Republican Congressman Doug Lamborn recently made controversial comments regarding President Barack Obama, branding him a “tar baby” while discussing the debt ceiling debate. Though he later apologized for using the racial epithet, rapper 50 Cent has taken his Twitter podium to denounce Lamborn, ranting that the Colorado representative should be removed from office.

Lamborn first made the comments during an interview with a Denver radio show, saying, “I don’t even want to have to be associated with him. It’s like touching a ‘tar baby.'” Since then, he sent an apology letter to the president and released a statement of apology to the public.

Tar baby, like some other now racist terms, had a legitimate meaning before being twisted into something hateful. It was originally a term for getting stuck in a literal sticky situation that you can’t get out of, no matter how hard you try. It has since been used as a derogatory term for African Americans. I have yet to see a full transcript of this particular usage of the term so I can’t comment on it but it will be labeled as racist no matter which way he meant it to mean. Somehow John Kerry’s usage of the term in defending Obama was interpreted as racist…
