HoodHype recently caught up with veteran underground producer 9th Wonder while attending October’s A3C Festival in Atlanta, GA. During the interview, 9th talked about his upcoming projects with his own imprint Jamla Records. 9th said that he’s going to focus on promoting his line-up of artists and ensuring that they achieve a greater level of success.
“It’s all about my label [Jamla Records] now,” he explained. “I want to be promoting them and [helping] them mak[e] it – whatever you call ‘making it.’ [I want them to] be successful, at least to be paid out here, and that’s what’s important, man. That’s what I want for them.”
9th also talked about the documentary that one University of North Carolina student earning his Master’s degree made about him, titled The Wonder Year. He explained that the filming took a year to complete and that the film is more than just twelve months in his shoes.
“The movie [The Wonder Year] is directed by my brother Kenneth Price, my brother from another mother and color,” he said. “He was getting his Master’s at UNC Greensboro, and for his Master’s thesis, he wanted to do a year-long documentary on me. When I watched [the first cut of it], I told him I hope you’re ready for what you have created because this is bigger than just you getting your piece of paper saying that you got your Master’s…it’s bigger than Hip Hop.”

Thank you God for giving me the ability to listen to music objectively, despite how big or respected the producer is, regardless of cult following…Lemme tell yall something, I am not a follower, never will be, if something is dope, cool, if not, then cool, but I don’t follow. I just checked it out Wonder Years.
Wonder Years as a whole is not for me. I can rock with a few Little Brother throwback tracks. I understand expansion/experimentation in music, but its not for me. It has nothing to do with samples vs. keys, cause I bumps Pete Rock, DJ Premier etc As an avid instrumental fan, I want to be SCARED when I hear something, like when I heard Wu Tang Forever.
It has nothing to with the STYLE of production, the producer being humble, subject matter, NOTHING. Its the FEELING for me. U can KILL 50 people in a song as long as it bangs.
I bought the Wonder years I didnt like it. In my opinion it seems like 9th is trying to appeal to too many people. the songs wouldve been better if they were on the artist individual album. it like you go from hearing Big Remo and Raekwon spitting ether then you have Marsha Ambroysius? Again and I can b wrong in my opinion 9th is dope when he does complete albums and molds things completely to their style Example: him and murs make magic, Buckshot, David Banner and little Brother. I think if he wants to do another collaborative album he should maybe make 10 dope songs that all flow together sonically and grab artist that fits particularly what he’s trying to do.
