Angel Haze had a breakout year in 2012, signing to Universal Republic on the strength of her breakout mixtape Reservation and releasing a follow up Classick.
Kicking off the New Year, the Detroit-raised rapstress has ranked third on BBC’s Sound of 2013 list that also featured The Weeknd, AlunaGeorge, Savages and more.
Speaking with BBC, Angel recalled her religious upbringing, explaining that she was part of a church that can only be described as a “cult.”
“I grew up in a really strict church,” she said. “It was considered a sin to listen to music. I was totally aware of it. I wanted to be into it, but I wasn’t allowed to. And I was actually in a cult. I don’t like to describe it that way too much because the word ‘cult’ just sounds crazy. It was that, but… it was cool. It really altered the way I think and perceive things.”
She also touched on her upcoming debut album and hopes to work with The Weeknd, Frank Ocean and Jason Mraz. “I want people to know that anything is possible,” she says. “That you can come from anywhere in the world, come from the dirtiest of places and go beyond that. There’s nothing that you can’t accomplish. Nothing can stop you.”
