Snoop Dogg’s father has a lot more to his credit than parenting one of Hip Hop’s finest minds, and his contributions to society have now been recognized.
On Sunday (January 28), Vernell Varnado a.k.a. Papa Snoop attended the premiere of a documentary about his life. The screening took place in Maricopa, AZ, which is where producers Robert and Lucinda Boyd reside. The Detroit Mailman chronicles Varnado’s service to the United States during the Vietnam War as well as his two-and-a-half-decade career in Michigan’s Postal Service.
During the event, the city’s mayor presented the 74-year-old with a proclamation and challenge coin for the documentary. Additionally, the Boyds were also honored with Lifetime Achievement Award by the state’s Postal Service.
Snoop Dogg subsequently hopped on Instagram to commemorate Varnado on his accomplishment, writing: “Congrats. Pops.” Kurupt also expressed his admiration with: “UNC…. Congratulations from Tha Browns…. Poppa Snoop we luv u……”
Regarding parents receiving long-overdue recognition, the Long Beach native imparted some of his wisdom on Hit-Boy’s father before he dropped his debut album last month.
In early December, the superstar producer shared a social media a clip of Snoop on a phone call with Big Hit. In it, the Doggfather laid down some “rules and regulations” for his fellow O.G., who is launching a rap career after returning home this past spring from serving nine years in state prison for a hit-and-run.
“As a father, your job is to mentor and give him information where one day, your son can teach you,” he began. “You in a position now to be taught. That n-gga can teach you how to stay out, how to get money, how to be the dope-ass rapper that you are.”
The beatmaker reiterated this theme in his caption, writing: “This is the FIRST TIME ever in music you’ve seen a role reversal of this proportion. I’m helping my dad do something constructive with his time and giving him an outlet to express himself in a creative manner through music.”
He added: “We decided not to take any of the record deals we been offered since he got out 7 months ago for multiple reasons and the main reason is i’ve seen and been through too much to let my pops get caught up in these same systems i have no belief in. [W]hen you show love and support to this movement just know it’s all off the muscle. funded by us for yall.”
