Less than a month after Kanye West claimed he was taking a “Robin Hood approach…to making clothes,” pricing information for his upcoming Adidas Originals line has been released and none of the pieces are as affordable as that quote might suggest.
While the Yeezy Boost Low will cost around $210—cheaper than the original high-top version’s retail of $350—the rest of the line will fetch considerably more.
The minimalist sweatshirts and hoodies that Ye debuted at New York Fashion Week last month will retail for around $430, according to Hypebeast, and those Duckboots and a canvas backpack will each cost somewhere around $500.
Even more extravagant, the knitwear items on display at Ye’s show will start at $875 and cap out at $1650. By contrast, the Yeezy x Adidas Originals outerwear pieces will start at $1760 and run all the way up to $4,000.
If you let Adidas (or Kanye) tell it, the high pricing across the board is apparently a function of the whole line being manufactured in Italy from high-quality fabrics.
The Adidas Originals line is slated to be released in the Fall/ Winter season later this year.
Last month, West spoke with Style.com about his latest foray into fashion and highlighted the importance of accessibility to his approach.
“People sometimes ask, ‘Why does Kanye West pander to fashion in this way?’” he said. “I don’t pander to it, I’m trying to learn from it. Because I believe there’s some information in it that can help people have better lives. And it’s being held and blocked and not given to the people. So this is very much a Robin Hood approach that I have to making clothes.”
“Adidas is the perfect place to be,” he also said. “If someone was to say, ‘Hey, do you want to go to a high-end house now?’ I’d absolutely say no. I’m not trying to [sound] presumptuous, I’m just saying that if in my wildest dreams I was presented with the opportunity, I would absolutely say no at this point. Because I’m only concerned with making beautiful products available to as many people as possible.”
For additional Kanye West coverage, watch the following DX Daily:
” Clothing should be like food. There should never be a $5000 sweater. You know what should cost $5000? A car should be $5000.” … And a week later he releases $500 duck boots and $4000 jackets.
“I believe there’s some information in it that can help people have better lives. And it’s being held and blocked and not given to the people. So this is very much a Robin Hood approach that I have to making clothes.”… Thank god we have a modern day Robin Hood like Kanye West to charge us $500 a piece for some $50 duck boots and a $40 canvas backpack
YOU FUCKING MORONS ADIDAS CAME UP WITH THE PRICE POINT NOT KANYE. FUCKING IDIOTS
Hey Dickhead, you don’t think that Kanye had any hand in that? Dude was hyping up his brand constantly… are you really that dumb to think this is a shock to him?
“Hey Dickhead, you don’t think that Kanye had any hand in that? Dude was hyping up his brand constantly… are you really that dumb to think this is a shock to him?”…
Adidas sets the price. Kanye has no hand in that
I hate how he acts like he’s doing the world a favor by blessing us with his overpriced concentration camp inspired fashion.
DX again, with the bait articles. He doesn’t come up with the price, you dipshits. Adidas does. The line is still fucking awful looking though, and that’s coming from a fan of his.
Doesn’t matter who set the price. I don’t hear him standing up to Adidas about it. He was bitching about Nike doing this and he hops right into bed with Adidas and sells even more expensive and even trashier looking stuff. He don’t give a fuck about the people only his pockets and his wh0re wife. How the fuck is he comparing himself to Robin Hood
I don’t understand how this is bait at all (you dipshit), it dont say anywhere that Ye came up with the price
How u go on a rant abouut overpriced clothes a week before your overpriced homeless fashion line comes out with $4000 coats.
High fashion snob prices for some Adidas… Why wouldn’t we just go down and buy some Gucci or LV for the same price?
I could find a way nicer pair of boots for half the price but they wouldn’t have this assclowns name on the tag.
$500 duckboots??? Nah I will just go buy 3 pairs of Timbs.
Kanye went on those retarded rants on Breakfast Club and Sway, talking all this new slaves bs. Still continued to talk about making affordable clothes this year, but now we see that the prices are on high fashion levels and he copied other people’s designs. Dude’s a massive hypocrite.
Boost Lows are a Nike ripoff
I went to Bonnaroo last year, and Kanye got up onstage and just started bitching at the audience because I think someone had spray painted ‘Fuck Kanye’ on a porta-potty or something,” says Connelly. “Then he started yelling, ‘Where the press at? Point out the press!’ and started going crazy and yelling at everybody about how they didn’t respect his genius. Then he started naming names of people he should be compared to – George Washington, Henry Ford, etc. My wife was really enjoying it, but I wasn’t. We’re a p@ying audience showing him respect, and he launches into us with this egocentric fucking bullshit rant, and it was insane.” “And he didn’t even play Gold Digger.”
I must confess, I’m a fan of the few pieces of seen.
However, being from Seattle, I can’t help but see the grunge era making a comeback. The BIG difference is that no one back then paid big dollars for a flannel, destroyed jeans or Chucks! The clothes were really just a representation of the local scene. The clothing was essentially everyday work wear for loggers, fisherman and local tradesmen.
Perhaps I’m compelled to take interest in some of the designs I’ve seen because I’m taken back, but ultimately I don’t see the direction.
These prices don’t cater to the majority of Kanye fans and the designs aren’t likely to command much respect to the high end designers of the fashion Industry.
It seams to me that these pieces are going to end up on other celebrities with reluctant fans looking at the pictures.
With that said, ultimately it is the consumer that has the final say. Wouldn’t that be some ish, to pick up some of those duck boots and a backpack at Ross?
And he was just talking about classism… what a hypocrite
Don’t say he didn’t do the pricing. He has said in several interviews that he’s had a hand in it
Kanye West really is a bitch ass nigga.
This nigga swear ppl from the hood gonna go out and by his shit like we got money. He should be selling this shit specifically to celebrities knowing damn well we can’t afford this shit.
