2015 MTV Video Music Awards Recap: Nicki Minaj, Kanye West & Kendrick Lamar

The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards definitely had its memorable moments. Of course, social media had its say especially after some crazy things went down.

Nicki Minaj began the night with a performance of “Trini Dem Girls” and was then joined on stage by Taylor Swift for a rendition of “The Night is Still Young.”

The first shenanigans of the night began with Nicki though. While accepting her award for Best Hip Hop Video, the Queens rapper called out Miley Cyrus for her recent comments in a New York Times interview in which Cyrus said Nicki blamed others for being shut out of the Video of the Year category.

“You know who I want to thank tonight? My pastor,” Minaj said. “I love you so much. And now, back to this bitch that had a lot to say about me in the press. Miley what’s good?”

Kendrick Lamar, who is notorious for being snubbed at award shows, lost to Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” for Video of the Year toward the middle of the show. He did win with Swift however for his appearance in “Bad Blood.”

Perhaps the highlight of the night was Kanye West’s speech he gave after winning the 2015 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. During the over 13-minute talk with audience members and television viewers, ‘Ye ended by announcing he was running for President of the United States in 2020.

“I don’t know what I’m finna lose after this it don’t matter though because it ain’t about me, it’s about new ideas bro people with ideas people who believe in truth,” he said. “And yes, as you probably could’ve guessed by this moment I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

Prior to West’s win and speech was a hatchet burying of sorts. Taylor Swift, who presented the award to Kanye, said West’s debut album, College Dropout was the first one she had ever downloaded from iTunes and forgave him for his infamous 2009 VMA mic jacking and subsequent rant about how Beyonce should’ve won the award for Video of the Year.

College Dropout was the very first album that my brother and I bought on iTunes when I was 12 years old,” she said. “I have been a fan of his, since I can remember, because Kanye defines what is to be a creative force in music, fashion and, well, life. So, I guess I have to say to all the other winners tonight: I’m really happy for you, and I’mma let you finish, but Kanye West has had one of the greatest careers of all time!”

Toward the end of the VMAs, Fetty Wap won the award for Artist to Watch. The New Jersey native recently set Billboard Hot 100 history becoming the first rap artist to have his first four singles grace the chart’s top 10.

The 32nd MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles and hosted by Miley Cyrus.
