Well over a decade after the release of their album Masters Of The Universe, Binary Star spoke with KevinNottingham.com about what went into the creation of the album.
While speaking on the album both One Be Lo and Senim Silla explained that when creating the songs for the album they weren’t focused on 16 bar verses or perfect hooks. Instead they revealed that they were more focused with getting their point across regardless of how many bars it took.
“I remember when we first came home, Decompoze was like, ‘16 bars and a hook.’ We were like, ‘Fuck 16 bars and a hook, doe. Fuck 16 bars and fuck a hook.’ When you listen to that album, you don’t really hear any 16 bar verses on there,” said One Be Lo. “You don’t really hear a hook cause we was like, ‘Fuck that shit!’”
“We would write verses until we proved a point,” Senim Silla added. “That’s all you were trying to do. I would rap until I made my point and then the verse was over. We didn’t look at it like we needed so many verses in a song or we had to have a hook.”
The duo also spoke on several of the tracks featured on Masters Of The Universe including the first song on the album, “Reality Check.”
As far as “Reality Check” is concerned One Be Lo revealed that he ditched his first verse for the song after hearing Senim Silla’s.
“This is the crazy part about ‘Reality Check.’ His verse was so fucking bananas, I was looking at my verse and I was like, ‘There’s no way I can spit this shit,’” One Be Lo explained. “So I went back and rewrote my verse thinking, ‘There’s no fuckin’ way I can rap with this dude.’”
