Jamaica, Queens rapper 50 Cent continued to discuss music, business, relationships, and more in the third part of his hour-long interview with SXSW. In this latest installment, the emcee turned businessman talked album sales and music awards and pondered why the two don’t add up for him personally.
50 Cent even concluded his brief remarks on album sales and his “trophy case” with a comment in regards to fellow artist Kanye West and shared that he’d rather “get the check” and leave the trophies to the G.O.O.D. Music rapper.
“Within music culture for you to be connected to a company or corporation meant you wasn’t being an artist…That wasn’t even supposed to happen,” said 50 Cent while speaking on his Vitaminwater deal. “When you watch the awards shows you’ll notice cause my trophy case don’t match the sales. But hey, Kanye get the trophies. I’ll get the check.”
The G-Unit founder later touched on his close relationship with professional boxer Floyd Mayweather who he referred to as a brother.
“He’s like my brother. I don’t have relationships that I value friendships like that. So, we’ll flip flop whatever it is, but it is what it is,” Fifty explained. “At the end of the day he was going through a lot of confusion that [I] experienced. Floyd doesn’t like to be by himself. He takes care of people, he pays people to keep them around him…It’s not the first time I ran into someone who finds their happiness through their circle.”
During his interview series with SXSW, 50 Cent has gone on to discuss the inability to top past album sales, Nas being “one of the great storytellers within Hip Hop,” and more.

Awards are give to people who strive for excellence. 50 ain’t put his heart into his music since GRODT Kanye does on every song.
Well to 50’s statement about his trophy case, I think it’s a really simple answer. He had one of the most successful albums in Hip-Hop history with GRODT, but understand that awards like the Grammy’s aren’t quick to celebrate a rapper who swears profusely and appears to promote violence. I’m not saying I care like the award shows do, but they think about these kinds of things.
And let’s mention the biggest problem with 50’s music career. Sustained Success. He was at the top of the mountain and has only been going down ever since while Jay Z has never missed a platinum target. Kanye’s albums are always critically acclaimed and he bounced back after his VMA controversy with the Album of the year (all genre’s), their success can be looked at over many years.
The whole G-Unit thing also didn’t help, their sales were not all that good and by that time it wasn’t anything new in terms of music.
Everyone’s seen it really and 50 accepts the fact from time to time with statements like “I’ll get the cheque’s”. He’s become a business man and doesn’t approach his albums with nearly enough hunger as he did with GRODT, but that’s not even the main reason why 50’s fallen so far. The main reason is his inability to evolve as an artist when the sound he was producing turned stale to the mainstream listeners. We were all bopping at first, but then it got old, quick. But that’s fine, 50 had his Hip-Hop shine and he should get over it and stop looking back, he’s a rapper through and through and not an artist.
