Nas Invests In Exo, A Cricket-Flour Food Company

Nas has invested in Exo, a cricket-flour food company, according to Bloomberg.

The Brooklyn, New York company says that it has finalized a $4 million series A funding round from a group of investors that includes Nas, AccelFoods and Collaborative Fund.

Exo sells its cricket-flour protein bars at Whole Foods, Wegman’s and online. It plans to introduce ready-to-eat shakes and protein powders to the market.

“We envision cricket powder being competitive with soy, and whey, and any other protein source,” Exo co-founder Greg Sewitz says to Bloomberg. “That starts with introducing cricket protein to a consumer base with no direct experience with it and a lot of preconceived ideas that were negative.”

An NPR story originally published in 2013 says that approximately 80 percent of the world’s population eats bugs. The United States, Canada and Europe are among the prominent places where bugs are not typically consumed.

Nas’ investment in Exo is the latest of the Queens, New York rapper’s commitments to non-music related ventures. In 2013, he invested in San Francisco company Proven, which makes apps to help people apply to online job postings through cell phones.  Last year, it was announced that Nas was partnering with Sweet Chick, a New York City restaurant that specializes in chicken and waffles and Southern cuisine.

In 2012, Nas was added as an advisor of the then-RapGenius, which is now Genius.

    1. why would anyone in a first world country willingly buy and eat crickets?

      1. But Troy Ave cannot read as well as you! Read the numbers on the stock market funny…. Nas will be worth billionaires in years to come. You young people don’t know crap. Pick up a book or magazine sometime in your life…. Gwizzzzz!

    2. Y’all are dumb. I work at Whole Foods and white people love this shit. It wont sell at a bodega but best believe people go into whole foods looking for shit like this all the time

    3. See, I told you Nas stans. He has no idea how to do business, and shit like this willkeep him broke. I mean, cricket flour?! Who the hell eats that shit? I’ll tell you who, NOBODY! No sales equals no money for Nas, so this is a terrible idea. Another L for Nas. I’m still laughing at that nigga that said he was close to being a billionaire.

      1. Nas will be a billionaire when this all said and done! Just keep hating on Nasir… The greatest rapper of all time!

      2. Don’t think this is a publically listed company but its carried by Whole foods. Wouldn’t surprise me, if this company is making more money than Tidal but that wouldn’t be that difficult.

      3. It is true Nukka! Check the stocks in his companies that he invested in. Oh I forgot you don’t know how to read trending market numbers.

You must worship Nas. You follow him religiously! We all know you are a Jay Z Prick Sucker. We all know you don’t want Nas to shine because he ethered Jay big fat lips! Take the lost and keep it moving… Nas is the People’s Champ you worthless Nukka….

      4. You’re a fucking dumbass. Do you know how big cricket flour is? White people are eating that shit up,like you niggas eat cheetos. Cricket flour is big business, and by the you niggas catch wave it’ll be too late.

    4. If you live in Amerikkka an eat processed foods you already eat bugs with a side of mouse parts an feces. The FDA allows a certain level of contaminates in whatever crap you people consider food these days.. Be Healthy though

    5. Remember when Hov signed this nigga to Def Jam? That was the ultimate fuck you from Jay.. “i own you, nigga”..Nas became he his bitch

      1. Yep, I remember because HOV was in charge of turning around Def Jam and Nas was one of the few artists the sold in any meaningful numbers under him. LA Reid canned HOV because he spent all his time and Def Jam trying to promote his own album and ROC crew, and the only albums that sold were Kanye. So, the moral of the story is that Nas sold units under HOV but ultimately lost his job because he couldn’t handle responsibility.

    6. They played dude like a violin for his money smh.. and you can bet the owners are white, pretty sure they are j3wish too. They are laughing all the way to the bank with Nas money.

      1. And you’re in your 40’s still visiting and trolling hiphop websites . What a pathetic waste of space you are .I genuinely feel sorry for you. Your life truly really sucks old man.

      2. Yup, You got to be like HOV and take a one time deal for Live Nation and use that j3wish money to buy/start a bunch of companies than when shit gets real bail yourself out with Beyonce’s couch cushion money. That’s why HOV keeps winning and Nas keeps losing.

      1. For what?? For inconsiderate fans like you??? Illmatic alone is enough for your soccer practice looking Inconsiderate new age hip hop fans. This man is expanding his portfolio & you are asking for an album so you can hate cuz you don’t understand how to hate on Angel Investment… Step your hate up study stock market & convert all your energy into commenting on Entrepreneur.com or FastCompany & see how far your hate takes you… Punk

    7. Yall people criticizing Nas for this investment are some dumb-asses. This is one of the best investments one could make. There is a huge base of people out there going vegan (myself, partially, at least considering part-time) that will jump all over this idea. Just keep tabs on it you dumb fucks.

      1. This stuff is made from ground-up crickets and is therefore not vegan at all. In fact, it’s not even vegetarian.

    8. Nas should retire. So many overrated rappers out there (Kendrick, Jay Z etc) and Nas is one of them. One of the most overrated of all time!
