Yesterday, it was announced that Lil Wayne had sold 964,000 copies of his latest, Tha Carter IV, in its first week. But some cried foul, speculating that the label purchased extra albums to try to push the album past the million sales mark.
During an interview with MTV News, Birdman refuted the rumors, claiming that buying extra copies of the LP is opposite of what the label stands for.
“Nah, man, that really don’t make no sense. Why would we do that?” he said. “I press and distribute ’em. Ain’t no need for me to buy ’em. That’s hustling backwards; we ain’t in it for that. I ain’t ever been a part of that type of scheme to be buyin’ records. We don’t do that, homey. We be working too hard to be — that don’t go with what we do. We truly what we do. We’re real about what we do, we work hard every day at it, and we work for the people. That’s what we do music for: for people. And we appreciate the love they give us back. But no such thing as me buying no CDs. I wouldn’t even play it like that.”
Baby did explain that the label makes about $10 per album sale, which would tally up direct revenue from the album to almost $10 million.

Not to say Weezy’s number would not have been big regardless, but lightening tends not to strike in the same place twice. I really doubted that dude did back to back platinum (well almost this time out) in less two and a half years and was wondering myself, how much of those albums Baby bought. If dude is bragging about buying million dollar cars, it would not be beyond him to try to make those numbers look good. Even ’em did not do close to 924k the first week out and we saw how well his album did. If the sales don’t follow through – say this album does less than 1.8 million in sales, then you know those first week numbers were bogus.

Universal wholesales the albums for 10.75. They don’t have $10 to give to Baby. And trust me, they find ways to lower the wholesale price with trick accounting. Back when labels sold actual records, there was a lot of breakage. So guess what’s standard in any contract til today, recording, distribution or otherwise, a discount for breakage that reduces the base figure by 20%. So baby is not even seeing 85% of 10.75.
One thing is for sure Baby has always been a hustla buyin records is hustlin backwards he has to pay to package and distribute so why would he buy back the same album that he just payed for think about it.

I don’t think they bought copies of the album, but I can see where one could view it as an investment.
Buy up 100,000 records (just throwing that number out there) and you’re out maybe 500,000 dollars ($15 record sale, but $10 of that goes to the label meaning $5 cost to them per record).
Paying $500,000 on the best that it would immediately push the album over the platinum mark might be worth it when you consider all of the extra attention paid to it, all the positive press, etc. People see it go platinum and think “oh I have to cop that, it must be hot if a million people bought it”.
On top of that, the bigger the album does, the more people are going to be looking to go drop even more $$$ when Wayne goes touring. More ticket sales and more merch revenue.
Again, don’t know (and don’t really care) if they did it, but it’s not as stupid of an idea as some want to paint it to be.

I’m sure the purchases of CDs are done by all record labels to boost the sale totals. The question is how many are purchased? For Baby to claim it is hustling backwards shows he is not that bright of a guy. If he receives $10 for every CD sold, he would just be recouping the funds he used to purchase the CDs. How much does a CD (or download cost) $10-$15? If there is a difference the money could be chalked up as advertisement because everyone will be talking about how many albums were sold giving “free publicity”. Another question that should be asked is how does Baby have a deal where he receives $10 per CD sold. That seems like a very high number and another one of his many lies.

If there’s no fraud involved (and I don’t think there is), there are only a few ways to explain the success of this mediocre album:
1. Back when most of the high-profile albums that came out were very good to classic, I would buy albums from certain artists as soon as they dropped cuz I knew they would be quality. Maybe a lot of fans bought this album based on Wayne’s previous work.
2. Lil’ Wayne has reached a level of popularity that transcends hip-hop (read: suburban white kids bought it to feel cool because they THINK all black people love his music.)
3. The old ass corporate executives have officially brainwashed the youth into accepting mediocre hip-hop as GREAT hip-hop.

it’s called “bulleting.” radio stations are paid to place certain songs in the top 200 or even the top 40 for a set period of time. the idea is that if people see the song there and hear it over and over (normally 2 weeks to a month) it’ll generate enough interest and staying power to actually be there after the paid time is over.
and sidenote: there’s absolutely no way the label makes $10 per album sold. it just doesn’t work like that. granted artists on majors make 3 cents per album if they’re lucky, but still, there are other middlemen and expenses that need to get paid. i just doesn’t happen. ever. if it did, birdman wouldn’t have to lie about owning 100 rolls royce’s or buying the miami dolphins.

I already did in an earlier reply. I also pointed out that if dude is lying about this, then he probably did buy a gang of albums to make those numbers look so good. No one ask how much he gets for each album, yet he mentioned it. Too much talking in certain situations, is a sign of lying. Jigga and Kanye did not even come close, Em’s album is pushing 3m units and I think he “only” did like 700k the first week. Weezy would have done good regardless, as I said earlier, but Cash Money bought some albums.
While Cash Money may “have one of the best distribution deals out there” and I don’t know what you are basing this off, they actually don’t have a deal that’s that special. What was great about their deal is that they got a whole bunch of money upfront and because Juvenile’s album (the first released under the deal) was so successful (4 million plus), they did the incredible and recouped off that first album and started collecting additional checks right away on other albums, instead of taking years to pay off the advance…but anyway, you have to think before you speak…. Universal wholesales its top line albums (I assume being such a big seller, Weezy’s are top sellers) for $10.50, then they take out 20% for pressing and distribution, then depending on whether they pay for videos and other marketing, that’s more of the top, how can CM make $10 an album. Simply not possible.
Birdman is a big liar, he knows him and universal bought coupies to make the album look hot, so real people run out and buy it in large numbers.

The woman is addressing a group of people in some sort of conference and she actually says that Lil Waynes albums in the past were bought by his own record label and then sold to another store/record shop to get more scans on the same exact item.

If you like bars metaphores & punch lines, listen to that album straight thru. It has plenty of them minus, the lollipop type shit.

first the fact that he addressed this issue speaks volumes because that means there is enough people out there saying it to give it meaning. Second the fact that he acts like it doesnt make sense to do is insane and he knows better because album sales is one of the numbers used when determining how much an artist can charge for performance and we all know that artist make more off shows then albums.
Lets look at it like this if he did buy lets say 500,000 copies of the album at wholesale cost that really only about 7.00 a pop so that 3.5mill and lets not forget lady gaga selling her album for .99 on amazon so who do you think covered the remaining balance. I dont know if he purchased them or not but to act like it doesnt make sense is just dumb. I will spend 3.5 milli if it enables me to charge 150k a show and bring in 42 milli just off of concerts alone. last point is trust me birdieman knows about show money because he dam sure was ripping off Juv back in the day.
