Apple is reestablishing its Beats Music application to take on Spotify and other music streaming companies, the New York Times reports.
Its been nearly a year since Apple acquired Beats by Dre for $3 billion.
The consumer electronic giant has reportedly enlisted Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor to redesign the application, along with a team of Apple and Beats employees – including co-founder Jimmy Iovine.
According to the Times, Apple recently attempted to persuade record labels to lower licensing costs, so that they could sell subscriptions to its updated streaming service for $8 a month, while companies like Spotify and Rhapsody charge $10. The record labels did not agree to Apple’s request.
An Apple employee also told The Times, the new application will feature “many of the same characteristics as the Beats Music streaming service.”
For now, the name will remain the same but the complete overhaul could mean the Beats Music moniker will be discarded.
In addition to launching a reinvigorated version of Beats Music, Apple is allegedly planning to enhance its iTunes Radio services, as well. Recently hired radio host, Zane Lowe, is expected to steer that project.
At the end of day neither service pays artist who have music up there enough.
Realistically only the top 1% (if that) of artists get affected. The ones selling hundreds of thousands or even millions of records. The rest of the small indie artists reach more markets with streaming services than they would without.
And in the case of not paying enough, while I’d like to see the streaming sites up their royalties, it’s really the record labels who are taking a huge cut. It’s been the labels for decades screwing artists over but the labels are slick and make the public blame pirating, streaming sites, and whatever else to take the heat of them.
if what u typed was 100 then they woulda purchased Datpiff, not BeatsMusic. All these years and Datpiff still ain’t crank out no multi-plat artists and this info says y’all being severely mindfu**ed and still can’t see how heavily the game is rigged.
