Angel Haze: “Being Gay In Hip Hop Is Still Really Stigmatized”

Angel Haze recently addressed the perception of people who are gay within Hip Hop.

“Being gay in Hip Hop is still really stigmatized,” Haze says in an interview with XXL. “There are so many people in this world that are closet homosexuals. I guess I’m ‘out,’ but people ask me what my sexuality is all the time and I always tell them that it doesn’t matter. You don’t deserve to go through that and you don’t have to let that define who you are.”

Haze says she was “reluctant to do ‘Same Love,’” a cut about her sexuality that was released in 2013.

“I was so reluctant to do ‘Same Love,’ because I get so caught up on people thinking of me as a queer rapper, I don’t discuss my sexuality in my music,” Haze says. “But I’ve always said to myself that an artist is a person who has something to say and isn’t just a part of the noise. Adele is one of those artists for me. So are Frank Ocean and J. Cole, people who have something genuine to say and won’t just add to the room full of chatter.”

Haze’s “Same Love,” patterned after Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ song of the same name, features lyrics about the rapper’s upbringing and sexual preference. “At age thirteen, my mom knew I wasn’t straight,” she raps on the track. “She didn’t understand, but she had so much to say / She sat me on the couch, looked me straight in my face / And said you’ll burn in hell or probably die of AIDS.”

    1. How come Hip-Hop is the only genre getting this gay agenda shoved down its throat?? ‘Still highly stigmatized’ its highly stigmatized & frowned upon everywhere! Stop trying to single out Hip-Hop & make a big deal out of nothing!

I disagree. Hip-hop is one of the most homophobic genres despite doing some of the most suspect things like wearing skirts and kissing guys on the mouth.

    2. We don’t need faggots ruining hip hop
This bitch hurt in the face anyway, she basically had no choice but to be gay

      1. satans warriors… LOL you are delusional.

i would rather have a child in a stable “gay” household than move around in foster care for life.

    3. The only real problem I have with Angel Haze is that she does nothing but extremely complex lyrics… She’s technically good, just not particularly intonative.

    4. She’s completely right when it comes to the main statement though. We need more talented LGBT rappers (queercore shouldn’t exist as a separate genre – not even because it’s bad, but because it implies separation).

    5. Normal people have no problem with gay women like Angel; the concept 99% of the world’s population find baffling is two men finding each other sexually appealing. I’m cool with anyone, and I appreciate gays can’t help how their brains are wired, but sex with a dude is something most sane people could never contemplate, just like most normal people would never use a needle to inject poison into their veins, but hey, to each his own.

    6. My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My neighbour’s sister has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can’t believe how easy it was once I tried it out.
