Big Daddy Kane’s Former DJ Mister Cee Explains Why He Wasn’t At KRS-One Verzuz As Rumors Swirl

The Big Daddy Kane and KRS-One Verzuz event went down on Sunday night (October 17) at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, bringing together two Hip Hop titans for a night of camaraderie and, of course, classic joints. A number of special guests popped up throughout the event, including Das EFX, Kool DJ Red Alert, Roxanne Shanté, DJ Cutmaster Cool V and Masta Ace.

But some Hip Hop fans took notice Big Daddy Kane’s former DJ, Mister Cee, was nowhere to be found. As comments poured in on social media, the Brooklyn native addressed the chatter on Instagram.

“FOR THE RECORD I’M NOT SICK & THERE’S NO BEEF!!!” he wrote in all caps. “I JUST WASN’T ASKED TO DO IT!!! EVERY MAN HAS A RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHO HE WANTS TO CHOOSE!!! GOODNITE!!!”

A veteran radio host, Mister Cee’s relationship with Big Daddy Kane stretches back to high school. As both started to pursue Hip Hop, he wound up being the DJ behind Big Daddy Kane’s 1988 debut, Long Live The Kane. He was also associate executive producer for The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1994 debut, Ready To Die.

Kane and Mister Cee have kept in touch over the years and were photographed together as recently as September 4. But for whatever reason, Big Daddy Kane decided to ask DJ Scratch to helm the decks for the Verzuz event. The duo kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Just Rhymin” featuring the late Biz Markie.

KRS-One countered with the Boogie Down Production cut “I’m Still No. 1,” and the battle had officially begun. While there were plenty of famous faces in the crowd — including Busta Rhymes, Verzuz co-founder Swizz Beatz and Fat Joe — there were even more in the Verzuz Instagram comment section.

Diddy, Russell Simmons, Funk Flex, Tyrese, Jermaine Dupri, Missy Elliott, Lord Finesse, Common, Pusha T, DJ Khaled, J.J. Fad, Teddy Riley, The Alchemist, D-Nice, Killer Mike, Run-DMC’s Rev Run, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Royce Da 5’9, Lil Kim, Doug E. Fresh and Cypress Hill’s B-Real were among the 100,000-plus viewers who came to represent.

        1. KRS has dope tracks but he was winded and looked exhausted most of the night. Kane had incredible breath play and had excellent showmanship. Kane won hands down.

    1. KRS One was more-so on a level of let’s do it like we did it in the hood, not this other “arranged” type of stuff. Kane had his planned out a little more. I loved the moment because this was a REAL versuz

    2. ☝Salute Legend CRAIG G. He was on stage with Ace & Kane doing the ” Symphony “. Craig & Ace Very underrated _ check the catelouge.

    3. Because Big Daddy Kane stopped fucking with him way back in the 90s when he found out what he was on. Everybody knows this. He then started running with zesty Bad Boy.

        1. Krs one got hits fo sho but was performing like he was exhausted. I go to a show I expect the artists to perform their hits not me. I’m only there to rap along.

    4. It’s pretty obvious why “The Finisher” wasn’t there. He lost all respect for all the gay tranny shit he was hiding all those years

      1. If that was the case nobody should be discriminating or judging anyones extra activities In 2021. If you are a man who is secure with himself. Peoples sexuality shouldn’t be an issue grow up people and get prepared for the real judgment god himself

    5. Kane is the truth, but ain’t too many fucking with KRS One on the mike. He’ll eat your favorite MC and spit him out even at this age.

    6. If that’s the case what about Kool G Rap declined to be there…. another 1 is DJ Marely Marl since part of the juice crew was there…. it was a win win for hip hop and both sides opened the book for this generation of hip hop… on the flip side DNice wasn’t there for BDP…

    7. I would have loved to see a Kane vs LL battle. Battle of the ladies men. but during the Verzuz they was asking who should Busta Rhymes battle and the only person with that type of s catalog is LL Cool J…. it would definitely be a good Verzuz The Goat vs Bussa Buss
