Public Enemy mastermind Chuck D has announced a new gallery show featuring original works in watercolor and ink. Titled “Artmageddon,” the show is being held at Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects Gallery in Los Angeles.
Fairey, who penned the foreword for Chuck’s This Day In Rap and Hip Hop History book, spoke about the Hip Hop luminary’s impact on the culture in a press release and is clearly thrilled to host Chuck’s work.
“Chuck D is a hero and a legend,” he said. “Not just to me but to many people who value the power of his music, his outspoken social and political voice and his positive influence on culture. I’m very excited to announce that our gallery Subliminal Projects will be opening an exhibition of Chuck’s artwork this January.
“His artwork provides a unique and vital point of view, and I’m always happy to celebrate his dynamic impact on the world. Thanks for the inspiration, Chuck!”
The admiration is mutual. Chuck is equally impressed with Fairey’s fingerprint on the art community.
“Like Hip Hop, visual art has the power to deliver a message with an explosive force,” Chuck said. “Shepard has created a space to remind us all that visual art has a voice, a place, an impact on the world we are living in. It insists that you think and makes you feel. I’m humbled to have my work hang on the walls of Subliminal Projects.”
“Artmageddon” opens on Saturday (January 12) at 7 p.m. PT and will run until January 26.

Hiphop purists support hiphop. Hiphop has always been a niche genre and will stay one. With the rise of the Internet it has become easier to track down Hiphop acts and support them because you are not limited to the “spotlight” anymore, so Hiphop is as healthy as it has ever been. “The spotlight” is not where a subversive genre of art belongs anyway.
