damn, I like how these artists are going back to their roots, with Lupe going back to his food and liquor and cool days, linkin park going back to doing rap metal like hybris theory, lil wayne going back to his carter II flow in I am not a human being 2 (maybe, heard it from mtv that one of the reporters got to hear the album and said it sounded like that) and the original freecreditscore band may come back, now this I like

  • Foodstamp313

I love Lupe, but as a white man, I'm tired of hearing "the white man" in some damn lyrics...the same government that allows you to smash on the government in the open would get you ran over in China, or you village melee'd in Ghana...guess what you don't like liquor stores in your area, quit drinkin' liquor motha fucka...you don't like gun stores in your hood, quit buyin guns...its capitalism..I love how people bitch about the things that make this country the greatest country in the world

    • Jett

Lupe makes some good points in this song. Like any normal man not everything he says is Gospel, but at least he's trying to say something.

    • Anonymous

If you don't believe that America is the greatest country then you need to get the fuck out. People that bitch about USA but live in it leaching off the system and complain that this country sucks can go to hell. How about trying to contribute and become a productive member of society. If you just wanna live in a country and not have to contribute to it's development then either get the fuck out, or stop complaining and just collect your $1K a month (housing, food etc.) and be grateful for it. If you live in USA and don't salute the flag, then get OUT.

    • Anonymous

why dont they put liquor stores and gun shops in suburban america so we can be equal mane

    • Trent

Can y'all really disagree with his WHOLE comment? Seems he made a valid point about the guns and liquor. I mean realistically does being black force you to buy those things? Sorry I am just ignorant and can't read between the lines as you fail to articulate..

    • Anonymous

How in hell is America the greatest country in the world hahahah

    • Seb

As an African, where the hell did you get that idea about Ghana from??? Wow,ignorance at its highest level!

    • username

The 'white man' as a term is usually alluding to those who control the system those who control America, and those are white men. Obama is a puppet and is simply an illusion of power. Lupe is talking about America he's not talking about any other country. Hell America isn't the free-ist country. But Lupe is a United States Citizen and is allowed to discuss his qualms with America. How can you even say America is the greatest country in the world have you been a citizen of all other countries? You sound like a closed minded nationalist with no substantiated fact to back up your mumblings. You're ignorant of what it's like to be black in America and of it's history and how that affects it's culture. Arrogant to assume that the life you lead and the country you live in is the best. And you are privilege because you are white and will never experience this country as a >12% minority.

    • username

As a black guy I STRONGLY disagree with this post. Typical white privilege, arrogance and ignorance.

    • Anonymous

as a black dude...i strongly agree and i mean STRONGLY AGREE with this post.

I tried to listen to this song after a long break of not listening to it and still does nothing for me. Other then listening and saying he's good at flowing there is just nothing on this track that stands out to be memorable to me. I don't want him to rap about girls, cars, and money but I think he just needs to get off politics in music since it didn't work out to well for lasers and it's looking like it's going to fail again.

    • jordan

Lol this is how Lupe has always rapped. The dude raps about political and socio-economic issues. So you are basically saying Food and Liquor and The Cool were failures too.

    BORING- TROY IS A CLASSIC

  • Truth

Hip hop started out to bring awareness about issues people were facing, especially minorities. This is along the same lines, except it's what we're all facing. We're being controlled and aren't as free as we're told we are. Lupe expresses that, and I respect him for it because he could be putting out radio singles like Kick Push but instead he's speaking out with the platform he was given.

  • Esso

not a bad song, we all know Lupe can kill a track harder than this tho.. waiting for his 2nd peak... 4 stars

  • nyystateofmind

fuck lupe, fuckin cult leader. promoting and circulating negativity. doesn't matter if it is true. he is profiting by promoting negativity. poison for your mind. plenty of beautiful peaceful things on this earth to rap about. its every fuckin song with this loser. he's smart too, the way he constructs this song, you may overlook his agenda.

    • Truth

HOLD ON...you think Lupe promotes negativity? Ignorance really is bliss isn't it? He's speaking about the state of the world now. Which maybe you're too blind to see.

This beat is an all time HipHop classic and Lupe did it justice.

I think we may get the old lupe on this album.

  • The_Watcher

Woah, dude came back with a fucking vengeance.

  • jack johnson

    Can't touch the original though

  • carlos garcia

man this shit goes off... LUPE IS BACK

  • .....

And even the sample T.R.O.Y was made from, was a cover of another song. Lol, absolutely nothing wrong with sampling....

  • .....

Don't see what the issue is. Hiphop is built on sampling. T.R.O.Y isn't even the original song, even that was sampled.

  • Vartan

    CHEERS LUPE. KEEPIN IT REAL

  • fox

he's back! glad his label isnt fucking him anymore. shouldn't call this a singe tho, t.r.o.y. is too classic. if its just a mixtape cut its dope imo

  • oskamadison

After all the hoopla over this joint, I listened to it and lyrically, it's dope. I'll have to sit with it a minute to catch everything but I like joints like that. Here's the thing: he simply could have avoided all the drama by simply using another beat. "TROY" didn't fit what he was talkin' about. I think PE's "Shut "Em Down" remix (coincidentally, another Pete Rock joint) would have been perfect for the song, imo.

    • micfuna

I agree... "Shut 'Em Down" remix would have been better. But this was really good too. Lupe is back...

  • rayulove69

As always Like the lyricism but shouldn't have touched the classic sax !

  • anon

Do we as a people worry about copyright infringement now? As lupe said, freedom ain't free. What do you care if Pete Rock made this beat in the stone age? Listen to the lyrics and go hate on the things worth hating, like the content lupe's talking about for example.

  • Anonymous

    garbage. lupe needs to quit

    • GLOCKWORK

You're retarded? Were you even listening to a thing he was saying? The multi-syllable rhymes, double meanings, message...this shit is classic Lupe. You need to quit listening to rap.

  • Alki

I read about Lupe using Pete Rock's beat for a song a few days ago and i honestly couldn't see what all the ruckus was about, even though i thought Lupe could've gotten his blessing, if not his permission to use his beat (especially as i didn't even recognise the name T.R.O.Y and just thought it must be some old average song, the way IDIOTS here described it). So i come here to listen to it and as soon as the beat starts i get angry! How could he touch this! IDIOTS here talking about he made it better...seriously?? Do any of you kids know how timeless the original sounded?! This is something i wont even remember next week! The original had such a laid back flow to it like you could just leave it on repeat and it'd take your mind places and this dumb ass goes rapping all fast on the beat to make this atrocity even worse! I hear these kids swearing all the time that Lupe is the best thing in rap (i've never considered him anything more than a better version of b.o.b) but this is just wrong!

    • Ken

Dude, shut up....get off your high horse. Go listen to the original then. I love it too but this was also good....hating. Such a shame.

  • BIG MIKE

certain tracks you dont do over unless you have the original people on the track the subject matter on this track is hOT!!! lupe is a top five lyricist not all time, but currently. we all that said, there's something fake about this nigga and i cant put my finger one it yet..

  • Talksick

Love the beat...hook...flow...shit has an ol school vibe and good energy.

  • Listen

Lupe's version is more mentally healthy then original.... There is enough songs about pain and anguish... But what about the message Lupe is sending? Anyway T.R.O.Y. For the cry babies... Around my way (Freedom isn't free) For the Revolutionaries!!

    • Mack

I get your point, although I still dont think it was better than the original. I personally got bored after verse one. *note Im a purchaser of his music. I just feel his flow wasnt dynamic enough I enjoyed his message but for me to get the original out of my mind while listening he needed to use a different lane on the beat IMO.

    • Paidout

I concur! I cant even comprehend all the lyrics w/o listening to it over and over!! I like my rappers to be smarter than me and make me step my knowledge level up!

  • VicManMan

The more I listen the more I like. It's just different enough from T.R.O.Y. to stand on its on while still evoking that golden age classic hip hop vibe. I'd love to hear Lupe collab with Pete Rock on an original beat together. I hope he returns to working with sountrak again on this album

  • ETK

respect to Pete Rock for burying the hatchet. he knew what was up. big ups to that dude. now if half these basement dwelling haters could do the same, hip-hop would be on a rise

  • Tonby Simoni

Hip Hop was built with sampling. Without it Hip Hop would be no where near what it is now. So quit critiquing the music and just enjoy it. If you don't like it, simply move on to the next song.

  • noye

  • J - The Spark

Always a constant evolution. Your never left ... like you have been cheated.

  • DanielJayEss

I think its good for current artists to do things like this. Bring back legendary songs so they never die. And Lupe is the perfect choice for a beat like this. Not that the young people of today would know it's originally Pete Rock and CL's song or even who Pete and CL are, but at least we have a good artist rhyming over it.

  • Anonymous

Why would anybody use this sample after Pete and CL blessed it? Though this is Lupe, and his lyrical abilities are insane, but ANYBODY simply could hum over this track and it would still be a banga! Still 5 stars though-lol

  • Anonymous

Lupe is that dude, but I was expecting something more original. This does nothing for me. Would've been way more fitting on FOTP.

  • JoeA

How is this anti capitalist??? He is just stating how money is the root of all evil, and if you knew who was actually running things in the world then you'd realize the moneymakers(literal makers of money cuz I know sum a y'all will say "I'm ballin I make big bucks" when I'm talking about creating money) are evil people bankrupting the world by design

  • JoeA

The people hating on this have no clue where he's coming from...get in tuned on what's going on in the world and you'll respect lupe for his message if nothin else

  • wow

life is good, cruel summer, food and liquor2...............hip hop is back

  • Rekots

Pete Rock needs to stop actin like a bitch. All u other haters behaving like broads . He shouldn't have touched that beat , who gives a fuck . Mu fuckas actin like they helped make the beat and r offended .

  • VicManMan

I'm a huge Lupe fan since Revenge of the Nerd, and TROY is probably in my top 5 hip hop songs of all time (thanks to NBA Street vol 2...I'm young) so I kind of feel like he should have just left it alone or kept it as a mixtape track. It'll probably just be a itunes bonus track if it ends up on F&L2 anyway. I do wish he'd give the whole anti capitalism theme a break. I'm not saying stop, that's cool that he's got a message, but I don't want him to be one note like Immortal Tech is either. If he really wants to spread his message, imo, he should stick to delivering it in creative way like he did pre lasers, otherwise he's only going to get people who already agree with his message. That doesn't mean dumb it down. Thats what made F&L and The Cool classic. you could be totally against his message but still appreciate the artist way in which it's delivered. Lately he just seems to straight forwardly preachy....and seriously, dude needs a hair cut. It's embarrassing.

    • yes

I agree. Lupe needs to stop with the anti-American sentiments...I understand raising awareness, but he is so vehement about it. If you are that unhappy hear, move mu fucka

    • Daniel Goldfinger

Dude you couldn't have put it better. I too discovered this one of a kind hip hop classic through NBA Street as well as many other classic hip hop tracks that were the base of much of my hip hop favorites. I also agree completely about Lupe. He didn't do bad on the track, but this needs to be an untouched track. Good lookin brotha

  • yo what up

    dope dope dope

  • AvengerXL

lyrically sound but the use of this beat was not necessary. T.R.O.Y is a true classic and this makes a solid pseudo revolution song by Lupe douchebago sound like a mixtape track rather than a album track. Get your on beat or flip the damn sample you bums

  • C-los

Its getting annoying how angry he is at everything. Like shit really is 1 sided. SMH

  • jr_rider23

The more i listen to this song the more I think this guy is full of shit. First of all he is clearly all about material items, always dressing good, interested in electronics, and is motivated by record sales, and gets all butt hurt about people downloading. Then he turns around and raps about hating on capitalism, and talks this one love junk. I think that if you listen to this and believe in everything he says you are just a cause troll. What's worse system that makes money of of people or the guy making off of people blaming the system?

    • ACEDAWON

I don't have a problem with any of that stuff. I just don't find him too sincere that he doesn't practice what he preaches. Personally I just wished he embraced capitalism and started rapping about more interesting subjects because anti capitalism is just the death of musicians.

    • Monkey D. Luffy

What rapper or MC in this day isnt concerned with record sales? He likes electronics so he isnt down with the cause? He likes to dress fly so he isnt down with the cause? Man he could be out here like a lot of these other rap cats acting really foolish.

    • Anonymous

As much as I loved Lupe's work pre-Laser, I completely agree. He's completely full of it. Just the irony of him desperately trying to get "Freedom isn't Free" to the top of the iTunes chart, pissed me off the most. So much for anti-capitalist...

  • Anonymous

well, it sounds good. I guess that's what counts. If you're incapable of creating some new music might as well recycle a classic.

He definitely got food and liquor bars on this track. I'm going to be first in line to get Food and Liquor 2

the foundation for a sick track is a good production. dunno about the rest of you but i cant engage myself in the lyrical content if the beat aint on point. hopefully the rest of 'Food & Liquor 2' is of 'Food and Liquor' and 'The cool' ESQ.

  • Stop Reminiscing

Unlike history rap artist shouldn't have to always look back or pay homage to those who came before all the damn time. From one old head to the others, collect your check for the sample and stfu!

  • Anonymous

This is the Lupe we want. Leave those gay ass Europe house beats and synth shit alone.

  • Stan

don't get caught up with the beat; this song is not about the beat, its about the words. lupe killed this. 5/5

    • Anonymous

agreed/. niggas are stupid tho, fake ass i smoke weed all day im getting money clown ass niggas

    • lol

it's always about the lyrics, but part of being an mc is your beat selection. this producer butchered this beat if you compare it to troy. Great lyrice but Poor beat selection makes this an average track

  • adsf

i wish lupe gave a shout out to pete rock but whatever. i hope this gets lots of airplay so this type of hip hop gets more of the spotlight

  • Roseland Ballroom

The detractors can say what they want however lyrical content wise Lupe is saying what NEEDS to be said PERIOD

  • Keenan Cunnin

blame it on the producers???! Dude should have got far away from this joint the moment he heard it, period. Someone brings you a remade version of T.R.O.Y. to rap on, you refuse. Wack dude would have been better off claiming he hadn't heard T.R.O.Y. before, ha!

  • Keenan Cunnin

I lost alot of respect for Lupe Fiasco when he said he never heard "Midnight Marauders." Then I thought he was just plain wack for lifting modest mouse' chorus from "float on." Now, it's official...this dude really has a fucking problem...wack dude

    • Anonymous

He has classic albums...he has many people who can defend him on that...Don't call him wack because he is creative...How does hearing Midnight Marauaders make your spot in hip hop solidified? lol stfu now you ain't making it anywhere besides hatin on a future legend

    • Lupe Fan

What people don't realize is that Lupe hated everything about the whole Lasers album. He even said that The Show Goes On was his least favorite song on there. The whole album is what Atlantic Records told him to do. Not what he wanted to do. Stop hatin on a dude just because he isn't "gangsta" and he listens to different shit than most of you dick riders.

    • Anonymous

really tho?....... what hiphop head has never heard midnight marauders? that is just sad......

    • Firm Fiasco

So because he didn't listen to midnight marauders and listens to indie you lost respect for him your conviction is weak.Just leave your argument is stupid

  • TomScott

Someone tell Pete Rock to "Reminisce" "Today"....http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=h8kzLzNHkRw#!

  • real hiphoph head

The title should say produced by PETE ROCK. they completely lifted and reused this beat. WOW! thats truly sad.. Thou shalt not bite!! Its one of the commandments of hiphop..... sadly, you youngins just dont get it....

    • Hip Hop Fan

Shows how much you know about Hip Hop but its based on sampling. Even old school artists use to sample all the time. SMH

  • JoeA

How is he hating on white people, I'm white and I'm a huge lupe fan....that FEMA camp line was ill that's why y'all are hating....research FEMA or don't...go back to sleep nothing to see here

  • JoeA

That shit is sick!!!! This is that kinda shit people need to hear, America and the world is f***ed up and we need to change stuff....5/5 dope throw back beat and dope lyrics

  • Geezy

this sucks ass...TROY is 10x better

  • Aftah

WOW Lyrically this is the best song this yr

  • Nas

YO I Respect this nigga..NO other nigga can compare this nigga's lyrically..

  • Shocked

honestly even if pete rock gave this song his blessing, the beat just sounds so corny. i hope this is just a buzz single and is at least changed for the album

  • lol

Remember all the controversy before the first food and liquor? How most of his shit was leaked? Now this... I think Lupe is a genius and knew what he was doing when he dropped this. LUPE FIASCO THE G.O.A.T. LISTEN!

  • jr_rider23

Lupe is great on the mic but I just don't agree with everything he says. I can't speak for everyone because I'm sure there's a lot of people that agree with a lot of lupe's views but I just wish he would stop rhyming about being a victim in all these different circumstances.

    • 490717

Lupe just speak the truth, don't blame him cuz you'd rather be duped. You don't have to agree but if you listen past the beat you see it's something he has to be regardless of who is displeased.

  • Code Beats

Same beat as pete rocks but lupe still ripped it. don't hate on lupe hate on the producers jackin the legend.

  • Anonymous

THEIF! THEN HE HAD THE NERVE 2 PUT ANOTHER PRODUCERS NAME ON THE SHIT! I HOPE SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS 2 THIS CLOWN

  • Real Talk

Let me ask all y'all niggas a question, did you just hear the beat? and decided to hate? or did you actually listen to the lyrics? and didn't like the lyrics? I could understand if Lupe was saying swAG THIS, and Rack on racks, or talking about how got money and spends it on strippers, but this nigga is rapping with substance, just curious, I think Pete Rocks people is on this comment site, cuz you can tell how salty some of these comments are. Beside PEte sampled this song, so how can he be mad that someone else sampled it?

    • Real Talk

Did you not see that he had the blessings from the owner of the samples? how is that stealing, this could not have been on his album if he didn't get clearance. Pete Rock does not own the original composition therefore, he cannot hold some one back from sampling the song.

    • Anonymous

you're missing the point. it's the fact that the beat was used without his approval. I'm sure if they approached him about using it he would have reacted differently. maybe still not allow it but he wouldn't have ranted on twitter about it. bottom line, stealing someones shit is fucked up.

    • Anonymous

      >Real Talk half people on this site are faggots who have no life

    • Real Talk

I did read it and commented on the article to, but did you read my post? why are you guys hating on this track? what sentimental values does this have to do with you? once again did you guys hear the lyrics? or did you just hop on the Pete Bandwagon, and felt the need to turn on Lupe? CUz i rather listened to him then, some Dance Track or a track about how much Coke he's selling, just saying, you guys all bash Drake, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Wakka, but yet when a rapper who is actually rapping about, something worth mentioning, you guys slander him? Guarantee if Pete had came out and said I love this track, you guys would be singing a different tune, right now. Pete should never be allowed clearance to sample another song in his life, so he can eat his own words, about how "no folks, can make original music these days"

    • ReadingIsFundamental

If you read the other article on this site about this song you will understand what it means to Pete and why he is upset.

  • LupeDontLikeWhitePeople

All this mothertrucker does is divide. My username says it all.

    • Me

@WhitePeopleDontUnderstand...Thats some deep shit right there. I feel you on that. I'm a big sports fan and I see it all the time. Black players are treated sooooooooo different then whites in sports media. A NBA fight breaks out the media talks about what's wrong with these thugs and rap music and blah blah blah. When NHL and MLB fights break out you don't get any of that. No ones attacking rock music or calling these players thugs. Shoot in hockey there "enforcers" are called goons but there's not any negative connotation associated with it, its apart of the game and celebrated. And don't give him me the crap that fighting is legal in hockey, just cause it's legal doesn't make it right or anymore moral.

    • STAN

Nothing Lupe says is about splitting races. The only dividing comes from you understanding only half his words. Racism is a pawn to trap all. How many Black Africans getting rich by selling out their people working with White Americans. How many Arabs getting sold out by their own people? Yes, there still is a vast amount of racist white people in America, but that is just how some people are. Shit, people hate others cause they don't like their football team. Does nobody learn from Malcolm and how his perception changed at the end of his life? If you draw everything down to color, you already lost.

    • Real Talk

can you blame him? Just cuz theres no whips or chains, and the white mans not wearing the white hoodie in public no more, don't mean that racism is not alive. And the white man did fuck up this country, Nigga have you watched the movie Avatar?(may sound corny, but just peep) That is exactly what the White man did to the indians, indians weren't bothering no body, living in peace and harmony, what the white man do, fucking killed most of them and captured the rest, whats next on the agenda, lets get Humans from africa to do all the labor work, while we kick back with are feet up. Remember black people didn't make black people hate white americans, White people made black people hate white america. Don't believe racism is alive, what happened with the traveon Martin case, why did it take a march from all the african americans to just get a case going. Because they had already freed Zimmerman for self defense. So white boy at the top from the original comment, just enjoy the music, and understand any hate towards your skin color is not your fault, but your forefathers fault, for slaving the African Race

    • LupeDontLikeWhitePeople

Un-proper is un-proper, regardless of color. I see it from both sides. As a white man if I start screaming about black people acting unproper or not comforming, I will be seen as a racist. Lupe does it and now he is the "Worlds Greatest Lyricist".

    • WhitePeopleDontUnderstand

Hate to tell u but whites and blacks r still diverse. A black man must act much more proper than a white man to gain the same public acceptance.

  • saintyvisu

lol i dont kno why people are always picking sides. its ok to like pete rocks version and lupes version. Look at nas illmatic and elzhi ellmatic. both dope albums

  • saintyvisu

great track. i wish he could rap on an original beat.however lyrics always on point. "Hither you can be mr burns or mr smithers the tyrant or the slave but nowhere in the middle." seriously, not to many rappers of lupes caliber.

  • Anonymous

Lupe is BY FAR the greatest lyricist of all time. Not even Nas or Jigga can rival his abilities.

  • Anonymous

Pete rock made the riff famous. but its not his to begin with. He sampled it from Tom Scott just as lupe is now.

  • Anonymous

there is no classic hiphop radio and there are hardly any old school cd's for sale anywhere, how can u expect kids today to know about the old school classics? a lot of shit is out of print too. i mean its gonna be hard for kids to come across shit randomly on itunes like 3rd bass or edo g and da bulldogs...lupe reusing this beat will probably get a lot of younger hiphop listeners to find out about the original and from there maybe delve into the old school shit from '88 to '98. think about the positives too.

  • obione

LUPE IS BACK SO IS HIS HOT NEW SINGLE KILLA http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=GM5KtnYbuZU

  • Go back to class

I thought it was dope. Heavy old school Hip Hop head right here too and it's cool to me. The whole bitter Pete Rock situation, I guess Lupe should have gave him a heads up about it yeah. People sample all the time though, what's the big deal. I know when I hear samples, I like to research the original song which expands the original singer. So now these youngin's who hear this track will go back to TROY and appreciate OG Hip Hop.

  • Anonymous

the third verse to this track is too unreal for anyone to be bitching right now. from someone that likes half of lasers, think of it this way: around my way > show goes on

  • Anonymous

damn. this shit iz trash no originalty in hip hop anymore.there are lot of records to samplw why spoil troy

wow i just cant believe all this hateful comments whats disrespectful about sampling a classic ?? lupe 5/5 one of the best rap tunes of 2012 so far ! so glad that lupe is back on it again! Slaughterhouse/Black Hippy/Lupe Fiasco/Nas this year could not get any better

  • Z

Get off Lupe's dick. Fucking haters #FNL2 Fuck your favorite rapper Lupe rules

  • jc

this is a bunch of nonsense in my ear. the beat is shitty and disrespectful. Id respect it more if he rhymed over T.R.O.Y instrumental..

  • LISTEN UP

more narrow minded ignorant racist content from Lupe, no big surprise there to be honest constantly talking "the white man" this and "the white man" that, when any actual intellect knows their is no such thing as the "white" man or the "black" man in this world there is only the "rich" man the "poor" man and those inbetween and ALL of those groups have people of every single skin colour and not one suffers more than the others, only those with tiny perceptions who cant see beyond the colour of their own skin believe otherwise

    • White Kid

You clearly dont follow Lupe then. He's not racist at all. I just saw his performance in March in Dayton and he gave a great speech about white-black unity against oppression by those who hate.

    • Anonymous

      Word. Fuck this racist bitch.

  • Anonymous

hell nah ma dude i finna play some wocka flocka now, nahmnean? lol but really this is grade-a lyricism and social awareness...only those who expect this from Hip Hop can truly appreciate it, along with those who use the internet knowledge.......upload complete niggas

  • Mike B

Im sorry, Lupe needs to stay away from that track. it would be one thing if he "killed it" but he didnt. i guess everyone has certain expectations when you spit on a classic track, and he definetly failed to meet mine for this jont. lupe go home lol

  • Lu's Back

The only reason that im givin this 5 stars is because Lupe was sayin real shit on this song. He should've confirmed it wit Pete Rock tho.

    that pete rock sample though

  • hey yo

this is the Lupe I know. He doesn't care if he goes over niggas heads unlike Jay and Nas. This is what he knows. Lyrics that make me want to decipher. yeah this is definitely F&L2.

  • TROLLING

MORE LUPE RELIGIOUS BULLSHIT... HOW MANY TRACKS CAN A NIGGA MAKE TO BIG UP MUSLIMS BORING

  • Lupe

Blowing out your birthday candles just to make a death wish.

  • ETK

okay, I listened to both beats, and I noticed something: LUPE ALREADY FREESTYLED OVER THIS BEAT. YEARS AGO. It was an unreleased track with Wale and Kardinal Offishall, some Dopeboy shit. that probably means he got the OK from Tom Scott then, if not then probably recently as well. either way that's somethin Pete Rock coulda looked into, y'all producers oughta reach out to rappers in the future instead of clicking on yer fuckin twitter homepage seconds after the song dropped #realtruth

LUPE BACK NEGROES!! LETS HOPE HIS LABEL LEAVES IT ALONE!!!

  • Catalyst

Non-Commercial.. Starit to the point.. Epic Record, & a real strong Comeback.. but the sample thing is confusin, so when the song's good, why the problem.. so cincerely & with all due respect, Pete Rock, Shurrup & enjoy the song...

"...Of the extremes of Americas dream/ Freud fighting Neo, Freddy Krueger refereeing" Does anyone get the complexity of that statement?!? Good Lord!

  • Jaundicdd

please...its dope. Pete Rock just wants to be heard and to remind everyone he made this ill shit. BTW I hope this isnt the untouchable track Lupe spoke of.

  • Anonymous

Pete Rock has turned into a grumpy old man, he has no right to throw a temper tantrum because Lupe used the same sample he did, if he never wanted anything to sound like "T.R.O.Y" then he should've made an original beat for it, you cant complain when somebody flips a record you happened to flip nearly 20 years ago, you dont own the record, nobody does except the guy who made the original. It feels awkward even saying this to a 41 year old man, but Pete needs to grow up This song is dope in its own right, lyrically he killed this

  • Shut Up

Had Pete Rock not complained about this none of you would being saying shit about how disrespectful this is or talking all that shit. You clowns must get lost when there's no big headline to follow.

  • njd

  • Anonymous

He made a bad move remaking TROY without Rock's permission but it's nice to hear Lupe making Hip Hop again, his verses are good, not as good as his F&L shit but nonetheless miles ahead of the stuff on Lasers.

  • LUPE IS A CLOWN JUST LIKE HIS FANS

lupe fiasco is a biting ass faggot for this, hows he gonna shit on Pete by doing disrespectful shit this. TROY wasn't for the radio and bitch ass niggas. that record was real personal.

    • what

this isn't for the radio either + you don't know the meaning of the word "biting" this is far from biting. And Lupe didn't change the meaning of the original song, you act like it's been devalued which it hasn't

  • Anonymous

but the lyrics tho!!!!! god dam...I havn't seen anyone spit metaphors this deep at will...ANYONE...this dude is ridiculous..You know your doing something right when everyone agrees your good but just want to hate on you for that same reason. • Nanda dee

Where do I start? Lupe Fiasco once again killed 'em in another single. A little taste before the big bang. From the words to the logo on the album cover. EXCELLENT!

  • Jose

This is just the same sample as T.R.O.Y but it ain't the beat itself, so stop bitching about it. Plus, this beat is dope and at least he kills it. This is like the old Lupe, where he can express himself, unlike the restrictions he had on Lasers. If Lupe goes back to this on his album, then it'll definitely be up there as top albums of 2012. This was dope, 5 stars.

    • Anonymous

Aside from the snares thrown on this version, it's exactly the same, either way the decent thing to do would have been to contact Rock.

  • Jay

I mean Lupe goes off as usual....but rehashing this beat is equivalent to rehashing Juicy....i already heard the fuckin beats a MILLION times lol

  • Born in 86

On the real , this is some wack shit. Nice try Lupe, but i'll listen to the real T.R.O.Y on any given day !

  • Sidetrack'd

Nice to hear that Lupe is back on it again. And if you put this and T.R.O.Y. side by side, you'll hear some differences, so I wouldn't say that Lupe ripped off Pete Rock. It's more like the producers on this track took the same sample used in T.R.O.Y., used a similar arrangement to pay homage, and changed some elements to keep it fairly original. And I don't hear too many people complaining about damn near every rap artist sampling "Nautilus."

    • Anonymous

yeah true but he was just complaining about the label not letting him express himself artistically, I think its kind of Ironic

  • Anonymous

Uh, this is not refreshing. Look up T.R.O.Y by CL Smooth and Pete Rock, the lyrics are on point but come on Lupe

O god, calm down people. I'm from the golden age of hiphop,, and if you want that Platinum age to ever come around the proper way, sometimez u got to bring back the classics wit 'a fresh spin. • Music Buz Knowledge

To make a derivative work (Lupe) of an original composition (Troy or more accurately, who TROY actually sampled), the artist MUST get PERMISSION from the COPYRIGHT OWNER (unless they are not selling it, ergo a mixtape). GET SOME.

I agree with everyone else. I see PR's POV but, this shit is fire.

If it doesn't spew truth and life I can't wholeheartedly endorse it. Also, Lupe is the best rapper ever.

Great song, great sample. Hopefully a great album coming soon.

I see Pete Rock's point of view... but I don't think he sees the complete picture. Lupe's sampling of T.R.O.Y. shouldn't be seen as disrespect, but a homage to what Pete's love and emotions for his brothers created: GREATNESS. Him losing his "brothers" like that birthed one of the best songs period. Anything that samples him is not only a homage to him, but an homage to Trouble T-Roy. ~ The U.R.G.
