On his much-hyped, Kanye West-produced album Nasir, the immortally dope Nas discusses a wide-range of current events. One of these newsworthy topics is the anti-vaxx movement, a highly controversial group who strongly oppose immunization vaccinations for children. He raps on The-Dream accented “Everything”:

Though this stance may seem random, especially for a Hip Hop dude, Nas has gestured towards being an anti-vaxxer before.
On his comeback album, 2001’s Stillmatic, he’s even more blunt on the song “What Goes Around” with the line, “Doctors injectin’ our infants with the poison.”
What are the origins of this bizarre movement Nas has repeatedly aligned with? And why are so many celebrities drawn to it?
The anti-vaxx movement is actually younger than Nas’s career. In 1998, a medical journal published a study by physician Andrew Wakefield that connected the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine to autism. Despite being widely disputed, the study gained international attention and spiraled into a movement. Immunization vaccines have been credited with reducing measles and other diseases and lowering the global infant mortality rate. On top of that, there hasn’t been any evidence proving they aren’t safe. But anti-vaxxers — like many conspiracy theorists — don’t necessarily care about facts. They claim that the numerous chemicals in the vaccines and the large number of vaccines given are harmful and have aligned themselves with a broader movement to make child products more organic. When confronted with scientific evidence, they claim that organizations like the Centers for Disease Control are in bed with pharmaceutical corporations and hence can’t be counted on.
Unfortunately, Nas isn’t the only celebrity who has used his platform to spout this nonsense. Actors like Jim Carrey and Robert De Niro have all helped spread the conspiracy. In addition, the anti-vaxx movement has also been embraced by Scientologist celebrities like Kirstie Alley. Even Donald J. Trump has spread anti-vaxx myths to his followers.
It’s no secret that celebrities and wealthy people tend to embrace New Age philosophies and pseudoscience. But in this particular case, the stakes are incredibly high. According to a 2017 study conducted by Stanford University, “A 5 percent drop in the number of children ages 2 to 11 inoculated against measles, mumps and rubella would triple the number of annual measles cases in this age group.” Even if a fraction of these celebrities’ fans believe their wacky lies, it could have a serious impact on the general population’s health.
In 2015, California Governor Jerry Brown took a stand against the movement when he signed a bill requiring parents to vaccinate their children.
In response, Jim Carrey called him a “corporate fascist.”

Thank you writing this editorial. The anti-vaxxer movement is one of the most dangerous and irresponsible campaigns in recent American history. Those lines fuck up the Nas track for me too. It’s more than just an eye-rolling thing for me so I appreciate the editorial about it HHDX. People need to be informed about the dangers of not vaccinating their children, not only for their own kid’s health, but for the health of others in their community. Like all the measles outbreaks recently: these outbreaks are the *direct fault* of misinformed parents who did not vaccinate their damn children.

The only question would be why anyone would want to deny that information to parents.

He made note that his young, fully vaccinated patients, have an unusually high incidence of GI issues, and suggests more research on this issue. That’s it. Read it if you really want to know for yourself. While you’re at it read the minutes from the Simpsonwood conference held in 2001. It was a meeting of the most expert vaccine researchers and scientists and CDC and big Pharma reps. They tried and tried to spin the data to prove no connection between vaccines and autism, to no avail. You say vaccines improve mortality rate? The USA has one of the highest vaccination rates and also one of the highest infant mortality rates of industrialized nations. These are all easily checked facts. The CDC owns a number of patents for vaccines so has a huge conflict of interest when recommending up to 70 shots in the first 18 years of life. And there is a ton of evidence that vaccines are dangerous and not well tested. Simply read any vaccine insert. Not the happy sheet the doctors hand out, the actual insert. Vaccine science should never be final. As we learn more and more about the effects of these toxic cocktails injected into our bodies we should always be given the choice. You clowns are missing the point. People understand the importance of protection against the diseases vaccinations help fight. The point is though that there are links between vaccinations and problems in kids but it’s all swept under the carpet. They act like there is no risk associated with it and no side effects at all when there can be.

Maybe he read the official #CDCwhistleblower documents in which the CDC destroyed data showing boys of color were at higher risk for autism after MMR, and he understands through history thinks such as Tuskegee might still be happening. Also, your story is false regarding Dr. Wakefield. His study specifically stated his finding measles virus in the guts of children with autism did not prove causality, and encouraged further investigation, along with offering separate M-M-R vaccines. Don’t believe me, read the research. Great job on spreading false information.
Vaccines do not cause autism.
Autism is a behavioral diagnosis. In order to receive the diagnosis of “Autism” a child must exhibit a certain number of behaviors over a certain time frame. If he or she does not do so, the diagnosis of “autism” is not warranted.
There is no blood test for “autism.”
“Autism” can’t be confirmed or “ruled-out” by laboratory analysis. It’s strictly a behavioral diagnosis.
Therefore, anything that causes physiological damage cannot directly “cause” autism.
Ergo… vaccines cannot “cause” “autism.”

Dr. Wakefield NEVER said vaccines cause autism.
Dr. Wakefield is a gastroenterologist. He saw a number of children with gastrointestinal problems who also happened to be diagnosed with autism. Dr. Wakefield reported his observations. He never claimed that the MMR “caused” autism. He merely reported that a number of children he had seen had BOTH gastrointestinal problems AND autism, and according to parental report, these issues developed within a short time of when the children received the MMR vaccine.
Again… Why is Dr. Wakefield such a threat to the pharmaceutical industry?
Hint: Not because vaccines cause autism – they don’t.

Malabsorption of essential nutrients causes immune system disorders, seizures, encephalopathy, etc… and THAT’s what leads to the ultimate diagnosis of “autism.”
If Dr. Wakefield’s observations are correct, SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE will eventually draw the connection between vaccines and the domino-effect that leads to the “autism” diagnosis. From the perspective of the pharmaceutical industry, better to “nip it in the bud” now, which means discrediting Dr. Wakefield to the extent that no one will look further into the science.

Your story/facts are wrong.Dr wakefield had a study on gut bacteria whic has been reproven over and over like 15 times and lately this year by USC. His study was also requested to be put back in the study magazine but the journal refused despite judge saying so. The most educated don’t vax. There’s something to learn there. And yes.. the CDC literally proved vaccines can cause autism but they chose to hide that. News is helping the trillionaire business keep making money. That’s right there were other scientists who conducted the study and also the countless other studies that confirmed a link between vaccinations and many other healthconcerned that NO ONE seems to be very concerned about!
