Kirk Franklin was mentioned by Katt Williams in his now-infamous Club Shay Shay interview, and now Kirk has shared his thoughts on the name-drop.

In the explosive interview released last month, Katt kicked off the conversation by saying, “This is about to be the opposite of Kirk Franklin praying,” referencing Kirk’s prior interview on the platform.

HipHopDX‘s Jeremy Hecht caught up with the singer on the red carpet at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 4), and asked him about his initial reaction to Katt’s joke.

“You just shake your head. It’s like, ‘Lord, have mercy!’ because I don’t know where it’s going,” he laughed. “But shout out to Katt Williams. I just think that there are so many voices right now that are having the opportunity to speak their journey, their experiences.”

He continued: “And I just think that it’s important for everyone to have a platform to tell the truth and their story. I don’t think anybody should be silenced, anybody should be censored. I think that every human being has the right to tell their voice and their story.”

Released on January 4, Katt Williams’ appearance on Club Shay Shay set the internet ablaze with his unfiltered comments about everyone from Diddy to Trick Daddy to Ludacris to Ice Cube and beyond.

When asked about the pay disparity other actors have complained about while working on the Friday franchise, Katt came to Cube’s defense, noting that he was a Black man trying to make movies without a big budget, and people shouldn’t have expected a huge pay day.

Taking to Twitter/X with a nearly 10 minute video the following day, Ice Cube addressed the Club Shay Shay interview and confirmed most of what Katt said was true; although Cube did want to clear up a couple of “discrepancies.”

In short, he said that the role of Money Mike was already written but Katt added his flair to it; he confirmed that Rickey Smiley did try out for the role first but they later gave it to Katt after his audition – and he denied that there was ever a rape scene in the film.

Cube went on to explain that the role of Money Mike was written as a much smaller part, but Katt’s ad-libs and freestyled lines enhanced it so much that they kept adding more of him to the script.

But as far as the alleged rape scene, Cube said that was never a thing.
