Rolling Stone has published its list of “25 Astonishing First Appearances By Famous Rappers.”
“Beyonce may have ‘woke up like this’ but her husband spent the Eighties rapping in a Hawaiian shirt,” the article says, alluding to Jay Z’s appearance in the video for “Hawaiian Sophie,” a 1989 clip from Jay Z’s mentor, Jaz. “Not every rapper can be Run-D.M.C., changing the world the first time they hit wax.”
Nonetheless, Jay Z makes Rolling Stone’s list due his appearance on High Potent’s 1986 single “H.P. Gets Busy.”
Dr. Dre appears on the list for his appearance on World Class Wreckin’ Cru’s “Surgery.”
“He produces, he raps, he runs record labels, he makes headphones – but in 1984 Dr. Dre was known for his scratching prowess,” Rolling Stone says. “He spun at the upscale club Eve After Dark in the long-running Wreckin’ Cru. Their first single, ‘Slice,’ one of the era’s many odes to DJ excellence, focused on Dre’s future N.W.A. parter DJ Yella; but the doctor got his own spotlight on the scratch-happy ‘Surgery.’”
Nas’ appearance on Main Source’s “Live At The Barbecue” earns him a spot on Rolling Stone’s list.
“When it dropped, says Nelson George, it ‘made him an instant Big Apple cult figure,’” Rolling Stone says. “MC Serch, who was moving from rapping into promotion, was trying to get him a record deal — and he imagines he wasn’t the only one. “
Rolling Stone’s “25 Astonishing First Appearances By Famous Rappers” is as follows:

Crazy how none of the new rappers are on there. “Being discovered” is a term that just doesn’t apply anymore. With how accessible internet has become with the internet and sites like Soundcloud there’s no rare gems out there. Such a different time
C’mon Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minag?? Sure they’re big know but these & couple other debuts listed were FAR from ‘astounding’ when they first dropped, they got attention & became bigger much much later. But hey since when has Rolling Stone ever been reliable when composing any type of Hip-Hop related list.
I think what they meant was surprising first appearances. Just like, whoa they were on that before they were famous. But if that was the case it’s titled terribly.
Dr. Dre – World Class Wreckin Cru Surgery (1984)
30 years in the making. hip-hops first billionaire!
Outkast’s first appearance was on TLC’s “What About Your Friends” Remix
OutKast’s first appearance was on my dick back in 1989
True
You two realize astounding and astonishing are two different words that mean different things… or no?
Dre looks like just saw a homeless person take a shit on the pavement in that photo
great observation
lmao it does too
LMAO!
Tech N9nnneeeeee
guess that means detox will officially never happen. cant imagine a billionaire having much motivation to drop a classic album lol

TECH N9NEEEE
jay-z appearance least well known of all of these. on the list because of who he is. another l for shawn
I didn’t know about the Biggie and DMX ones either
This list only says that hip hops last great first appearance was in 1993.
Yo you gotta include Big Pun with the Beatnuts “Off The Books” that’s one of the best first appearances outside of Nas.
Rolling Stone’s known for ignoring Latino rappers
Actually, Punisher’s first appearance was in ’95 on Fat Joe’s 2nd album Jealous One’s Envy, on the song “Watch Out”.
This is great. Listened to all the music listed above. I prefer Rap Zero music songs more. They Have some great songs and their Rap Is outstanding.
