50 Cent has shared his thoughts on Michael Rainey Jr.’s confession that he was blindsided by Power Book II being canceled.
It was announced on Thursday (March 14) that the STARZ series would be coming to an end after the fourth season and will be broken into two parts, premiering on June 7 and September 6, respectively.
After the news emerged, the show’s lead actor Rainey Jr. (who portrays the character Tariq St. Patrick) revealed he had no idea the series was coming to a close.
“Don’t ask me nothing idk what’s goin on in them offices lmao they trippin,” he told his 3.2 millions followers on his Instagram Stories. “Final season otw tho I guess.”
He also shared an X post from a staff writer who stated he was shocked by the news after recently receiving praise from those in charge.
“Ain’t hear from STARZ or Lionsgate once about the show trajectory,” the writer said. “Literally sat in their faces last month with a pitch and all I kept hearing is how much they adored the work done on Ghost. Adored it so much that they didn’t bother to tell anybody on staff we got canned.”
Michael Rainey Jr. added: “My fellow writer said it best. We knew but not the way we should’ve.”
50 Cent came across a TMZ article about Rainey Jr.’s comments and offered a simple explanation for his ignorance.
“Yeah because @michaelraineyjr don’t answer his phone [shrug emoji],” he wrote on Instagram.
50 Cent’s Power sequel and spin-off series Power Book II: Ghost premiered in September 2020 on STARZ, starring the likes of Method Man and Mary J. Blige.
But this week, STARZ CEO Jeffrey Hirsch revealed plans to save money by creating more new shows instead of sustaining the original series.
“You look at the [Power] map and say, ‘Okay, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost,’” he told Deadline.
“Now I’m putting a lot of money right to the bottom line. And I’m really not losing anything in terms of acquisition costs and subscriber viewership, because we know what those demos want. And we know how to line those up.”
He added: “And so that’s really the core of getting to that 20 percent [margin] — turning that slate over with fresh content to drive the business.”
This was the weakest installment of them all. It shouldn’t have even been called ghost.
If the show was that weak then how could the ratings and viewership increase each season…Shows don’t normally get canceled if it continues to draw viewers..ie, The Sopranos, The Walking Dead, Cheers.. Production costs increased each season but it stayed on..
I believe it was cancelled to pay (Ghost) Omari Hardwick the salary requested. Because he’s coming back to the Power Universe it cancels out Tariq’s show by default. They probably would like him to join the new cast. We shall see, it’s up to him if he wants to stay or not though. It’s the only explanation that makes sense.
It’s better than Force
No it’s not. Tommy is 10 times more believable as a drug dealer and boss. Tariq is to soft to be a boss. The tejada family is overated as well only cain is a real killer on the show everyone else is soft I can’t really even play the part of being drug dealers and gangsters. Ghost is a teenager kid show. It doesn’t carry the weight of the original power. Force is way more realistic to the street life that Tommy lives and portrays and travels way better than childish as Ghost. I’m glad it’s over Tariq can’t carry a show like Tommy or Ghost could straight facts.
Yeah but who believes Tommy went to Chicago with no body guards and start taking over turns like that..all by himself…over all the black and Irish gangs..please “
dont believe one of them could move a nickle bag at a middle school it was hilariously unrealistic
Ghost 2 is a kid show doesn’t carry any real weight of the real power universe I’m glad it’s getting canceled let’s move on to something more realistic.
That’s what he gets for killing his dad!
Sounds like a Hater to me
😆😂😂😂😂
The only reason powerbook 2 got to 4 seasons because of Mary j and method man the show was garbage
@N/A that was hilarious 😂…. That’s what he gets for killing his own father 😆 I don’t think N/A meant anything but what he said…. not talking directly about the show ending but from a fan of the show and the actual shows “story”. Trust I’m pissed too….. I just watched RAISING TARIQ lmao the movie is called LOVE with Common and Meagan Good 😂😭😆
It’s too much violence in the world and people are losing love ones to keep portraying all this. Drugs killing people. It’s time up for the negativity on TV. Let’s teach people something to be better….more educational. But foolishness sells and entertains us. So sad. Let’s do better black people.
Violence has been entertainment since the days of the Romans. The show that will promote positive energy won’t last. Conflict brings in viewers which equals money. The corporations will always follow the money.
You’re right about violence always being entertainment since the Roman’s.. But to Kay’s point just because they were barbaric, does that mean we have to continue to be. What ever happened to evolution, and we should be able to evolve from violence.
I prefer Raising Kanan. Raq and her brothers are some dope characters. Unique is cool too.
It wasnt a good show jus a pg13 version of degrassi
THAT LIL FUCK KILLED GHOST!! HE WILL NEVER BE LIKED OR FORGIVEN
FOR THAT!
Well Curtis I think all your shows are and was great. Keep doing what you do.
Agreed ‼️‼️‼️
You all are tripping. As long as Tyrone keeps moving weight, the show must go on. It’s been a minute or two since that show be on. That show be moving the weight.
We as adults need to realize reality and reality is that it’s jus a show we know these people are entertainers. The thought of “promoting violence” is elementary at this point because we all know right from wrong. A peaceful show won’t stop violence just like a violent show doesn’t create it. You dnt have to watch it to even complain. Micheal Rainey Jr did a great job and he’s phenomenal actor as well as everyone else in the cast.
The idea that u believe Michael Rainey is a good actor speaks volumes on your insight, and how you view reality.
I agree! I loved the show and it wasn’t about just being a killer… his thought process and creativity to make things happen as was the original ghost is what made Michael and Omari so entertaining. I would take Ghost II over Raising Kanan any day, and if I had to choose, Force would be off the table too… I definitely don’t want to see Ghost II go…. I’m quite upset by this decision. I really don’t have a need for Starz after this season.
The creator of the Show original idea was for tyrik to get the torch from the beginning. I see from a business standpoint why their doing it, they basically saying the audience is fickle and they’ll watch a new spin off which is half the cost 😂 kind of a diss if you ask me. Far as the commenters that say they want a more realistic feel, come on now, since the beginning with the original power them boys was doing things unrealistic. Following old blueprint since Kanan is successful let’s just do it with Ghost and Tommy.
Ever heard the saying “if it’s not broken don’t fix it”? I have been a fan of the show since 2014, with that being said, Tarique and Mary J , were outstanding as were the rest of the crew! Raising Kanan is a. disappointment at best! Shame on you!

Times up motherfucker..
😎
This was the worse out of all the installments; it was juvenile, unrealistic and deplorable. The acting sucked, and I never liked the unresolved way they let Tariq get away with killing his father then somehow expect us to root for his success in the sequel. I kept watching only hoping he would die or go to jail- but cancellation is good enough for me! 😏
