Chicago’s backpacking Ivy leaguers are back, but this time the backpacks may have been replaced with Louis Vuitton luggage as it seems that the mindset of Naledge and Double-O has been altered and their music slightly perverted by the sonic corruptions that plague Hip Hop today. The Chi town duo, Kidz In the Hall, rolls out its new album, Land of Make Believe, a 15-track effort that captures what is arguably a devolution of the Kidz in the Hall.

The album opens with a synth heavy, drum driven intro that finds Naledge giving everyone a little bit of insight into who he is and how he thinks. Meanwhile Double-O offers a unique soundscape over which Naledge delivers with a sense of extreme confidence that isn’t lost as the album progresses. At the end of the intro Naledge tells everyone what he really thinks: “Best in Chicago, that ain’t worth debatin’, nigga I’m best in the nation”.

The braggadocio remains for the first portion of the album which finds Naledge in a territory where he hasn’t spent too much time before. He uses the first half of Land to focus on treating his ego a little and flaunting some of the finer things in life that the duo enjoy now. While Naledge occupies himself with letting everyone know that a bottle of champagne is mouthwash for him and that he’s been enjoying watching the hometown Bulls from courtside, Double-O stays busy with the production work, seemingly fighting to show that the core of the Kidz hasn’t been completely lost. While tracks like “Traffic” , “Flickin,” “Out To Lunch” , and “Bougie Girls” aren’t void of entertainment value, they are missing what can only be described as the Naledge we have come to know from School Was My Hustle and The In Crowd. What is different about this Naledge is the diminished creativity and heavy dose of swagger which ultimately even alters the very fundamentals of his delivery for the worse.

As the album progresses, some of the clouds that have set on Naledge’s lyrical abilities seem to clear and more of what we have come to expect from Kidz is evident. Although the Marsha Ambrosius hook is far from the best that could have been done for “Will II Win,” Double-O offers a solid piano chord/drum driven sonic canvas which helps drive the track, marking somewhat of a turning point on this album. Feel-good, you-can-do-anything “Take Over the World,” may be plagued with another less-than-stellar hook but does its part in continuing the album’s second-half attempt at redemption which seems at full force with tracks such as “Running” and “Do It All Again”.

It’s not to say that Land of Make Believe is a bad album, but just that it doesn’t reach the level of creativity and lyrical display that has become characteristic of Kidz in the Hall, capturing a step backwards in their musical sense. As overconfidence throws Naledge off his A game, Double-O is the one who brings the most fight with his mostly sample-free efforts. Naledge fails to capture the energy of the solid production and use it to flex the lyrical muscle of his which we have seen before. Evolving is never easy and we can only hope that the next Kidz in the Hall effort lets us write off Land of Make Believe as a small misstep in their Hip Hop journey.

reviewer hated actually a very creative album, better than most stuff this year besides Freeway & Jake one, Murs & 9th Wonder & Meth/Ghost/Rae. this is either 3 1/2 or a 4 had to rate it 5 to even things out. My only problem with this album is Double, he stopped sampling & that was the strength of their slept on last album that I love. My this Album is fresh to death.

see this is the problem critics are kinda spoiled like this was a decient album but compared to other albums that came out prior to this was wack like ludas new one wasnt good at all and this was deffinatly a step up i kinda see were your gettin at where they were kinda comercial but i think this was an evenly balenced beetween comercial and lyrical which isnt nessicarily a bad thing this album did lack the creativity that the kidz in the hall shown me before but i think this album shows the talent of double o alot like the spotlight was on him on this one cause all the beats on here were bangers and different. naledge was a little less lyrical on this one but this was still a good album to get in my oppinion..P.S. take over the world is my shit!!!!

BY THE WAY, THIS IS MY COMMENT FROM YESTERDAY..... Yo...SPREAD THE WORD; KIDZ IN THE HALL ALBUM SUPER, SUPER, SUPERFUCKIN WACK!!! NALEDGE MAKES ME WANNA PULL MY HAIR OUT!! THESE DUDES ALMOST REMIND OF KANYE WEST KNOCKOFFS. THEY'RE TRYING TO GO TOO COMMERICAL SOUNDING, THEY'RE BASICALLY SELLING OUT, BUT THEY'RE SELLING OUT FOR NO REASON BECUZ THEY AIN'T SELLIN ANY RECORDS!!! SO THAT MAKES EM LOOK EVEN WORSE, HAHA!! LISTEN TO THEIR SINGLE, AND TELL ME NALEDGE DOESN'T SOUND LIKE KANYE?? SHIT IS ALMOST LAUGHABLE, IT'S SO OBVIOUS....LIKE, IM ALSO THINKING "HOW COULD NALEDGE EVEN BE OKAY WITH HIMSELF SOUNDING IDENTICAL TO KANYE?" THESE DUDES AIN'T EVEN HIP HOP ANYMORE, THEY'RE WACK!!

  • BALLS

THANK YOU DX, I AGREE TOTALLY. THIS ALBUM IS FUCKIN HORRIBLE. ALTHOUGH, "OUT TO LUNCH" AND "FRESH ACADEMY" ARE DECENT. BUT DOUBLE-O RUINS THESE BEATS WITH STUPID ASS SOUNDIN SYNTH SOUNDS AND SHIT....LIKE, AT FIRST, I WAS REALLY FEELIN "FRESH ACADEMY" BUT THEN WHEN THOSE OTHER SOUNDS CAME IN, I WAS COMPLETELY TURNED OFF. I THINK IT'S HILARIOUS THAT DX MENTIONED NOTHING WHATSOEVER ABOUT NALEDGE PRETTY MUCH BEING KANYE WEST IN THEIR SINGLE, "JUKEBOX." I MEAN COME ON DOG, YOU SOUND EXACTLY LIKE KANYE, YOU DUMB SHIT!! AND YOU'RE FROM CHICAGO!! THAT'S JUST TOO OBVIOUS, NIGGA!! I NEVER LIKED NALEDGE, ALWAYS THOUGHT HE SOUNDED LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, AND NEVER WAS ANYTHING SPECIAL. THESE DUDES SUCK DICK!

First off good music at www.MYSPACE.COM/VTSTAUS........Give me feedback My own little review.... i would really give this album a 3.5 but that option is not availble but its better than a 3 so it gets a four. as far as bein on ht esame level it does not compare with the in crowd that album was a sleeper classic and i still gets heavy rotation in my cd player. but none the less still a good effort by the kidz tryin to stay up to date with this swagger image they have painted for themselves. Intro 3/5: not the best intro starts off slow nothin like how blackout kicked off the last album really expermental beat that just doesnt cut it Traffic 4/5: Bangin beat that naledge drops some hot versus on talkin about streets of the chi nice track overall Flickin 5/5: one of the favorite tracks hot beat hot hook hot flow hot lyrics songs captures perfectly what the new kidz in the hall were trying to do with this cd but failed on other tracks Out to lunch 5/5: Best song on the cd without a doubt this songs reminds me of a tribe beat updated to 2010. unreal banger by double 0 hear that naledge just slides and graces it nicely while the kid daytona beats this track and i look foward to hearin much more from this guy Bougie Girls 3/5: i dont know what it is about this song but it feels played out the beats songs like something you would hear in a 70's porno and its just been done waay to many times and lyrics are corny who the fuck names there song bougie girls Jukebox4/5: Lead single off the album nice beat by double 0 decent lyrics with a smooth flow. tries to be a radio hit record and sounds a lot better than half the shit that has more sucess than this on the radio all in all hot beat and good club song doesnt try to be anything more mad funny video too L_O_V_E 3/5: once agian whats up with the classic porno music guys decent song Will 2 Win 4/5: good kidz in the hall right here marsha sounds great on the hook and naledges smooth voice sounds reall good over a slept on smooht beat by double 0 Take over the world4/5: Banger hook is a little gay htat colin monroe dude should leave hip hop alone and go do some emo shit but the beat is fuckin nice and its good to see just blaze is doin ohter shit besides eatin snakcs and hostin madden tourneys although that jay electronica beats was fire but anyways i like this song and naledge is on his anthem shit here Fresh Academy5/5: Speaking of anthems this songs screams swagga and in my opionion is the hottest im fresh anthem since swagga like us that cost half the budget to make no huge names here but everyone spits it like there job depends on it Simple Life2/5: all i gott say is gayness at its finest Running 3/5 the beat is real uptempo gotta a twist of rock in it but the hook sounds like fuckin david bowie is on it not feelin it that much but versus are okay Do It all Again 3/5 : mediocre songs with mediorce beat and okay lyrics the reprise version kicks its ass I AM reprise 5/5: another great song beat is awesome remids me of the nba piano anthem on all the impossible commercials they have then when the heavy bass drops fuckin rocked my car. One of naledges best versus that truley has him spittin like he used to like on songs the pledge and my inner me really heartfelt and great songs that reminds me of the kidz in the hall i used to love my only issues is the length is way too short for such a classic track suprised hip hop dx didnty mention this one. Rise and Shine 4/5: good way to close the album feelin the song hook was done wll with the beat like naledges lyrics talkin about when he was younf to know and had his trademark swagger on it good closer. All in all i like the album its a nice take from the duo which is kind of sad considering how good their old stuff was but at least its a good atempt would good of got something like 808 and heartbreaks from the duo soo thank good for that. my problem with DX is there always hatin you guys need to chill naledge has always been a cocky motha fucka i thought you guys would know this by now stop givin gucci man higher reviews than albums like this way better of a transition than other rappers have grown into like lil wayne cough cough and kanye get used to it boys its hip hop is changin and artist like this are tryin to keep up with the times and for what it is kidz in the hall got a passing grade on this one If you wanna hear some ill hip hop go to my page www.myspace.com/vtstatus and let me know what you guys think
