and not rapper, because there is a big difference in the two.

As for all the top 5 lists I see, it`s hard to do a top 5 since there are so many dead and alive rappers who could be in the top 5. A top 10 is more realistic to do in this time of age since Hip Hop has been around for awhile now.

    14. I DON’T REALLY SEE HOW NIGGAZ NAME CHUCK D AS ONE OF THE BEST EVER…YES, THE MESSAGE WAS GREAT, BUT HE WASN’T REALLY A DOPE MC.

    15. Definitely Top 5 MC.

I know 80% of fags on here don’t even know who Black Thought is. Big diff. between that gay ass shit you homos listen to, RNB Rapper Future n shit like that.

      1. And why’s that? He has far more lyricism, deep music and bangers than any one rapper in the pop charts. He deserves #1 but people like you are deluded and don’t know what the sound of real rap is.

    16. Fuck Wack Thought! Hopsin will kill that motherfucker like he shot that pussy faggot nigga Tufag Shakur!

    17. Black Thought is one of the most underrated ever, but probably this is the only main category where he belongs to the TOP5. On top of that, he used the term “hottest” to describe himself, which was a really unfortunate pick.

Just take a look at MTV’s annual list, as its the purest explanation of that word. Is 2Chainz the second best rapper currently at ANY skill involved in rapping? Or Big Sean? A$AP, Future or Meek Mill? No fucking way. But they’re all hot right now, which means they have a significant buzz (which has little to do with their skills), constant radio play, mainstream attention, fanbase with cashflow therefore decent sales.

So back to the topic – why would be Black Thought “one of the five hottest”? Oh, and not just now, but “ever”? But again, any other term representing the superiority of his skills or his long-time significance in the music industry would be a missed one. You could be an excellent MC without a solo LP, Crooked I is the perfect example for that, but claiming to be hot just because your alleged skills is a mistake. As much as I love The Roots, Black Thought is incredibly wrong on this one.

    18. nah! diz old ass nigga aint hot. maybe ur uncle listens to him but young niggas dont like old washed up wack rappers. YMCMB and MMG run da rap game. dey are da best MC cuz dey sell da most. swag

      1. Lil Wayne
      2. Drake
      3. Rick Ross
      4. 2 Chainz
      5. Meek Mill

      1. LIL NICCA ONCE UR BALLZ DROP AND U DO THE KNOWLEDGE U WILL FIND OUT IF NOT FOR A DUDE LIKE BT NONE OF THEM WACK SHOW PONYS U MENTIONED IS EVEN NEAR HIS RELM..THOSE ARE NOT EMCEES YOU MENTIONED THOSE ARE SHOW PONYS WE TALKIN RAP NOT PROSTITUTION.

    19. If there was a Mount Rushmore of Rap.

It would have KRSI. Pac. Rakim. LL.

      Those are your rap forefathers.

      1. Pac’s great and all, but I think Melle Mel would fit it more properly. He’s been around for a lot more time than Pac, along with Ra, KRS and LL.

    20. 1.illadelph halflife
      2.organix
      3.do u want more?!!!??!
      4.game therory
      5.phrenology
      6.how i got over

… how i got over need better hooks

      no singing

    21. I think its really time for a black thought solo major producer studio album without the roots think that would put him on another level

    22. FUCK IT, THERE ARE JUST SO MANY EGOISTIC RAPPERS LIKE THIS NIGGA HERE. ONE OF THE BEST RAPPERS EVER? HE’S JOKING, RIGHT? HE NEVER SOLD PLATINUM, HE BARELY EVEN GOT GOLD IN THE ERA WHEN EVERY JACKASS HAD AT LEAST DOUBLE PLATINUM.

HE AIN’T SHIT AND ROOTS AIN’T EITHER. HE SHOULD REALLY TAKE AN ADVICE FROM REAL, DOWN TO EARTH, HUMBLE AND TALENTED ARTISTS LIKE DJ KHALED, KANYE WEST, LIL WAYNE, ASAP ROCKY OR BIRDMAN. THEY WILL NEVER HAVE TO CLAIM THEIR POSITION IN TOP OF ALL TIME LIST BECAUSE EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT THEY ARE THE BEST.

      1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

GOOD JOKE. NO, KILL YOURSELF FOR ALL OF THE BULLSHIT LIES YOU SAID.

      2. @yebo what kinda fuckin’ name is yebo and who are you to be hatin’ on one of the best groups of all time the roots ? you a faggot for that.

      3. Thought has been laying down rhymes consistently for 18 years without ever plundering into redundancy. But by todays standards, an excellent lyricist typically ranks below any chart-topping puppet fastened to the strings of a major label. No wonder Thought’s hardly ever mentioned among the upper echelons of rap greats.
