Billie Eilish Says There’s A Lot Of Lying Going On In Rap

Pop singer Billie Eilish is facing criticism for some comments she made during an recent interview with Vogue.

The cover story, which was published on Monday (February 3), found the Grammy Award-winning singer commenting on the difference between storytelling and straight up lying, which she said often happens in rap. She asserted a lot of rappers aren’t telling the truth in their rhymes.

“Just because the story isn’t real doesn’t mean it can’t be important,” she said. “There’s a difference between lying in a song and writing a story. There are tons of songs where people are just lying. There’s a lot of that in rap right now, from people that I know who rap.

“It’s like, ‘I got my AK-47, and I’m fuckin’,’ and I’m like, what? You don’t have a gun. ‘And all my bitches …’ I’m like, which bitches? That’s posturing, and that’s not what I’m doing.”

Unsurprisingly, Twitter weighed in and cracked a few jokes at Eilish’s expense.

Elsewhere in the interview, Eilish opened up about her friendship with Drake. Last fall, she revealed the 33-year-old superstar had been texting her, which didn’t sit well with some people considering Eilish was a minor at the time.

“The internet is such a stupid-ass mess right now,” she said. “Everybody’s so sensitive. A grown man can’t be a fan of an artist? There are so many people that the internet should be more worried about. Like, you’re really going to say that Drake is creepy because he’s a fan of mine, and then you’re going to go vote for Trump? What the fuck is that shit?”

    1. I mean, she’s not wrong…The amount of artists out there who brag that they’re killers and this that and the other. It’s fine to story tell for entertainment purposes, but when you’re trying to be bragadocious and believe the lies you’re telling (*cough* Rick Ross *cough*) then its flat out embarrassing. Those Twitter replies are flat out embarrassing too, just because they don’t like what she has to say on the subject matter?

    2. I agree with her and I don’t like her music at all. A lot of rappers are lying all of the time. To the point where it becomes an exaggerated or completely altered form of themselves that is made to look real. Look at Drake or Rick Ross. Never once are they talking about the character they act out in their music in an interview. Never once are they out of character. At least actors or wrestlers can sit in an interview and discuss their characters and be themselves in real life. Drake and Rick Ross completely scrapped their whole entire life’s story to be somebody they’re not and never once leave it in the public eye. Lol it’s pretty embarrassing and sad and a lot of rappers do it haha.

      1. I totally agree with what you’re saying about Officer Ricky, that guy never breaks character but I don’t see it with Drake.

        1. agreed with truth. drakes not as a good of an example as ricky but still gets the point across.. drake refuses to use his actual accent he grew up with, acts tough when he clearly isnt, claims he started from the bottom when he is from a nice neighborhood, and has a ghostwriter. he is DEFINITELY a character and a shell of his real self in the public eye more than your average rapper. imagine faking your accent in the music business and acting like its your actual accent at all times. ive never seen drake acknowledge any of this. its the same thing as ricky, just not as much

    3. She isn’t wrong at all and it’s the defense most rappers use when their lyrics are scrutinised. What’s the issue? Or is it the usual thing where any element of black culture isn’t allowed to analysed by anyone of another race, no matter how true?

    4. She’s not wrong. It’s not even that she’s criticizing hip hop. She says, ‘Just because the story isn’t real, doesn’t mean it can’t be important.’

    5. She’s wrong because that is hip hop at it’s core. It’s not about lying vs truth is Bigger is Better as long as you are portraying yourself in the sense of this is what my vision for myself is. This is how we do it where I’m from… there is no lie. and as far as the b**tch’s comment… Well the only way to get women is to have other women and lie about the relationship.. so.. when in Rome.

Why??? because well women are strange and like someone in action not on the sideline looking for love. they almost seem to prefer you literally hop out of bed with one to jump into theirs. No don’t bother asking them if what I said is true because they will lie and make it sound super believable. Just let them answer with your eyes. Remember the fool from highschool who thought he was a ladies man and got 2 girls preggo at the same time?? what a LOSER right??!!!! Well he is now onto his 8th babymama… how can that be??? see above

      1. She’s not wrong at all. She’s calling out those who try and brag about being gangsters in all their music when we all know they’re fronting. It’s distinguishable to an actor like De Niro playing the part of a gangster in a lot of his films because music is a personal medium, written by the artists (for the main part) So when you have rappers who are forever bragging about slinging dope or shooting people and being a killer when the reality is that they’re by and large law abiding citizens then it’s flat out embarrassing. Biggest example of someone pretending he’s not is Officer Ricky.

      1. The only dumb bitch here is you. Hilarious that you’ve taken her comment as a personal attack when you’re too damn stupid to see she’s talking the truth here.

    6. Thanks for your opinion but I doubt the culture need it..why are suburban babies commenting on a culture they don’t even understand. I’m sure her lying ass rap friends aren’t from anywhere that relates to rap culture. Next time she should name drop instead of coming at a culture as a whole as if she knows real gang bangers. The opinion of a kid who doesn’t know shit about a culture will differ from someone who’s actually from the trenches …perspective is everything.

      1. Hiphop cultures literal target audience is white suburban people. Do you understand that it’s soemthing called BUSINESS? And cmon man, culture ushe doesn’t understand? Just admit it, most of mainstream hiphop “culture” is called being a phony studio gangster scumbag. Mainstream hiphop is trash right now. Good hiphop is not with studio gangsters anymore, it’s with intellectuals, who have brains.

        1. Hip-hop culture literal target isn’t suburban ..suburban kids actually think gangster shit is cool. While a few rappers do pose but the target audience isn’t suburban ..what suburban kid you know actually relate to the struggle if anything the suburban audience are even bigger posers. Your opinion of good hip-hop is subjective ..I appreciate intellectual but I also appreciate someone who knows pain and came from something real and is able to articulate that pain..and that business talk is dead a rapper can stay true to their core and attract fans that resonate with their music.

        3. People from the suburbs are fake and listen 2 gangster rap to feel like theyre down. I can tell u one of those.. prob white boy used 2 wear braids in the day

    7. Yeah yeah good points but drake still be looking like he can’t wait to spend some time with his girl as half term is coming up tho.

    8. Being behind the scenes in hip hop for 15 years let me be the first to say, 10% of ‘rappers’ who make it to mainstream status are not who the depict to be. That’s all I’ll say.

    9. Rap and corporations are killing hip hop, ON PURPOSE. Rap is a virus that kills every thing it touches. Rappers today will do anything to be on the radio including pocketbooks, dresses, skinny jeans and men kissing men. They have ghostwriters that make the artists sound like a so called goat by telling lies.. What the fuck! They have no talent, style or identify of their own. Here today. Gone today. Hip hop is about beats, rhymes and life. We had our own lanes and nobody copy it or you were a biter. In other words, we have talent. Put hip hop back the radio and kill the virus called rap.

    10. If that the True why is it then every rapper these day get convicted on what the say on their records, so the government lying on niggas again.
