Minnesota State Representative Maria Isa Pérez-Vega has dropped a new rap project after successfully being sworn into office.
Known creatively as Maria Isa, the Twin Cities rapper dropped off a new EP called Capitolio this week to dispel any rumors that she’d be abandoning her music career in the wake of her transition into politics.
“Of course I’m going to keep making my music — that’s where I get my energy,” Rep. Pérez-Vega, DFL-St. Paul, told The Star Tribune.
The eight-track project offers a playful fusion of Latin, Caribbean, reggaeton and Hip Hop, and even opens with an uplifting conversation with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
“I had been working on it from the first day I was running for the House, and it’s been a part of my campaign trail the whole way,” she added to the Tribune. “Music is medication, and we can certainly use that medication in politics right now.”
Listen to Capitolio below:
Maria Isa is far from the first rapper to link up with Senator Sanders. Killer Mike has remained an outspoken ally of his since the Vermont senator initially ran for president in 2016.
During his run in 2020, the Run The Jewels lyricist remained steadfast in his support for Sanders, and at one point was even accused by Twitter trolls of accepting money in exchange for his support.
“Keep it really real,” he fired back. “I accept NO MONEY from any politician. I am already rich.”
In another tweet, the Atlanta native said if he was an every day Black citizen in America and he knew Chuck D, Killer Mike and Boots Riley all supported Sanders, then there’s a good chance he’s the best candidate.
“If I’m a regular every day black person in America and @BootsRiley @MrChuckD & @KillerMike all agree on the same Presidential candidate Umma really have to consider that candidate because these three in music and real life action really give a damn,” he wrote. “#Sanders2020 #Vote.”
it’s actually pretty good! Call me pleasantly surprised.
I dislike Bernie after he completely simped and caved to the democrats when they stole hid nomination for president. Look it up. The DNCs system for choosing who represents their party in presidential elections is controlled. At the end of the day, the people do not choose with their votes, the DNC, a private organization does. The GOP doesn’t function this way (no super delegates) and the people’s votes alone decide who will be nominated to run on the GOP lime for president. When Bernie bowed to the corrupt system, it proved he isn’t about any actual fight. He’s just a puppet who was used to drum up millennial political involvement.
