It’s been a weird week for Anthony Holmes. The St. Louis sports fan accidentally discovered the joys of hockey, and then three days later he was a guest on Good Morning America.
Holmes, who goes by Tony X. or @soIoucity on Twitter, stumbled onto Game 7 of the first-round playoffs between the St. Louis Blues and the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night (April 25).
He was immediately hooked, and slightly confused.
He went viral quickly, gaining almost 65,000 new Twitter followers in four days.
His newfound popularity caught the attention of the St. Louis Blues, who invited him to see their next playoff home game, against the Dallas Stars on May 3.
And, this morning (April 28), he was a guest on Good Morning America.
“I never gave [hockey] a chance,” he explained to the hosts on the show. “I was a big football fan and baseball fan but I never hockey a chance.”
One of the most hilarious aspects of the story is Tony’s take on the largely white sport and its #hockeytwitter fan base.
Since going viral, Tony has kept live-tweeting games, further delving into the strange customs of hockey culture.
I watch hockey too & I’m also black! it’s a good sport the reason it have alot of white people in it because it was invited in Canada & it’s Canada national sport! i enjoy hockey my favorite team is the Dallas stars
I live in Canada I’mblack our national sport is laccross . You would think it’shockey though the way love it , no sweat bro just a lill schooling…… Go Flames …….
K
i discovered womens volleyball one afternoon and i was hooked, why cant i be invited to their game or get popular for no reason!
I’m black, from Canada and been a a hockey fan since birth. From Montreal and hockey has literally replaced religion here. My oldest son is 9 and plays hockey too. Of course he is one of the few. Black players are unknown but in full effect.
I don’t get why this is such a big deal. This HAS to be a PR move from the suits in the NHL front office. America is weird right now. The things that go ‘viral’ are getting dumber and dumber.
Well you do ?
the puck is way too small for me to keep up with and there’s no diversity whatsoever that’s why I call it “h*nky” but those dudes beat the hell out of each other and the refs are like “beat each other up and then it’s a two minute timeout for you buddy” makes other pro sports look like child’s play lol
“H*NKY”? REALLY Y’ALL? “H*NKY” IS OOF LIMITS HERE?! *DEAD* FOH! That’s what was preventing my post from happening? Lmfao!
